Redox Regulation Of Cell Signaling By Selenocysteine In Mammalian Thioredoxin Reductases, Qi-An Sun, Yalin Wu, Francesca Zappacosta, Kuan-Teh Jeang, Byeong Jae Lee, Dolph L. Hatfield, Vadim N. Gladyshev Aug 1999

Redox Regulation Of Cell Signaling By Selenocysteine In Mammalian Thioredoxin Reductases, Qi-An Sun, Yalin Wu, Francesca Zappacosta, Kuan-Teh Jeang, Byeong Jae Lee, Dolph L. Hatfield, Vadim N. Gladyshev

Vadim Gladyshev Publications

The intracellular generation of reactive oxygen species, together with the thioredoxin and glutathione systems, is thought to participate in redox signaling in mammalian cells. The activity of thioredoxin is dependent on the redox status of thioredoxin reductase (TR), the activity of which in turn is dependent on a selenocysteine residue. Two mammalian TR isozymes (TR2 and TR3), in addition to that previously characterized (TR1), have now been identified in humans and mice. All three TR isozymes contain a selenocysteine residue that is located in the penultimate position at the carboxyl terminus and which is encoded by a UGA codon. The …

The Wallops Flight Facility Model For An Integrated Federal/Commercial Test Range, Bruce Underwood Aug 1999

The Wallops Flight Facility Model For An Integrated Federal/Commercial Test Range, Bruce Underwood

Small Satellite Conference

Historically, the U.S. federal government has been the predominant user of space within this country. In support of this need, it established a number of federal launch facilities to support govemment projects. Among these sites was NASA's Wallops Flight Facility. While Wallops' historical responsibilities have been principally in support of NASA science and technology missions, the emerging growth of commercial space is changing the fundamental philosophies of the roles of the government. The Virginia Commercial Space Flight Authority and NASA have formed a partnership that leverages the capabilities of the established NASNWallops Test Range with the resources offered by a …

Mars Micromissions, Steve Matousek, Kim Leschly, Bob Gershman, John Reimer Aug 1999

Mars Micromissions, Steve Matousek, Kim Leschly, Bob Gershman, John Reimer

Small Satellite Conference

A Mars micromission launches as an Ariane 5 secondary as early as November I, 2002. One possible mission is a Comm/nav micromission .orbiter. The other possible mission is a Mars airplane. Both missions are enabled by a lowcost, common micromisson bus design. The future of Mars micromissions has at least two micromissions per Mars Opportunity In cooperation with CNES. Other destinations besides Mars are possible by small changes and technology Infusion in the micromission system design detailed here. Micromissions enable a new class of science investigations and comm/nav orbiters due to low-cost, focused design.

Where Have All The Packing Plants Gone? The New Meat Geography In Rural America, Mark Drabenstott, Mark Henry, Kristin Mitchell Aug 1999

Where Have All The Packing Plants Gone? The New Meat Geography In Rural America, Mark Drabenstott, Mark Henry, Kristin Mitchell

Bureau of Business Research Publications

The meat industry is an economic powerhouse for rural America - accounting for roughly one of every 16 rural manufacturing jobs. Moreover, this rural powerhouse is adding jobs at a fast clip, with recent growth of 8.5 percent a year versus just 1.2 percent a year for all rural manufacturing industries. Finally, rural America has captured a commanding 52 percent of all meat industry jobs, far above the level of a decade ago.

While all these figures are welcome news to rural areas eager to expand employment, geographic shifts under way in the industry raise fresh doubts over which rural …

Phosphoinositide-Ap-2 Interactions Required For Targeting To Plasma Membrane Clathrin-Coated Pits., I Gaidarov, James H. Keen Aug 1999

Phosphoinositide-Ap-2 Interactions Required For Targeting To Plasma Membrane Clathrin-Coated Pits., I Gaidarov, James H. Keen

Department of Microbiology and Immunology Faculty Papers

The clathrin-associated AP-2 adaptor protein is a major polyphosphoinositide-binding protein in mammalian cells. A high affinity binding site has previously been localized to the NH(2)-terminal region of the AP-2 alpha subunit (Gaidarov et al. 1996. J. Biol. Chem. 271:20922-20929). Here we used deletion and site- directed mutagenesis to determine that alpha residues 21-80 comprise a discrete folding and inositide-binding domain. Further, positively charged residues located within this region are involved in binding, with a lysine triad at positions 55-57 particularly critical. Mutant peptides and protein in which these residues were changed to glutamine retained wild-type structural and functional characteristics by …

Insulin-Like Growth Factor Ii Signaling In Neoplastic Proliferation Is Blocked By Transgenic Expression Of The Metalloproteinase Inhibitor Timp-1, David C. Martin, John L. Fowlkes, Bojana Babic, Rama Khokha Aug 1999

Insulin-Like Growth Factor Ii Signaling In Neoplastic Proliferation Is Blocked By Transgenic Expression Of The Metalloproteinase Inhibitor Timp-1, David C. Martin, John L. Fowlkes, Bojana Babic, Rama Khokha

Pediatrics Faculty Publications

Insulin-like growth factor (IGF) II is overexpressed in many human cancers and is reactivated by, and crucial for viral oncogene (SV40 T antigen, [TAg])-induced tumorigenesis in several tumor models. Using a double transgenic murine hepatic tumor model, we demonstrate that tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase 1 (TIMP-1) blocks liver hyperplasia during tumor development, despite TAg-mediated reactivation of IGF-II. Because the activity of IGFs is controlled by IGF-binding proteins (IGFBPs), we investigated whether TIMP-1 overexpression altered the IGFBP status in the transgenic liver. Ligand blotting showed that IGFBP-3 protein levels were increased in TIMP-1-overexpressing double transgenic littermates, whereas IGFBP-3 mRNA levels were …
