The Hidden Work Of The Farm Homemaker, Deborah B. Reed, Susan C. Westneat, Steven R. Browning, Lana Skarke Aug 1999

The Hidden Work Of The Farm Homemaker, Deborah B. Reed, Susan C. Westneat, Steven R. Browning, Lana Skarke

Preventive Medicine and Environmental Health Faculty Publications

Despite women’s involvement in agricultural production, the work role of women residing in farm households has not been thoroughly examined. Data collected in 1994-1995 as part of the NIOSH-sponsored Farm Family Health and Hazard Surveillance Project were used to address task issues and health status of farm women in Kentucky. In 1996, the farm woman component of the Kentucky study was replicated in five counties in west Texas, allowing an examination of farm women in two large agricultural states. The Kentucky study employed a two-stage cluster design;the Texas study was based on a systematic quota sample of farms. Both studies …

Modularity In Technology, Organization, And Society, Richard N. Langlois Aug 1999

Modularity In Technology, Organization, And Society, Richard N. Langlois

Economics Working Papers

Modularity is a very general set of principles for managing complexity. By breaking up a complex system into discrete modules - which can then communicate with one another only through standardized interfaces within a standardized architecture - one can eliminate what would otherwise be an unmanageable spaghetti tangle of systemic interconnections. Such ideas are not new in the literature of technological design (Simon 1962, Alexander 1964), even if, as some claim (Baldwin and Clark 1997), modularity is becoming more important today because of the increased complexity of modern technology. What is new is the application of the idea of modularity …

Pituitary Adenylate Cyclase Activating Peptide Phase Shifts Circadian Rhythms In A Manner Similar To Light, Mary E. Harrington, Sabina Hoque, Adam Hall, Diego Golombek, Stephany Biello Aug 1999

Pituitary Adenylate Cyclase Activating Peptide Phase Shifts Circadian Rhythms In A Manner Similar To Light, Mary E. Harrington, Sabina Hoque, Adam Hall, Diego Golombek, Stephany Biello

Psychology: Faculty Publications

The endogenous circadian pacemaker in mammals is located in the suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN) of the hypothalamus. Various cues can reset circadian rhythm phase, thereby entraining the internal rhythm to the environmental cycle, and these effects can be investigated using an in vitro method to measure phase shifts of the SCN. Although pituitary adenylate cyclase activating peptide (PACAP) is localized in retinal inputs to the SCN, it has been reported to alter clock phase only during the subjective day (Hannibal et al., 1997), whereas light alters phase only in the subjective night. In this study we show that PACAP can reset …
