Report From Sundance 1999: Religion In Independent Film

Journal of Religion & Film

The following essay is a report on eleven of the movies recently shown at the Sundance Film Festival. Each of these movies is related in one way or another to religion or to one of the many religious themes found frequently in film. Many of these movies will not be widely distributed and those interested in religion and film might never know about them. The main reason for my trip to Sundance, and this essay, is to bring to the attention of our JR & F readers some of the independent movies that might otherwise escape their attention. I have …

Intermediate Rings Between A Local Domain And Its Completion, William Heinzer, Christel Rotthaus, Sylvia Wiegand Apr 1999

Intermediate Rings Between A Local Domain And Its Completion, William Heinzer, Christel Rotthaus, Sylvia Wiegand

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

We consider the structure of certain intermediate domains between a local Noetherian domain Rand an ideal-adic completion R* of R that arise as the intersection of R* with a field containing R. In the case where the intersection domain A can be expressed as a directed union of localized polynomial extension rings of R, the computation of A is easier. We examine conditions for this to happen. We also present examples to motivate and illustrate the concepts considered.

The Effects Of An Interactive Multimedia Program On Teachers' Understanding And Implementation Of An Inclusive Practice, Joseph B. Fisher, Donald D. Deshler, Jean B. Schumaker Apr 1999

The Effects Of An Interactive Multimedia Program On Teachers' Understanding And Implementation Of An Inclusive Practice, Joseph B. Fisher, Donald D. Deshler, Jean B. Schumaker

Peer Reviewed Articles

The effects of an interactive multimedia program on teachers' understanding and implementation of an inclusive practice were examined. Fifty-eight pre-service teachers and 10 in-service teachers were randomly assigned to one of two teacher development programs. The first, called the Virtual Workshop, was a computer-based, interactive multimedia program. The second, called the Actual Workshop, was a traditional, live, presenter-directed program. Results indicated that compared to their pretest scores, the post-test scores earned by participants on the tests of knowledge and understanding of the inclusive practice significantly improved after participation in both workshops. No statistically significant difference was found between the post-test …

Annual Survival Of Snail Kites In Florida: Radio Telemetry Versus Capture-Resighting Data, Robert E. Bennetts, Victoria J. Dreitz, Wiley M. Kitchens, James E. Hines, James D. Nichols Apr 1999

Annual Survival Of Snail Kites In Florida: Radio Telemetry Versus Capture-Resighting Data, Robert E. Bennetts, Victoria J. Dreitz, Wiley M. Kitchens, James E. Hines, James D. Nichols

Wildlife Biology Faculty Publications

We estimated annual survival of Snail Kites (Rostrhamus sociabilis) in Florida using the Kaplan-Meier estimator with data from 271 radio-tagged birds over a three-year period and capture-recapture (resighting) models with data from 1,319 banded birds over a six-year period. We tested the hypothesis that survival differed among three age classes using both data sources. We tested additional hypotheses about spatial and temporal variation using a combination of data from radio telemetry and single- and multistrata capture-recapture models. Results from these data sets were similar in their indications of the sources of variation in survival, but they differed in …

The Games Children Play: A Look At Children's Past Times In Southern Ghana, Johanna H. Coleman

African Diaspora ISPs

This Independent Study Project will focus on children throughout Ghana. It will be compiled by using notes, observations, journal entries, lecturers, and conversations of the author. I wish to pinpoint the everyday life and activities of a child in Ghana, oftentimes more specifically in Cape Coast in Komenda. This paper will be divided into three chapters. The first chapter will give a general outlook of children's past times as observed and interpreted by myself, such as favourite sports, activities, and games. The second chapter will consist of aspects of home stay life and what was observed during my stay, mainly …

Self Service: Self-Concept Enhancement In High School Students In A Service Learning Program, Sarah Foster Apr 1999

Self Service: Self-Concept Enhancement In High School Students In A Service Learning Program, Sarah Foster

Thesis, Dissertations, Student Creative Activity, and Scholarship

This study attempted to answer the question of whether participation in a high school service learning program can be linked to increases in measures of self-esteem in students. Proponents of service learning claim that it is a valuable means of engaging students, increasing comprehension, and fostering citizenship, but the positive psychological effects are often overlooked.

