The UCF Report
University hits 100,000-degree milestone: In just its 29th year awarding degrees, UCF has reached a mark that took other, much older universities far longer; Regents approve four new programs: The BOR also gave thumbs up for several other projects at its July meeting; Filmmaker starring in new role with UCF: The Sundance Film Festival co-founder is joining UCF this month to direct the Film and Animation department.

Cinderella's Social Transformations, Rosemary Lutz
Cinderella's Social Transformations, Rosemary Lutz
USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)
The tale of Cinderella has made its way around the world for centuries, yet this highly recognizable plot continues to be a popular contemporary theme: a young girl cast into suffering, treated maliciously, and subjected to privation eventually is summoned to a regal existence. We easily identify the Cinderella character even in the guise of a mermaid in the film Splash; as a factory worker, who lives in a dull and lifeless town which replaces Cinderella's traditional ashen hearth, in An Officer and a Gentleman; or as a prostitute whose trick turns out to be Prince Charming in Pretty Woman. …

Whether this is your first fantasy-related conference, or your fourth or your thirtieth-a thousand welcomes to you all. Whether you come here from elsewhere in the midwest, or the west coast, or strands afar remote--be assured that you are very welcome. Your conference committee has organized this little gathering, at bottom, for the fun of it not that the chores necessary to make it possible have always been fun, but such is our goal for the conference: intelligence and fun, scholarship and joy. We are delighted that you have come to contribute to this and to share in it.

Who Are You Class of...Orientation Speeches
“Once again, we express a sincere welcome to the class of 2002 - all 156 of you.”
“You have a serious commitment to public service. You gave thousands of hours to Women's Shelters, Habitat for Humanity, Special Olympics, Big Brothers-Big Sisters, working with the elderly in soup kitchens, shelters, and crisis hot lines. You've worked countless hours in hospices, with sexual assault victims, recording for the Blind and Dyslexic, tutoring, in a state mental hospital for children, battered women's shelters, as well as for many other worthy causes you've demonstrated the art of "giving back." One student helped raise more …
Cavefish Population Status And Environmental Quality In Cave Springs Cave, Arkansas - Final Report Submitted To Arkansas Natural Heritage Commission, G. O. Graening, Arthur V. Brown
Cavefish Population Status And Environmental Quality In Cave Springs Cave, Arkansas - Final Report Submitted To Arkansas Natural Heritage Commission, G. O. Graening, Arthur V. Brown
Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports
This report summarizes the continuing effort to monitor environmental quality in the Cave Springs Cave Natural Area and to implement the Ozark Cavefish Recovery Plan. Last year’s report (Brown et al., 1998) identified certain environmental stressors, including a trend over 15 years of increasing nutrient pollution, a low cavefish population count of only 106, and the presence of heavy metals in the cave water and one semi-volatile organic compound (the phthalate DEHP at 500 ppb) in resident crayfish tissue. This year’s monitoring effort demonstrates that fecal coliforms continue to exceed Arkansas State Water Quality Standards (Regulation 2), sometimes by a …

Conservation Implications Of Dietary Dilution From Debris Ingestion: Sublethal Effects In Post-Hatchling Loggerhead Sea Turtles, Shannon J. Mccauley, Karen A. Bjomdal
Conservation Implications Of Dietary Dilution From Debris Ingestion: Sublethal Effects In Post-Hatchling Loggerhead Sea Turtles, Shannon J. Mccauley, Karen A. Bjomdal
Biological Sciences
Ingestion of anthropogenic debris by marine species has been documented extensively; fewer studies have attempted to quantify the sublethal effects caused by debris ingestion. One potential sublethal effect is reduced nutrient gains from diets diluted by consumption of debris. Post-hatchling and juvenile loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) consume substantial quantities of debris. We evaluated the effects of dietary dilution on voluntary intake in post-hatchling loggerheads to assess their ability to compensate for the presence of inert diluents in their diet by increasing dry mass intakes to maintain nutrient gains. Mean daily intakes of dry mass did not increase …
Patentspeak: A New Logoputian Lingo, Michael Keith
Patentspeak: A New Logoputian Lingo, Michael Keith
Word Ways
In the language Patentspeak (more precisely, its American dialect), every sentence or phrase is required to be the title of a patent issued by the United States Patent and Trademark Office. The number of issued U.S. patents is nearing the six million mark; nonetheless, Patentspeak is still a highly constrained language, due to the range of vocabulary available and the fact that patent titles are usually long phrases, not isolated words.
Comparison Of An Advanced Mercury Analyzer With The Cold Vapor Atomic Absorption Technique For The Determination Of Mercury In Coal, Dong Li
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
For over 30 years the industry standard method for mercury analysis has been the cold vapor atomic absorption spectrometric technique (CVAAS). Recent developments in improving this technique have focused on procedures for concentrating mercury in the analyte or materials to improve detection. The LECO Corporation produces an Advanced Mercury Analyzer, the AMA-254, for analysis of the solid and liquid samples. The system allows for the thermal heating of the sample to decompose the sample and release mercury, which is concentrated in a gold amalgam. Thermal desorption of the mercury from the amalgam is detected by atomic absorption spectroscopy. A comparison …
Attitudes Concerning Euthanasia Among Protestant Denominations, Greg Morgan
Attitudes Concerning Euthanasia Among Protestant Denominations, Greg Morgan
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The purpose of this research was to uncover differences in attitudes among Protestant denominations concerning euthanasia. Variations in attitudes were viewed using social theories of religion by Emile Dukheim, Max Weber, Charles Glock, and Rodney Stark. These theories were used to establish a basis for variation among the Protestant denominations on social issues. A questionnaire was given to four Protestant Churches in a mid-sized city in Kentucky during the Spring of 1999. The sample of 134 respondents represented six different Protestant denominations. Logistic regression and factor analysis were used to analyze the data. Results suggest that pro-euthanasia attitudes are positively …
Identification Of Needs In Treatment Of Breast Cancer, Luann Massey
Identification Of Needs In Treatment Of Breast Cancer, Luann Massey
MSN Research Projects
Breast cancer has been documented as the second leading cause of death in American women. Many needs are realized during the phases of treatment for breast cancer: at the time of diagnosis, during treatment, and after treatment. The purpose of this descriptive exploratory study was to identify the needs of women with breast cancer during phases of treatment. With the Neuman Systems Model as a theoretical framework, the research question was as follows : What are the needs of women with breast cancer during the phases of treatment? Data were obtained using the Massey Subject Profile and the Massey Questionnaire. …
