Sponges are well known to harbor large numbers of heterotrophic microbes within their mesohyl. Studies to determine the diversity of these associated microbes have been attempted for only a few shallow water species. We cultured various microorganisms from several species of Discodermia collected from deep water using the 'Johnson-Sea-Link' manned submersibles, and characterised them by standard microbiological identification methods. Characterisation of a small proportion (ca. 10%) of the total and potential eubacterial isolate collection with molecular systematics techniques revealed a wide diversity of microbes. Phylogenetic analyses of 32 small subunit (SSU) 16S-like rRNA gene sequences from different micorbes indicated high …

State Of The Fisheries Report 1998/1999, Jim W. Penn
Status Reports of the Fisheries and Aquatic Resources
The State of the Fisheries document is designed as an essential supplement to the Annual Report to Parliament and provides a more detailed level of information to support the agency's non-financial performance measures. By summarising management changes, compliance activities and research data such as landings, effort, catch rates, stock assessment and breeding stock levels, this document provides a valuable reference point for Western Australian fisheries ofmajor importance to the commercial, recreational and aquaculture sectors. Information relevant to Fisheries WA's Fish and Fish Habitat Protection Program and activities undertaken on behalf ofthe Commonwealth is also provided. The report indicates that overall …
The Effect Of Cooperative Learning On The Spelling Achievement Of Fourth Grade Students, Elisabeth Henjes
The Effect Of Cooperative Learning On The Spelling Achievement Of Fourth Grade Students, Elisabeth Henjes
Theses and Dissertations
This research was designed to study the effect of cooperative learning instructional strategies as compared to traditional spelling instruction on fourth grade achievement in spelling. Comparisons were made between the spelling achievement of thirteen fourth grade students when they were taught by cooperative learning strategies and the spelling achievement of these same fourth grade students when they were taught by traditional spelling instructional methods. The cooperative learning instructional methods used were a combination of Classwide Peer Tutoring and Student Teams-Achievement Division (STAD). To control for certain variables a second treatment of traditional spelling instructional methods was implemented after the cooperative …

Protecting Children With Nonorganic Failure To Thrive, Deirdra Hoolahan
Protecting Children With Nonorganic Failure To Thrive, Deirdra Hoolahan
Theses and Graduate Projects
Nonorganic failure to thrive (NOFTT) children are at risk. Their physical, cognitive and social development are threatened. They need more than hospitalized medical treatment, but also long-term intervention that will protect them from further neglect and damage. Through a method of policy analysis this research explores the definition of nonorganic failure to thrive in the context of child neglect, and how social policies protect children with NOFTT from further damaging neglect. This research found strengths in Child Protective Service's ability to receive reports of child neglect and weakness in that many children who are neglected do not receive the needed …

Victim Of "Another B.I.A. Blunder:" Individual Indian Title And The General Allotment Act, Pete Petersen
Student Thesis Honors (1996-2008)
Navajo tribal members are in dispute over tribal ancestral lands, one claiming a right from a federal allotment patent and the other asserting individual aboriginal rights. In 1909, an allotment application for an allotment was made on behalf of Reuben Mariano for land then located outside the boundaries of the Navajo Indian reservation. The allotment patent was issued pursuant to the General Allotment Act for land in northwest New Mexico. Mariano never lived on the tract because Mary Bah Arviso and her family were settled there. Mariano argued that although his patent was not issued until 1964, his application for …

Communicating Through Photographs: A Guide For Public Relations Professionals, Carol Ann Desimine
Communicating Through Photographs: A Guide For Public Relations Professionals, Carol Ann Desimine
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of preparing this guide was to create a resource for public relations professionals to refer to when faced with the task of placing photographs in publications. The assumption is that most public relations professionals are not trained to think visually, partly because their education is focused on writing and virtually ignores aesthetics. Since readership surveys find that people prefer photographs over the written word, and that pictures capture attention quicker than headlines, it is essential that public relations people know how to use visuals to enhance a message. The primary research methods of this study were examination of …
