The Rest Of The Story: A Reflection On Extracurriculars During Intern Teaching, Barnaby Pung Aug 1999

The Rest Of The Story: A Reflection On Extracurriculars During Intern Teaching, Barnaby Pung

Honors Theses

I decided to title my thesis The Rest of the Story, because of the radio personality Paul Harvey. His radio show "The Rest of the Story" is a commentary that reflects on many current issues as well as past occurrences and public personalities. In one of his most famous segments he will tell a story about a person's life and not reveal who the individual is until the end This tidbit of little known information is what the rest of the story actually is. It is the inside scoop, that little extra that is often difficult to find. That is …

Nutrient Balance On Nebraska Livestock Confinement Systems, Richard K. Koelsch, Gary Lesoing Aug 1999

Nutrient Balance On Nebraska Livestock Confinement Systems, Richard K. Koelsch, Gary Lesoing

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Managing the environmental risk associated with livestock production is a significant challenge. Nitrogen and phosphorus are commonly implicated as the sources of ground and surface water quality problems associated with livestock production. The degree of imbalance between these nutrient inputs and the managed nutrient outputs for a livestock operation defines the magnitude of potential environmental risk and provides insight as to the underlying causes of these challenges. A nitrogen and phosphorus balance was constructed for 33 Nebraska confinement livestock operations. Twenty-five and 17 of these operations experienced significant nitrogen and phosphorus imbalances, respectively (50% more nutrient inputs than outputs). Nutrient …

Method Of Protecting Against Neuron Loss, Philip W. Landfield Aug 1999

Method Of Protecting Against Neuron Loss, Philip W. Landfield

Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences Faculty Patents

The present invention pertains to a method of protecting against neuron loss in a subject by administering a compound that protects against neuron loss by acting through a vitamin D receptor. Some of these compounds may prevent or retard neuron loss by regulating intraneuronal and/or peripheral calcium and phosphate levels. Other compounds of the invention act through a vitamin D receptor to protect against neuron loss through mechanisms not involving calcium or phosphate regulation. A preferred compound is a biologically active form of vitamin D, a precursor, metabolite, or analog of vitamin D. A preferred form of vitamin D is …

The Changing Vista Of The Northern Northwest Coast Indian Deer Ritual, Kenneth Frank Austin Aug 1999

The Changing Vista Of The Northern Northwest Coast Indian Deer Ritual, Kenneth Frank Austin

Anthropology

From time immemorial until the start of the 20th century, when disputing Tlingits decided to end a conflict, Tlingit clan leaders and elders met in council and negotiated an equitable peace settlement. After reaching a satisfactory negotiation, a peace dance took place to validate the settlement. Besides the Tlingits, the neighboring Indian groups in Southeast Alaska and British Columbia practiced this custom. When the European and Western powers assumed governance, the deer ritual--a judicial function of the Pacific Northwest Coast Indians--was modified, and new forms appeared. Presently, while elders know their regional history, many do not remember the protocol and …

Plant Architecture And Forage Selection By Moose, Edward Joseph Mallek Aug 1999

Plant Architecture And Forage Selection By Moose, Edward Joseph Mallek

Biological Sciences

The effects of plant architecture on browse selection and the extent of use of Salix alaxensis and Salix plantifolia by moose foraging in winter in Interior Alaska were studied during 1997 and 1998. Three sampling techniques were employed to estimate forage availability and utilization. Sampling forage availability prior to use (in autumn) provided the best estimates of forage use in spring. In Salix plantifolia, selection of current annual growth (CAG) twigs was significantly related to basal diameter of CAG, diameter of nearest neighbor, distance to nearest neighbor, and number of leaders per cluster. In contrast, CAG selection in Salix alaxensis …

Univercity News (1999-08-16)

UniverCity News, 1998-2001

VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

Shadow Price Of Environmental Bads: Weak Vs. Strong Disposability, Saleem Shaik, Glenn A. Helmers Aug 1999

Shadow Price Of Environmental Bads: Weak Vs. Strong Disposability, Saleem Shaik, Glenn A. Helmers

Department of Agricultural Economics: Presentations, Working Papers, and Gray Literature

This paper addresses the issue of the shadow price of environmental bads treated as an undesirable output (normal input) with weak (strong) disposability in a two-stage estimation. Nebraska agriculture sector time series data is spread over 1936-94. Results indicate the difference in the price due to the disposability property.

The Role Of Non-Parametric Approach In Adjusting Productivity Measures For Environmental Impacts, Saleem Shaik, Richard K. Perrin

Department of Agricultural Economics: Presentations, Working Papers, and Gray Literature

This paper addresses the role of non-parametric analysis in adjusting agricultural productivity measures for environmental impacts. The modified Tornquist-Theil index computed using shadow prices derived from the programming procedures is compared and contrasted with a nonparametric hyperbolic Malmquist index for the case of Nebraska agriculture.

The Potential For Marketing Pork Products With Embedded Environmental Attributes: Results From An Experimental Study, Sean P. Hurley, James B. Kliebenstein Aug 1999

The Potential For Marketing Pork Products With Embedded Environmental Attributes: Results From An Experimental Study, Sean P. Hurley, James B. Kliebenstein

Agribusiness

Environmental issues such as air and water quality related to livestock production currently receive much attention. Potential methods for environmental improvement range from regulation to market solutions. This study looks at consumer willingness to pay for pork products with embedded environmental attributes. Experimental auctions showed that over one-half of the participants (62%) paid a premium, that did not vary significantly between differing regions of the United States. (JEL Codes Q13, Q25)

The Impacts Of Dairy Cattle Ownership On The Nutritional Status Of Preschool Children In Coastal Kenya, Charles F. Nicholson, Phillip K. Thornton Aug 1999

The Impacts Of Dairy Cattle Ownership On The Nutritional Status Of Preschool Children In Coastal Kenya, Charles F. Nicholson, Phillip K. Thornton

Agribusiness

In many parts of the developing world, the availability of sufficient food—food supplying sufficient daily energy and protein—remains a key challenge for many families, despite substantial increases in total food production in the past two decades. At present there is sufficient food produced to feed everyone in the world, but the available food is neither evenly distributed nor fully consumed. As a result, some 800 million people—200 million children— are food insecure, that is, they lack consistent access to the food required for a healthy and productive life (Pinstrup-Andersen, 1994). The roots of food insecurity and malnutrition are complex, but …

Impacts Of The Northeast Interstate Dairy Compact On New England Milk Supply, Charles F. Nicholson, Budy Resosudarmo, Rick Wackernagel Aug 1999

Impacts Of The Northeast Interstate Dairy Compact On New England Milk Supply, Charles F. Nicholson, Budy Resosudarmo, Rick Wackernagel

Agribusiness

During the first year of the Northeast Interstate Dairy Compact, milk production in the six New England states increased by about 57 million pounds, or about 1.3% of production compared to the 12 months prior to the Compact. Increases in milk production were largest in Connecticut (31 million pounds) and Vermont (21 million pounds), whereas Maine and New Hampshire experienced increases of less than 10 million pounds. Production in Massachusetts and Rhode Island declined by 9 million and 0.4 million pounds, respectively. Because the rate of increase for New England was larger than the US average, the Compact Commission incurred …
