Private Industry Initiative At Bird Control: A Success Story, Nick Barnes, Rhian Christie, Stan Kruse
Private Industry Initiative At Bird Control: A Success Story, Nick Barnes, Rhian Christie, Stan Kruse
Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 1st (1999)
An increase in land development pressures and land use conflicts in urban centres with airports requires that a greater priority be placed on bird control and wildlife management. This is a particularly high concern for the siting and operation of landfills. Minimizing the potential for bird/wildlife interactions with aircraft is critical to maintaining air traffic safety. Browning-Ferris Industries (BFI) has demonstrated a corporate sensitivity to the bird management issue. A corporate commitment has been made to address the issue of bird management at waste management facilities in the vicinity of airports. This paper provides an overview of two case studies …

Close-Range And Satellite Remote Sensing Of Algal Biomass In The Iowa Great Lakes, Eric A. Wilson
Close-Range And Satellite Remote Sensing Of Algal Biomass In The Iowa Great Lakes, Eric A. Wilson
Department of Geography: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The utility of both close-range and satellite remote sensing for assessing inland water quality was examined in the Iowa Great Lakes. The water quality of this system is of considerable interest because of its status as an environmental, recreational, and therefore, economic resource. The broad range of optical conditions present in the lakes and the wealth of literature on the system make it an ideal environment for water quality remote sensing research. The goal of this research was to survey the water quality of the Iowa Great Lakes via remote sensing, evaluate different predictive algorithms, and map the distribution of …
Pigeon And Crows Population Control By Trapping, Ben (Ze'ev) Foux
Pigeon And Crows Population Control By Trapping, Ben (Ze'ev) Foux
Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 1st (1999)
Feral pigeons (Columba Livia) are a safety problem all around the airdrome, as they fly in big, dense flocks crossing the runways. Pigeons are also one of the worst causes of foreign object damage in the hangars and are an environmental and health hazard. The hooded crow is found around runways in Israeli air-bases, due to the thick vegetation that can be found in the bases. Other methods for bird population control in use now involve either repulsing (glue, spikes, nets) or eliminating (poison, shooting). Trapping is an environmental friendly, cost-effective long term solution, with a history of thousands of …

Monitoring The Distribution, Abundance, And Movements Of Birds Near Vancouver International Airport, M. W. Demarchi, G. F. Searing, M. K. Mcnicholl, T. Mochizuki
Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 1st (1999)
The Vancouver International Airport (YVR) is Canada’s second-busiest civil airport and is located on the Fraser River delta—the staging and wintering ground for millions of birds representing many taxonomic groups. Consequently, YVR experiences one of the highest bird-strike rates of any airport in Canada. Since 1994, LGL Limited has investigated and monitored avian ecology as it relates to existing and potential hazards to air-traffic safety at YVR. A formalized monitoring program is on-going. The distribution, abundance, and flight patterns of birds are recorded and summarized by individual species or by taxonomic group. Monthly and semiannual reports present information that depict …
The Perspectives Of The Air Line Pilots Association On Strikes Of Wildlife By Aircraft, Paul F. Eschenfelder
The Perspectives Of The Air Line Pilots Association On Strikes Of Wildlife By Aircraft, Paul F. Eschenfelder
Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 1st (1999)
Strikes of wildlife by aircraft cause thousands of life-threatening incidents, and hundreds of millions of dollars worth of damage to aircraft every year. This hazard is largely preventable, but it has not been properly addressed to date for a variety of reasons. ALPA believes that action should be taken now before a catastrophe occurs.
Collisions between aircraft and wildlife are increasing in frequency in North America due to growth in the number of migratory birds and other wildlife and the increased numbers of aircraft operations. This threat to human safety has manifested itself in several fatal strikes between aircraft and …

Raising Public Awareness Of Bird Strike Risk Issues With An Enhanced Bird Strike Committee Usa Web Site, Todd Curtis
Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 1st (1999)
Since 1997, a World Wide Web site managed by a member of Bird Strike Committee USA and a site managed by the Committee leadership were instrumental in supporting Committee efforts to reduce these hazards. Based on insights gained from these two Web sites, a new site was created that contained the most effective elements of the earlier sites and new elements designed to enhance the ability of the Committee to accomplish its mission. The new elements included the acquisition and use of the domain name birdstrike.org, the ability to electronically submit bird and other wildlife strike reports directly into the …

