How Do You Learn From A River? Managing Uncertainty In Species Conservation Policy, John M. Volkman
How Do You Learn From A River? Managing Uncertainty In Species Conservation Policy, John M. Volkman
Washington Law Review
As the Puget Sound region embarks on a new chapter in the story of the Endangered Species Act, experiences with fish and wildlife restoration efforts in other locations can be instructive. This Article reviews conservation efforts in the Columbia River Basin, and it explains the major role that scientific uncertainty plays in salmon conservation efforts. This discussion describes the debate between traditional fish and wildlife management, which focuses more on individual populations and mitigation technologies, and recent scientific reports, which urge more reliance on naturally functioning rivers and watersheds. The Article also describes a variety of learning tools that have …

Characterization of relationships between grazing and vegetation responses is difficult. Rapid and accurate measurement of pasture canopy characteristics would help clarify these relationships if canopy changes are directly related to grazing variables. The objectives of this study were (1) to evaluate use of the LI-COR LAI-2000 for quantification of changes in canopy density and architecture in response to defoliation by cattle, (2) to determine if changes in leaf area index (LAI) measured with the LAI-2000 are related to stocking rate, and (3) to determine advantages and drawbacks of the LAI-2000 for monitoring grazing impacts on canopy density and architecture. Leaf …

Challenges For Directors Of University Natural Science Museums, Hugh H. Genoways
Challenges For Directors Of University Natural Science Museums, Hugh H. Genoways
University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers
Universities and natural science museums have a long, productive history; however, this has been an uneasy alliance in the United States at least since the 1880s. Decreasing resources and increasing expectations have made the position of all museum directors extremely difficult, but the situation for university natural science museum directors is probably the most complicated among these because they direct museums that are small administrative units within larger university organizations. Some of their challenges include conflict between museum and university missions, governance issues, relationship between director and the university administrator/board member, lack of understanding of museum functions, middle management role …

Predicting The Cutting Time Of Cottage Cheese Using Backscatter Measurements, Czarena L. Crofcheck, Frederick A. Payne, Sue E. Nokes
Predicting The Cutting Time Of Cottage Cheese Using Backscatter Measurements, Czarena L. Crofcheck, Frederick A. Payne, Sue E. Nokes
Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications
An automated system for monitoring culture growth and determining coagulum cutting time is needed for cottage cheese manufacturing. A light backscatter measurement system was designed and installed in a local cottage cheese manufacturing plant. A cutting time prediction algorithm was developed using parameters generated from the backscatter profile. The cutting time prediction algorithm, Tcut = Tmax + β2 S, used two time-based parameters generated from the backscatter profile (Tmax and S) and one operator selected parameter, β2, to predict the coagulum cutting time, Tcut. The standard error of prediction for the algorithm was 6.4 …
Critical Intercultural Dialogue, Michael James
Critical Intercultural Dialogue, Michael James
Faculty Journal Articles
Cultural pluralism assumes the persistence of inter-group conflicts and poses the question of how members of multiethnic liberal democracies should address disagreements stemming from divergent cultural values. Allowing groups greater cultural autonomy resolves some problems, but does not address those that arise when different cultural values suggest divergent answers to questions of common concern. These can be addressed through developing practices of critical intercultural dialogue that will provide a basis for mutual understanding of group values and valid intercultural criticism. Such critical intercultural dialogue is based on three criteria: the priority of understanding the other's values to criticism of them, …
Analysis Of The Caloric Expenditure Of Students In Middle School Physical Education Classes, Wendy Granum Frappier
Analysis Of The Caloric Expenditure Of Students In Middle School Physical Education Classes, Wendy Granum Frappier
Theses and Dissertations
According to the recent Surgeon General's Report guidelines, all Americans including children need to bum a minimum of 150 calories in daily physical activity or approximately 1,000 calories a week to meet minimum healthy activity standards. The purpose of the study was to assess the caloric expenditure of students in middle school physical education classes to determine if they were expending a sufficient amount of calories in physical education classes to meet the minimum healthy activity recommendations. More specifically, the study determined the differences in caloric expenditure and various physical activities, the relationship between heart rate and caloric expenditure, sex …
Take My Thesis…Please! The Art Of Stand-Up Comedy, Kyle J. Dukart
Take My Thesis…Please! The Art Of Stand-Up Comedy, Kyle J. Dukart
Theses and Dissertations
In my thesis, I explore the artistry of stand-up comedy primarily by concentrating on five aspects of the genre that one generally uses to discuss literature: theme, persona, language, narrative structure, and audience. My purpose is to critically analyze a mode of artistic expression that is rarely given serious academic consideration
To accomplish this purpose I researched various theories of comedy and then proceeded to listen to and read about dozens of stand-up comedians. Using my own and other's knowledge of comedy and literature, I then closely analyze parts of routines from ten of the comedians I studied, including Lenny …

Green-Water Rearing And Delayed Weaning Improve Growth And Survival Of Summer Flounder, David A. Bengtson, Lindsay Lydon, Jeffrey D. Ainley
Fisheries, Animal and Veterinary Sciences Faculty Publications
The advent of an aquaculture industry for summer flounder Paralichthys dentatus requires that optimal methods be identified for hatchery production. Two experiments were conducted to test strategies for larval rearing and for weaning newly metamorphosed juveniles from live to artificial diets. Rearing of larvae in ‘‘green water’’ (with algae added) resulted in better survival (76.1 6 6.5%) from days 5–42 after hatching than did rearing in ‘‘clear water’’ (no algae added; 27.8 6 13.6%), although no differences in growth were apparent. When fish were weaned from live feed beginning at day 45 versus day 57 by either a ‘‘gradual’’ method …

Adoption In The Progressive Era: Preserving, Creating, And Re-Creating Families, Chris Guthrie, Joanna L. Grossman
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
The history of adoption law and practice has received scant attention from legal scholars and historians. Most of what little scholarship there is focuses on the history of adoption to the mid-nineteenth century, when the first adoption statutes emerged in the United States. Although the enactment of these statutes has been hailed as "an historic moment in the history of Anglo-American family and society" and "the most far-reaching innovation of nineteenth-century custody law," few scholars have made an effort to document the actual operation of adoption law following the enactment of these landmark statutes. This article does just that. Drawing …
