Conversion Of New Circle Road To A Limited Access Highway, Steven M. Henderson, Nikiforos Stamatiadis Aug 1999

Conversion Of New Circle Road To A Limited Access Highway, Steven M. Henderson, Nikiforos Stamatiadis

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The objectives of this study were to first evaluate the existing traffic conditions along the NE part of New Circle Road and investigate the use of unconventional left turn treatments, as well as other access restrictions to improve the operating conditions of New Circle Road. The alternatives examined include a do-nothing alternative, the addition of one through lane per direction, the use of median U-turns at various locations, and combinations of them. Restrictive left turn strategies proved to be a more successful tool for traffic management on New Circle Road than simply adding a lane in each direction. Using median …

Modifications Of Nitric Oxide And Sexual Behavior In Prenatally Stressed Male Rats, Stephen D. Miller Aug 1999

Modifications Of Nitric Oxide And Sexual Behavior In Prenatally Stressed Male Rats, Stephen D. Miller

Master's Theses

Normal male sexual differentiation is the culmination of perfectly timed, prenatal gonadal hormone release. Prenatal stress (PS) has a detrimental effect upon this process, obstructing the natural development of brain structures and sexual behavior. Prenatally-stressed male rats exhibit many physiological and neuroendocrinological differences when compared to control males. PS has a particularly harmful effect upon male sexual behavior, to which the neurotransmitter nitric oxide (NO) has been shown to be intimately involved. The present experiment examined whether PS reduces nNOS, the rate limiting enzyme of NO, in the medial preoptic area (rnPOA) of male rats, and whether administration of the …

Saugatuck's Shining Shore: The Transition Of A Michigan Community Into A Resort Town, 1870-1930, Kyran V. Kelley Aug 1999

Saugatuck's Shining Shore: The Transition Of A Michigan Community Into A Resort Town, 1870-1930, Kyran V. Kelley

Masters Theses

During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries many communities adapted themselves to the leisure industry with the growth of a middle class that had time for leisure activities within the United States. One impetus for this change suggested for the period is a lack of manufacturing and extractive activities (Brown 1995).

This thesis tests this scenario on one community of the period, Saugatuck, Michigan, by examining the employment and business structures of the town while also examining land use. This was accomplished through the use of both primary and secondary documents.

Data gathered and placed within its historical context …

Reactive Oxygen Species Generated By Depletion Of Cellular Glutathione Mediate Cadmium Cytotoxicity, Jun Xu Aug 1999

Reactive Oxygen Species Generated By Depletion Of Cellular Glutathione Mediate Cadmium Cytotoxicity, Jun Xu

Masters Theses

Studies were put forth to test whether or not reactive oxygen species, which are influenced by the cellular level of reduced glutathione, mediate the toxicity of cadmium. Cadmium has been a focal point in the health care community in the past few years because it has been shown to induce the development of tumors, interfere with cellular signaling, and cause damage to organs, tissues, and biomolecules. Although various studies and theories have been proposed, little direct evidence, especially from studies utilizing primary cells in culture, has accumulated to show the mechanism by which the cadmium induced toxicity occurs.

Our studies …

Bulletin 4371 - Growing Bamboo In Western Australia, Bob Gretton, John Burt Aug 1999

Bulletin 4371 - Growing Bamboo In Western Australia, Bob Gretton, John Burt

Bulletins 4000 -

Bamboo belongs to the subfamily Bambusoidae, a tribe of the Poaceae or grass family. They include 45 genera and over 1000 species. Many bamboo have edible shoots. The culms (stems) are fast growing, strong, light and useful as timber. These characteristics make the bamboo family valuable plants.

