Lymphotropic Virions Affect Chemokine Receptor-Mediated Neural Signaling And Apoptosis: Implications For Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1-Associated Dementia, Jialin Zheng, Anuja Ghorpade, Douglas Niemann, Robin L. Cotter, Michael R. Thylin, Leon Epstein, Jennifer Swartz, Robin B. Shepard, Xiaojuan Liu, Adeline Nukuna, Howard E. Gendelman

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

Chemokine receptors pivotal for human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection in lymphocytes and macrophages (CCR3, CCR5, and CXCR4) are expressed on neural cells (microglia, astrocytes, and/or neurons). It is these cells which are damaged during progressive HIV-1 infection of the central nervous system. We theorize that viral coreceptors could effect neural cell damage during HIV-1-associated dementia (HAD) without simultaneously affecting viral replication. To these ends, we studied the ability of diverse viral strains to affect intracellular signaling and apoptosis of neurons, astrocytes, and monocyte-derived macrophages. Inhibition of cyclic AMP, activation of inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate, and apoptosis were induced by diverse …

Cross-Transmission Studies With Eimeria Arizonensis, E. Arizonensis-Like Oocysts And Eimeria Langebarteli: Host Specificity At The Genus And Species Level Within The Muridae, John A. Hnida, Donald Duszynski Oct 1999

Cross-Transmission Studies With Eimeria Arizonensis, E. Arizonensis-Like Oocysts And Eimeria Langebarteli: Host Specificity At The Genus And Species Level Within The Muridae, John A. Hnida, Donald Duszynski

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Cross-transmission experiments were done using sporulated oocysts of Eimeria arizonensis from Peromyscus truei and Peromyscus maniculatus, and oocysts of 2 putative species that resemble E. arizonensis, i.e., Eimeria albigulae from Neotoma albigula, and Eimeria onychomysis from Onychomys leucogaster. Oocysts of each species were inoculated into representatives of P. maniculatus and the latter 2 rodent species. Other experiments were conducted wherein oocysts of Eimeria langebarteli from Peromyscus leucopus were given to P. truei and P. maniculatus. Oocysts of E. arizonensis from P. truei and P. maniculatus could be transmitted only to P. maniculatus; likewise, …

Pierre Coste And Catherine Labouré: The Conflict Of Historical Criticism And Popular Devotion, Stafford Poole C.M. Oct 1999

Pierre Coste And Catherine Labouré: The Conflict Of Historical Criticism And Popular Devotion, Stafford Poole C.M.

Vincentian Studies

Pierre Coste’s analysis of Catherine Labouré and her visions serves as a case study in “the tension that can exist between the demands of a dispassionate historical criticism and those of popular devotion.” He did not believe in the visions and tried to prevent Catherine’s beatification. Publication of his research would not have been permitted, so he held one view publicly and another privately. Stafford Poole’s study uses two versions of Coste’s treatise, giving the publications and testimonies of the visions in chronological order and following each with Coste’s criticism. Among other things, he was troubled by the fact that …

Vincent In Translation, Marie Poole D.C. Oct 1999

Vincent In Translation, Marie Poole D.C.

Vincentian Studies

The Vincent Translation Project began in 1973 with the goal of producing “a modern American English edition of the extant works” of Vincent de Paul. Marie Poole explains the way the project is conducted, its challenges, and its contributions to scholarship. It is particularly through Vincent’s correspondence that we understand who he was as a person. Poole describes his time and his personality, especially as the latter was impacted by his Gascon heritage. She also specifies his relevance for many types of people today.

Stakeholder Satisfaction With A 4-H Extension Program For Five- To Eight-Year-Old Children, Scott D. Scheer, Kenneth R. Lafontaine Oct 1999

Stakeholder Satisfaction With A 4-H Extension Program For Five- To Eight-Year-Old Children, Scott D. Scheer, Kenneth R. Lafontaine

Journal of Extension

Stakeholder evaluations are essential for modifying or adjusting a program to ensure it is meeting its goals. A sample of 277 parents, 144 volunteers, and 44 agents/program assistants were surveyed to determine the perceived value and acceptance level of Ohio's 4-H K-2 program and its curriculum. The results were clear. The stakeholders of Ohio's 4-H program believe it is beneficial and effective for improving life skills for five- to eight-year-old children. Other states could benefit from using stakeholder evaluations to determine the immediate concerns of the people directly involved in the success or failure of a program.