The Roles Of Superoxide Dismutases Of A Plant-Beneficial Bacterium, Pseudomonas Putida, And A Phytopathogenic Bacterium, Pseudomonas Syringae Pv. Syringae B728a, During Plant Colonization, Young Cheol Kim
Biology
Both Pseudomonas putida and Pseudomonas syringae produced manganese-superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) and iron-superoxide dismutase (FeSOD). Genes sodB, encoding FeSOD, and sodA, encoding MnSOD, were cloned. The sodB genes were transcribed as monocistronic transcripts, expressed throughout growth phases when iron was available. The sodA genes were part of polycistronic operons, and transcripts of the operons were induced only in iron-deficient conditions. The effect of mutations in the SOD genes was observed during root colonization by Pseudomonas putida. The sodB and sodAsodB mutants were impaired in root colonization in mixed inoculations with wild-type. Growth of the sodB and sodAsodB mutants …
Roles Of Plasma Membrane Lipids In Syringomycin E Action In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Rungrach Wangspa
Roles Of Plasma Membrane Lipids In Syringomycin E Action In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Rungrach Wangspa
Biology
The bacterium Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae produces an antifungal secondary metabolite, syringomycin E. Yeast growth inhibition by this lipodepsipeptide involves sterol and sphingolipids of the plasma membrane. Using a sterol auxotroph of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, strain FY-14, it was shown that the predominant sterol in yeast, ergosterol, is not required for the mechanism of action of this metabolite. With ergosterol, cholesterol, β-sitosterol or stigmasterol as the bulk sterol, strain FY-14 was sensitive to syringomycin E with the last two conferring the highest degree of sensitivity. The type of growth-promoting sterol influenced cellular sensitivity to syringomycin E. Growth-promoting ergosterol afforded the …

The hurried aspects of daily living exhaust me. Speed is the operative word. Apparently everyone wants more of it. Not me. While I value the innovations that speed up my onerous tasks, in my artwork I am attracted to its opposite--repose. I try to slow the pace of life around me, capturing those moments of stillness. This thesis examines a body of work, eight paintings and four drawings, that reflect this aversion to speed.

Is There A Focal Meaning Of Being In Aristotle?, Jiyuan Yu
Is There A Focal Meaning Of Being In Aristotle?, Jiyuan Yu
The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter
At the beginning of Metaphysics Γ Aristotle claims that there is a science which is concerned with being qua being. 'Being’ is said in many senses. Different beings are not said to be purely homonymous, but rather to be “related to one thing (πρόσ ἕν)”(1003a33- 4). G.E.L Owen translates this ττρός ἕν formula as "focal meaning", and in his paraphrase, it means that all the “senses [of ‘being’] have one focus, one common element”, or “a central sense”, so that “all its senses can be explained in terms of substance and of the sense of ‘being’ that is appropriate to …

Does Tall Grass Reduce Bird Numbers On Airports?: Results Of Pen Test With Canada Geese And Field Trials At Two Airports, 1998, Thomas W. Seamans, Richard A. Dolbeer, Mark S. Carrara, Richard B. Chipman
Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 1st (1999)
A suggested management plan to reduce bird numbers and bird-aircraft collisions at airports is to maintain grass 15-25 cm high. However, 3 studies conducted in the United States in 1998 indicated tall-grass management may not result in fewer birds. First, Canada geese (Branta canadensis), in a replicated experiment lasting 9 days in 6 pens in Ohio, showed no preference (P = 0.53) for short-grass (4-11 cm) over tall-grass (16-21 cm) plots. Second, we compared bird use of 8 tall- (23.3 ± 0.5 cm high, x ± SE) and 8 short- (14.3 ± 0.2) grass plots totaling 46 ha at Burke …

Ecology Of The Malay Civet (Viverra Tangalunga) In A Logged And An Unlogged Forest In Sabah, East Malaysia, Christina P. Colon
Publications and Research
Malay civets in a dipterocarp rain forest were studied from December, 1995, through June, 1997, in the Ulu Segama Forest Reserve in Sabah, East Malaysia. To investigate the basic ecology of this species and explore the potential impact of selective logging, data on home range, activity and diet were collected on study animals in an unlogged and a selectively logged forest, and comparisons made.
Density in the unlogged forest was 1/0.46 km2 , and 1/1.07 km2 in the logged forest. Mean home range size based on a 95% minimum convex polygon was 110 ha. and did not differ …

Is There An Obligation To Listen?, Leslie Gielow Jacobs
Is There An Obligation To Listen?, Leslie Gielow Jacobs
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
This Article thoroughly considers the question whether the constitutional guarantee of "freedom of speech" includes an obligation to listen. It first reviews the scopes of the right to speak, the right to listen, and the right to be left alone from things other than unwanted speech, and the relevance to each of physical location. It concludes that, consistent with constitutional doctrine and the Court's articulations, the government's ability to protect individuals from unwanted speech should not vary according to the listener's location. After noting that the actual protection of unwilling listeners may differ because of the different physical realities of …
