Use Of Alum To Inhibit Ammonia Volatilization And To Decrease Phosphorus Solubility In Poultry Litter, Philip A. Moore Jr.

Patents Granted

Short term control of ammonia volatilization from animal manures is provided by surface treatment with aluminum sulfate. The aluminum sulfate may be applied to manure or manure receiving surfaces in an animal rearing facility in solid or liquid form. The control of atmospheric ammonia levels in animal rearing facilities to preferably less than about 25 ppm ammonia can be achieved by surface treatment employing amounts of alum as low as 0.5% by weight alum based on manure present.

Synecology And Disturbance Regimes Of Sagebrush Steppe Ecosystems, Neil E. West Jun 1999

Synecology And Disturbance Regimes Of Sagebrush Steppe Ecosystems, Neil E. West

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

The pre-Columbian mixed-growth form, composition, and structure of sagebrush steppes was mostly due to the highly variable semiarid climate and long fire-free intervals. The weak stability of this relatively complex vegetation was easily upset by excessive livestock grazing, especially in drought periods. After a few decades of uncontrolled livestock grazing, it was easy for introduced winter annuals, especially cheatgrass, to dominate the understory and alter the fire regime to larger, more frequent fires that occur earlier in the year. Accelerated soil erosion has caused many sites to lose the potential for management back toward native perennial dominance by controlling only …

Estructura Del Condrocráneo Y Esqueleto Visceral De Larvas De Pseudis Minuta (Anura, Pseudidae, E. O. Lavilla, Rafael O. De Sá

Biology Faculty Publications

The chondrocranium and visceral skeleton of Pseudis minuta tadpoles are described, based on a series of five larvae in stages 31 - 35 of Gosner (1960). Among their striking characters are the presence of peculiar articular surfaces between cornua trabeculae and suprarostral cartilage, the incomplete development of the orbital cartilage, the high fenestration of the floor of the cavum cranii, the fusion of posterior foramina, and the fusion of spicules 3 and 4 in the hyobranchial skeleton.

Barriers To U.S.-European Agricultural Trade, George H. Pfeiffer Jun 1999

Barriers To U.S.-European Agricultural Trade, George H. Pfeiffer

Cornhusker Economics

Serious threats to continuation of good trade relations between the U.S. and the European Union (EU) have arisen recently affecting both plant and animal products. The ostensible justification for European import bans on U.S. beef is based largely on the use of hormones and growth stimulants by U.S. cattle producers, a practice that is not permitted in Europe. Threats to the export of grain and oil seed products as well as the seeds themselves are related to European reluctance to introduce genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in the food supply. A cynical view of the existence of trade barriers is that …

Interaction Between Fgf And Bmp Signaling Pathways Regulates Development Of Metanephric Mesenchyme., Andrew T. Dudley, R. E. Godin, E. J. Robertson Jun 1999

Interaction Between Fgf And Bmp Signaling Pathways Regulates Development Of Metanephric Mesenchyme., Andrew T. Dudley, R. E. Godin, E. J. Robertson

Journal Articles: Genetics, Cell Biology & Anatomy

Nephrogenesis in the mouse kidney begins at embryonic day 11 and ends approximately 10 days postpartum. During this period, new nephrons are continually being generated from a stem-cell population-the nephrogenic mesenchyme-in response to signals emanating from the tips of the branching ureter. Relatively little is known about the mechanism by which the nephrogenic mesenchyme cell population is maintained at the tips of the ureter in the presence of signals promoting tubulogenesis. Previous studies have shown that a loss of Bmp7 function leads to kidney defects that are a likely result of progressive loss of nephrogenic mesenchyme by apoptosis. The studies …
