Effect Of Amino Acids On Inhibition Of Lactate Dehydrogenase-X By Gossypol, M H. Javed, M A. Khan Mar 1999

Effect Of Amino Acids On Inhibition Of Lactate Dehydrogenase-X By Gossypol, M H. Javed, M A. Khan

Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences

Gossypol acetic acid (GAA) has been shown to have male antifertility effects, but there are pronounced differences among animal species. In the search of endogenous effector molecules, which interfere with the functions of GAA, we have studied the in vitro effect of various amino acids on the inhibition of the purified LDH-X by GAA. Histidine, cysteine and glycine were shown to block the effect of GAA. The effects of these amino acids were concentration dependent. Histidine and glycine protection was found to be complex type in which both the Km and Vmax were decreased compared to control. Arginine, glutamic acid, …

Genotypic Expression At Different Ages: Ii. Wool Traits Of Sheep, H. Okut, C. M. Bromley, L. Dale Van Vleck, G. D. Snowder

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Genetic parameters for wool traits for Columbia, Polypay, Rambouillet, and Targhee breeds of sheep were estimated with single- and multiple-trait analyses using REML with animal models. Traits considered were fleece grade, fleece weight, and staple length. Total number of observations ranged from 11,673 to 34,746 for fleece grade and fleece weight and from 3,500 to 11,641 for staple length for the four breeds. For single-trait analyses, data were divided by age of ewe: young ages (age of 1 yr), middle ages (ages of 2 and 3 yr), and older ages (age greater than 3 yr). Heritability estimates averaged over breeds …

Genotypic Expression At Different Ages: I. Prolificacy Traits Of Sheep, H. Okut, C. M. Bromley, L. Dale Van Vleck, G. D. Snowder

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Genetic parameters for prolificacy traits for Columbia (COLU), Polypay (POLY), Rambouillet (RAMB), and Targhee (TARG) breeds of sheep were estimated with REML using animal models. Traits were number of live births (LAB), litter size at birth (LSB) and weaning (LSW), and litter weight weaned (LWW). Numbers of observations ranged from 5,140 to 7,095 for prolificacy traits and from 5,101 to 8,973 for litter weight weaned for the four breeds. For single-trait analyses, ewes were classified as young (1 yr old), middle-aged (2 and 3 yr old), or older (> 3 yr old). After single-trait analyses, three-trait analyses were done for …

Genotypic Expression With Different Ages Of Dams: Iii. Weight Traits Of Sheep, H. Okut, C. M. Bromley, L. Dale Van Vleck, G. D. Snowder Mar 1999

Genotypic Expression With Different Ages Of Dams: Iii. Weight Traits Of Sheep, H. Okut, C. M. Bromley, L. Dale Van Vleck, G. D. Snowder

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Correlations between genetic expression in lambs when dams were young (1 yr), middle-aged (2 and 3 yr), or older (older than 3 yr) were estimated with three-trait analyses for weight traits. Weights at birth ( BWT) and weaning ( WWT) and ADG from birth to weaning were used. Numbers of observations were 7,731, 9,518, 9,512, and 9,201 for Columbia ( COLU) , Polypay ( POLY) , Rambouillet ( RAMB) , and Targhee ( TARG) breeds of sheep, respectively. When averaged, relative estimates for WWT and ADG were similar across breeds. Estimates were variable across breeds. On average, direct heritability was …

Candidate Repellents, Oral And Dermal Toxicants, And Fumigants For Brown Treesnake Control, Peter J. Savarie, Richard L. Bruggers

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

The information presented in this chapter was obtained primarily from two computerized literature searches conducted on the Dialog System (Dialog Information Services, Inc.; Palo Alto, Calif.), which covers a wide variety of topics including medicine, environmental sciences, agriculture, and biology. The key word in the first search was the scientific name of the Brown Treesnake, Boiga irregularis. The key words in the second search were repellent, fumigant, toxicant, or control (or any variations of these words) together with the word snake or snakes. In contrast to the research and development of vertebrate pest control agents for rodents …

Diet Overlap Of Native And Translocated Northern White-Tailed Deer In Southeastern Louisiana, Brian Matthew Zielinski Mar 1999

Diet Overlap Of Native And Translocated Northern White-Tailed Deer In Southeastern Louisiana, Brian Matthew Zielinski

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

I used microhistological analysis of fecal pellets to estimate and compare seasonal diet compositions between free-ranging, southern and translocated. northern woodland white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) on Golden Ranch Hunting Farm, Gheens, Louisiana,. over four consecutive seasons, from January 1997 through January 1998. I analyzed pellet groups with Near Infrared Reflectance Spectroscopy (NIRS) and wet chemistry techniques to evaluate and compare crude protein levels between populations of deer and provide indices of diet quality. On average, native and translocated deer diets were 87.65% similar during the entire study, and were significantly associated during all seasons ( P < 0.0000 I ). suggesting that deer fed on similar plant species in like quantities throughout the year. Few differences were found in plant selection frequencies per fecal sample. hut significant differences were detected (P 0.00 l) among deer populations in the use of Berchemia scandens and Vitis rotundifolia during spring. Northern deer also ingested a greater diversity of plants (P < 0.05) during spring and winter; and fecal crude protein levels were similar (P > 0.05) in all seasons …

Diets Of White-Tailed Deer At Avery Island, Louisiana, Nathan D. Rains Mar 1999

Diets Of White-Tailed Deer At Avery Island, Louisiana, Nathan D. Rains

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

I conducted a food habits study of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) at Avery Island, Louisiana, to determine if deer diets differed among seasons. In 1997, I randomly collected 25 seasonal fecal pellet groups in January. April, August and October respectively I also collected reference forage plant samples in conjunction with fecal pellet collections I estimated botanical composition of deer diets based on a microscopic analysis of fecal pellets I compared diets using a chi- squared contingency table to assess significant seasonal variation I also used Kulczynski's similarity index to determine degree of similarity among seasonal diets

I found significant differences …
