Sex, Culture, And The Biology Of Rape: Toward Explanation And Prevention, Owen D. Jones Jul 1999

Sex, Culture, And The Biology Of Rape: Toward Explanation And Prevention, Owen D. Jones

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

For all that has been written about rape, its multiple causes remain insufficiently understood for law to deter it effectively. This follows, in part, from inadequately interdisciplinary study of rape causation. This Article argues that integrating life science and social science perspectives on sexual aggression can improve law's model of rape behavior, and further our efforts to reduce its incidence.

The Article first explains biobehavioral theories of sexual aggression, and offers a guide to common but avoidable errors in assessing them. It then compares a number of those theories' predictions with existing data and demonstrates how knowledge of the effects …

Core-Binding Factor Influences The Disease Specificity Of Moloney Murine Leukemia Virus, Amy F. Lewis, Terryl Stacy, William R. Green, Lekidelu Taddesse-Heath, Janet W. Hartley, Nancy A. Speck Jul 1999

Core-Binding Factor Influences The Disease Specificity Of Moloney Murine Leukemia Virus, Amy F. Lewis, Terryl Stacy, William R. Green, Lekidelu Taddesse-Heath, Janet W. Hartley, Nancy A. Speck

Dartmouth Scholarship

The core site in the Moloney murine leukemia virus (Moloney MLV) enhancer was previously shown to be an important determinant of the T-cell disease specificity of the virus. Mutation of the core site resulted in a significant shift in disease specificity of the Moloney virus from T-cell leukemia to erythroleukemia. We and others have since determined that a protein that binds the core site, one of the core-binding factors (CBF) is highly expressed in thymus and is essential for hematopoiesis. Here we test the hypothesis that CBF plays a critical role in mediating pathogenesis of Moloney MLV in vivo. We …

Density-Dependent Effects Of A Toxicant On Life-History Traits And Population Dynamics Of A Capitellid Polychaete, Inez Linke-Gamenick, Valery E. Forbes, Richard M. Sibly

Valery Forbes Publications

The toxic effects of the widespread polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH), fluoranthene (FLU), on Life-history traits of Capitella sp. M as a function of population density were investigated in a life-table-response-experiment (LTRE) lasting 134 d. Animals from laboratory cultures were exposed to 6 different FLU concentrations (range 0 to 80 μg FLU [g dry wt sed]–1, ppm) at 3 population densities (range 529 to 36 842 worms m–2), and survivorship, growth rate until maturity, and reproductive parameters were recorded. Fluoranthene exposure significantly reduced juvenile survivorship in a concentration- dependent manner, whereas population density had no effect on …

Experience As Art, Sor-Hoon Tan Jul 1999

Experience As Art, Sor-Hoon Tan

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Chinese philosophy views experience as intrinsically aesthetic. This world view could be elucidated through a consideration of John Dewey's aesthetics and features of Chinese art. Dewey's philosophy of art starts with an understanding of experience as 'live processes' of living creatures interacting with their environment. Such processes are autopoietic in being self-sustaining, ever-changing, capable of increasing complexity, capable of generating novelty, direction and progress on its own. Its autopoietic character is a precondition of the aesthetic in the process of experience. An aesthetic experience is rhythmic, focused, consummatory, and reaches beyond the transitory boundaries of concrete existence. The aesthetic is …

Dynamic And Interactive 3d Simulation Over The World Wide Web, Rajesh Vennam Jul 1999

Dynamic And Interactive 3d Simulation Over The World Wide Web, Rajesh Vennam

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The thesis presents the development of a new and novel three-dimensional simulation tool over the WWW using Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML). VRML is a 3D analog to HTML and serves as a simple, multiplatform language for publishing 3D Web pages. In general, most people use VRML for developing three-dimensional models or worlds that provide little or no interaction for the users. This tool combines interaction and dynamic object creation. A thorough study of VRML is done to explore the features of VRML that could be combined to develop methodologies for creation of dynamic and interactive 3D objects over the …

Identification And Characterization Of Determinants Of Head And Neck Tumor Cell Invasion, Yangguan Wu Jul 1999

Identification And Characterization Of Determinants Of Head And Neck Tumor Cell Invasion, Yangguan Wu

Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences

Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is a common malignant disease with poor prognosis. The majority of patients die from local invasion or lymphatic metastasis. The mechanism(s) underlining the invasiveness of HNSCC are poorly understood. Utilizing a panel of HNSCC cell lines previously established in our laboratory, we tested the application and relevance of the three-step hypothesis of tumor invasion to HNSCC and investigated the mechanism(s) pertaining to the regulation of each step in the invasive process. Data presented in this thesis demonstrated that tumor cell invasion in HNSCC is a complex process involving three repeated sequential steps: adhesion, …

Television, Low Self-Control, And Deviance: Examining Basic Elements Of Gottfredson And Hirschi's General Theory Of Crime, Moises O. Mina Jr.

Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations

In a secondary analysis of data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth (NLSY), this study examines the basic concepts of Gottfredson and Hirschi's general theory of crime. A set of variables measured at ages 6-9 was used to operationally define the concepts of self-control, parenting, and deviance. The study tests for empirical associations between self-control, deviance, and parenting. Also, television viewing is introduced as a possible cause of low self-control. Age, race, and gender are included as statistical controls. Models of self-control and deviance were developed to analyze these relationships. Results found qualified support for the existence of significant …

Factors That Affect Recidivism Of Offenders On Electronic Monitoring In Norfolk, Virginia, Michael P. O'Toole

Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to investigate which factors impact offenders' recidivism on electronic monitoring. Research on electronic monitoring has mainly concentrated on individual program completion rates. A review of the available literature on electronic monitoring reveals few evaluative studies focusing on offender recidivism. No long term recidivism studies are available for electronic monitoring. The present research reviews 277 offenders five years after completing their electronic monitoring sentence in Norfolk, Virginia. The following factors as they may relate to offenders' recidivism, while on electronic monitoring are measured: current offense, prior conviction, offenders' age, sentence length, and employment history. Analyses …

Gender Roles Presented In Children's Literature: A Random Selection And Analysis Of Non-Award Winning Books, Renae M. Poarch Jul 1999

Gender Roles Presented In Children's Literature: A Random Selection And Analysis Of Non-Award Winning Books, Renae M. Poarch

Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the gender role stereotyping that occurs in children's non-award winning literature. This vast selection of non-award winning books has been neglected by researchers when selecting a sample to study. Past research has concentrated on the Caldecott and Newbery Award Winning books, which are not the majority of those owned by public libraries, hence not the majority being read by young readers. The purpose of this study was not to provide a list of appropriate reading material for parents and educators to select from, but rather provide an awareness of the issues so …

Sovereignty's Alchemy: An Analysis Of Delgamuukw V. British Columbia, John Borrows Jul 1999

Sovereignty's Alchemy: An Analysis Of Delgamuukw V. British Columbia, John Borrows

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

In Delgamuukw v. British Columbia, the Supreme Court of Canada issued its long-awaited judgment on the status of Aboriginal title under section 35(1) of the Constitution Act, 1982. The decision was regarded as highly significant because it seemed to fundamentally alter the law of Aboriginal rights. This article suggests that while the case has somewhat positively changed the law to protect Aboriginal title, it has also simultaneously sustained a legal framework that undermines Aboriginal land rights. In particular, the decision's unreflective acceptance of Crown sovereignty places Aboriginal title in a subordinate position relative to other legal rights. This article examines …

Evolving Neural Networks Applied To Predator-Evader Problem, Shivakumar Viswanathan, Ilker Ersoy, Filiz Bunyak, Cihan H. Dagli Jul 1999

Evolving Neural Networks Applied To Predator-Evader Problem, Shivakumar Viswanathan, Ilker Ersoy, Filiz Bunyak, Cihan H. Dagli

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

The creation of strategies to meet abstract goals is an important behavior exhibited by natural organisms. A situation requiring the development of such strategies is the predator-evader problem. To study this problem, Khepera robots are chosen as the competing agents. Using computer simulations the evolution of the adaptive behavior is studied in a predator-evader interaction. A bilaterally symmetrical multilayer perceptron neural network architecture with evolvable weights is used to model the “brains” of the agents. Evolutionary programming is employed to evolve the predator for developing adaptive strategies to meet its goals. To study the effect of learning on evolution a …

Dichotomy Between Naïve And Memory Cd4+ T Cell Responses To Fas Engagement, J. Desbarats, T. Wade, W. F. Wade, M. K. Newell

Dartmouth Scholarship

Engagement of Fas (APO-1, CD95), a member of the tumor necrosis factor receptor superfamily, can induce apoptotic cell death. However, Fas engagement also can costimulate lymphocyte proliferation. The physiologic regulation of these two outcomes is poorly understood. Here, we have used two systems, the first in vitro and the second in vivo, to demonstrate that naïve and memory CD4+ T cells display dichotomous responses to Fas ligation. Naïve CD4+ T cells (CD44lo, CD45RB+, CD62L+) die as a consequence of Fas ligation in the presence of anti-CD3 antibody, whereas memory T cells (CD44hi, CD45RB−, CD62L−), freshly isolated from the same …

Rare, Imperiled, And Recently Extinct Or Extirpated Mollusks Of Utah: A Literature Review, George V. Oliver, William R. Bosworth, Iii, State Of Utah Department Of Natural Resources

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

About 139 species of mollusks are known to occur, or within historical times to have occurred, in Utah. The number of known Utah mollusks is not fixed and can be expected to continue to change, increasing as new molluscan discoveries are made in Utah and possibly decreasing as taxonomic revisions change our concept of how many valid mollusk species exist. This report represents one of the end products of a review of literature—published journal articles and books as well as unpublished agency reports—dealing with mollusks in Utah. The goals of this review were to determine (1) which species have been …