The Rosenberg (1965) Self-Esteem Scale was used to measure self-esteem levels. Personal interviews were also conducted and coded categorically into scales for self-values of competence, self-determination, personal unity, and moral worth. This coding was done according to a framework created by Gordon (1982). The results …

Reconsidering The Charter And Election Boundaries, Mark Carter Apr 1999

Reconsidering The Charter And Election Boundaries, Mark Carter

Dalhousie Law Journal

This article argues for a judicial interpretation of the right to vote under s.3 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms that places more emphasis upon ihe principle of the equal power of every vote-"one person, one vote"--than maybe suggested by the Supreme Court of Canada's decision in Reference re: Electoral Boundaries Commission Act. This becomes an issue of particular importance when a government is suspected of engaging in gerrymandering. Gerrymandering involves enhancing expected electoral support by ensuring that fewer votes will be needed to elect representatives in ridingspredictedto support the government. Any concessions governments may wish to make …

Making Disclosure: Ideas And Interests In Canadian Securities Regulation, Christopher C. Nicholis

Dalhousie Law Journal

Early in her book, Professor Condon bemoans the general lack of Canadian scholarship in the area of securities regulation. Not only is there very little theoretical work in this field, she notes, but also, "even historically descriptive accounts of the Ontario Securities Commission have been notable by their infrequency" (at 15).'

Political Violence In The United States: Apocalyptic Typologies Of Left And Right Wing Political Groups And Their Violence Through The Period 1990-1997, Gordon Daniel Green Apr 1999

Political Violence In The United States: Apocalyptic Typologies Of Left And Right Wing Political Groups And Their Violence Through The Period 1990-1997, Gordon Daniel Green

Masters Theses

Historically the study of apocalyptic groups has occupied the "exotic fringe" of political science (Flanagan 1996). With the use of textual analysis, historical description, and participant observation as its main research methods, there has been little progress made in the study of these groups. By using data analysis of incidents of violence to compare the violent actions of apocalyptic groups, a better understanding of reasons for the use of violence by these groups can be found.

Six apocalyptic groups are studied and categorized into a typology of apocalypticism. The Rescue Movement and End-Times Religious occupy the Supernatural type, Militia/Patriot and …

Golf Courses In Southern Nevada Will Significantly Impact The Water Management Efforts By Using Recycled Water Rather Than Potable Water To Irrigate Their Turf, Sean D. Ainsworth Apr 1999

Golf Courses In Southern Nevada Will Significantly Impact The Water Management Efforts By Using Recycled Water Rather Than Potable Water To Irrigate Their Turf, Sean D. Ainsworth

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

As the number of people continually move to the Las Vegas Valley and take up residence, the possibility of "running out of water" can become a reality. Having large water users (i.e. golf courses) irrigate their turf with recycled water, they will significantly impact the water management efforts in the Las Vegas Valley. When each course is irrigating their turf with recycled water, this will help ease the drinking water demand in the valley, especially during the peak demand season (summer).

Rio Natural Gas, The Alternative Fuel Of The Future, Peter Garner Apr 1999

Rio Natural Gas, The Alternative Fuel Of The Future, Peter Garner

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Automobile exhaust is a major contributor of harmful air pollutants. Exhaust emissions include water (H2O), carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon monoxide (CO), nitrous oxides (NOX), sulfur oxides (SOX), hydrocarbons (HC), and particulate matter (PM), and of these the four major air pollutants are CO, HC, NOX, and PM. Particulate matter is predominantly emitted from diesel fuel burning vehicles. In order to aid in reduction of air pollution, and reduce dependence on foreign oil imports, federal legislation has been enacted. The two prominent acts are the National Energy Security Act in 1992, which mandates use of alternative fuels, and the Clean Air …