In Australia, there has been increasing interest in growing bamboo since the International Bamboo Congress in Bali in 1995. The principal driving forces of this new industry are edible shoot production and timber production. A Bamboo Growers Seminar was held in Brisbane in 1997. A Bamboo Growers Association for Australia was formed in …

Data Mining And Probabilistic Network-Based Mechanism For Data Warehousing, Mei-Ling Shyu, R. L. Kashyap

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

A good multirmedia database managerment systerm (MDBMS) should be able to store, retrieve, and manage rich semantic data in multimedia database syst, ems. Due to the complexity of real-world applications, the number of databases and the volumes of data in databases have increased tremendously. With the explosive growth in the amount and complexity of data, how to effectively manage the network of databases and utilize the large amount of data becomes important. For this purpose, a probabilistic network-based mechanism for constructing a federation of data warehouses and speeding up information retrieval to facilitate the functionality of an MDBMS is proposed. Our …

Acetaminophen Stimulates Proliferation Of Breast Cancer Cells, Eugenia Harnagea Theophilus Aug 1999

Acetaminophen Stimulates Proliferation Of Breast Cancer Cells, Eugenia Harnagea Theophilus

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Acetaminophen is a common analgesic/antipyretic. This research projected investigated the interaction of acetaminophen with breast cancer cells. The first goal was to determine if acetaminophen induces proliferation in cancerous and normal, human breast cells. Pharmacological concentrations of acetaminophen stimulated proliferation (3H-thymidine incorporation into DNA, % S phase cells, cell numbers) of estrogen and progesterone receptor positive (ER+/PR+) but not of ER-/PR+ or of ER-/PR- cancer or normal breast cells. The second goal was to determine if estrogen receptors play a role in acetaminophen-induced proliferation of ER+ breast cancer cells. Antiestrogens inhibited acetaminophen-induced proliferation, suggesting that ERs are involved in proliferation. …

Alterations Of Vascular Endothelial Nitric Oxide Synthase Activity And Substrate Availability In Chronic Renal Disease, Shen Xiao

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Hypertension and other cardiovascular complications are the major causes of hospitalization and death in patients with chronic renal diseases (CRD). Our laboratory has previously reported that total nitric oxide (NO) production is decreased in CRD. The overall objective in my present series of studies is to investigate the alterations of endothelial NO system and the possible mechanisms in CRD.;In the study on CRD patients who still have residual renal function (∼30% of normal GFR), we found that the plasma from these patients did not affect L-arginine transport into endothelial cells but significantly inhibited endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) activity from …

Single Parents And Organizational Commitment, Absenteeism, And Internal Motivation: An Initial Investigation, Melissa D. Broughton Aug 1999

Single Parents And Organizational Commitment, Absenteeism, And Internal Motivation: An Initial Investigation, Melissa D. Broughton

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This study examined the relationship between group membership (by maritalstatus and sex) and the salience of the family role identities of caregiver and provider. It was expected that both the provider and caregiver roles would be salient for single parents. Results indicated that mothers identified with the caregiver role to a greater extent than fathers. However, no support was found for the idea that custodial single fathers identify with the caregiver role to the same extent as mothers. Results marginally supported the idea that custodial single mothers identify with the provider role as highly as fathers do, whereas married mothers …

Research questions about introductions

Several research questions need to be answered to help ensure that proposed introductions are done wisely and safely.

Guarding against risks without sacrificing benefits:
How can the potential benefits and costs of introductions best be evaluated in economic, environmental, and social terms?
Should all introductions be regulated?
How different must organisms or recipient ecosystems be from those assessed previously to warrant independent assessment?
When is it appropriate to assess and regulate taxa other than species?
What are appropriate ecological and political boundaries for regulation?

Alternatives to introductions:
How and when can indigenous organisms be domesticated so …

The Significance Of Shape-Shifting And Transformation In Medieval Welsh And Icelandic Literature: The Ingenuity Of Medieval Writers, Samantha J. Cairo Aug 1999

The Significance Of Shape-Shifting And Transformation In Medieval Welsh And Icelandic Literature: The Ingenuity Of Medieval Writers, Samantha J. Cairo

Masters Theses

The folk-motifs of shape-shifting and transformation are an important mechanism in both Medieval Welsh and Icelandic literature. To better understand these motifs it is important to consider the ideas behind and the belief in these concepts. The role of the shaman and the separable soul, the Double, and the psychological projection all form a basis for shape-shifting in Medieval literature.

The Welsh literature will include: Pwyll, Prince qf Dyfed, Manawydan Son of Llyr, Math Son of Mathonwy, Lludd and Llefelys, Culhwch and Olwen, Peredur Son of Efrawg, The Hanes Taliesin,/em>, and the transformational poetry of Taliesin. The Icelandic literature …