What It Means To Be Created In The Image Of God, Chris Mueller Oct 1999

What It Means To Be Created In The Image Of God, Chris Mueller

Senior Honors Theses

The purpose of this study is to understand what it means to be created in the image of God. In order to do this, both the form and function of the image of God in humankind are considered. Gen. 1 :26-27 is the primary text, but is always understood in the greater context of Gen. 1-3, as well as the references to image and likeness in 5:1-3 and 9:6. Atomizing the form of the image of God into a particular human characteristic or attribute is proven to be insufficient, while identifying the function of the image of God as human …

Evolutionary Patterns Of Morphometrics, Allozymes And Mitochondrial Dna In Thrashers (Genus Toxostoma), Robert M. Zink, Donna L. Dittmann, John Klicka, Rachelle C. Blackwell-Rago Oct 1999

Evolutionary Patterns Of Morphometrics, Allozymes And Mitochondrial Dna In Thrashers (Genus Toxostoma), Robert M. Zink, Donna L. Dittmann, John Klicka, Rachelle C. Blackwell-Rago

Ornithology Program (HRC)

We examined patterns of variation in skeletal morphometrics (29 characters), allozymes (34 loci), mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) restriction sites (n = 74) and fragments (n = 395), and mtDNA sequences (1,739 bp from cytochrome b, ND2, ND6, and the control region) among all species of Toxostoma. The phenetic pattern of variation in skeletal morphometrics generally matched traditional taxonomic groupings (based on plumage patterns) with the exceptions of T. redivivum, which because of its large size clusters outside of its proper evolutionary group (lecontei), and T. occelatum, which did not cluster with T. curvirostre. Skull characters contributed highly to species discrimination, suggesting …

Collaborative Problem Solving: Financial Education For Youth, Judy Mckenna, Jan Carroll Oct 1999

Collaborative Problem Solving: Financial Education For Youth, Judy Mckenna, Jan Carroll

Journal of Extension

Financial literacy is a highly promoted objective - one that takes many partners to address effectively. Colorado State University Cooperative Extension family economics specialists initiated a statewide collaborative effort to develop new ways to link financial education for youth to educators. An Economic Education Expo was planned which attracted more than 100 educators and 40 inner city, ethnically diverse young people. Adults attended workshops ranging from economic standards to personal finance. The young people shared a wide range of entrepreneurship experiences and expertise. A collaboration wall exercise after lunch gave participants an opportunity to write mini proposals for small grants. …

Marketing And The Tragedy Of The Commons: A Synthesis, Commentary, And Analysis For Action, Clifford J. Shultz, Morris B. Holbrook

School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works

The authors contend that solutions to the most pressing environmental challenges will result from understanding and solving social traps such as the commons dilemma. They propose a synthesis for analysis and action to suggest that marketing's stakeholders can cooperate to contribute solutions and ultimately develop programs that help ameliorate the tragedy of the commons.

Making Our Nonpoint Source Pollution Education Programs Effective, Robin Shepard Oct 1999

Making Our Nonpoint Source Pollution Education Programs Effective, Robin Shepard

Journal of Extension

Educational programming is a common part of most watershed protection projects, but education strategies vary greatly from project to project, and from educator to educator. The amount of information and the way it is delivered also varies. Educational programming provides information to landowners in order to encourage environmentally beneficial action, such as the installation of best management practices. Education strategies, especially those that seek to reduce nonpoint source pollution from agriculture, generally rely on a combination to two approaches. The first uses diffuse communication campaign methods to disseminate information, somewhat randomly, over a wide area. The second comprises one-on-one information …

A Phenomenological Inquiry Into The Nature Of The Sacred, Ana Maria Janssen Oct 1999

A Phenomenological Inquiry Into The Nature Of The Sacred, Ana Maria Janssen

Institute for the Humanities Theses

There is good reason to believe that sacred experience is available to all humans. Yet the question of the sacred is frequently reduced to a debate between believers of various religions. As the focus of contention narrows, the ubiquity of sacred experience is neglected. Keeping this in mind, this analysis of the sacred confines itself strictly to the phenomenon of the sacred as a human experience, without confirming or denying the existence of a god or the veracity of any system of belief. Heidegger's Phenomenology is a useful model for such an analysis precisely because it lays aside conjecture about …

Beyond This Point There Be Dragons, Temple D. West Oct 1999

Beyond This Point There Be Dragons, Temple D. West

English Theses & Dissertations

Through profiles of six contemporary female authors that focus on their creative lives, as well as my personal journey toward rediscovering my creative voice, this nonfiction work explores the myths and legacies surrounding female creativity, especially as it relates to women writers today. It is an anatomy of stories about women who dare enter that territory of dragons beyond the known world, the territory where treasure is found.
