The international community has been more hesitant in accounting for the environmental consequences of war. All that the international community has been able to negotiate is scattered collateral references in a variety of treaties and conventions. One immediate task will be to consolidate these references into a single document or treaty. This Comment addresses the intersection of gender issues and human rights law as illustrated by the formation of the permanent ICC. Specifically, it argues that the inclusion of gender- motivated crimes in the ICC's definition of crimes against humanity was necessary to emphasize women's wartime experiences and injuries, but that such inclusion is not enough to ensure gender justice as the ICC begins to prosecute war crimes and crimes against humanity. This dissertation describes the results of two projects that demonstrate the power of band ratioing of remote sensing data. The first method, Band Ratio Differencing (BRD), challenges the more traditional techniques for detecting environmental disturbance of the surface in and terrains. These traditional techniques are inadequate because they cannot identify the nature of the change (physical, chemical, biological) or the processes (natural, anthropogenic) involved in causing the change. In contrast, BRD of Landsat TM data has the advantage of providing information about changes in the composition of alluvial surfaces. While critics have much analyzed the idea of time, they have left largely unchronicled an important Renaissance conception. Time the destroyer or devourer and time the creator or revealer of truth are familiar early modern tropes. But the inversion of this power structure--humanity not controlled by but controlling time--was equally pervasive. Especially apparent are inversions in which time is acted upon as an instrument objectified for use and abuse. Marlowe, Shakespeare, Jonson, and Donne all explore this notion of time as controllable instrument, alternately condemning or glorifying time's debasement, enfeeblement, subjugation, and manipulation. An improved technique for incorporating saturation into the q-d axis model (Park''s model) of a synchronous machine is proposed. By choosing magnetizing flux linkage as a state variable, iterative procedures required by traditional methods are avoided. The saturation function is represented by an arctangent function which has some distinct advantages over polynomial representations and look-up tables. In particular, the parameters of the proposed function all have physical significance and the proposed function is defined over an infinite range of flux linkage. The model is verified for steady-state and transient conditions using a laboratory synchronous machine-rectifier system similar to those commonly …

A Euler code is used to predict the flow field over a hypersonic missile and to determine the carryover factors KW(B), fin lift in the presence of the body, and KB(W), lift produced by the body in the presence of the fins. The missile is assumed to have cruciform, delta fins in the + orientation and an aspect ratio of 1.529. Results are presented as a function of fin span at Mach 6, 8, and 10, for a 2-deg angle of attack. Two ratios of specific heats, 1.4 and 1.3, are considered to partially account for vibrational excitation effects. Both …

After Perestroika ushered in new opportunities for public evangelism in Russia, local and foreign evangelists have been baptizing thousands of new converts every year. The rapid growth resulting from these crusades has brought about new challenges. This study analyzes some of the challenges associated with public evangelism in Russia and suggests a strategy to improve the longterm results of these campaigns.

Method

Problem

A new view of the atonement threatened to divide some local congregations of Seventh-day Adventists. Referred to in this study as the "trust-healing model" of atonement, the new paradigm proposed by A. Graham Maxwell was developed from a wide reading of Scripture and claimed additional support from the "great controversy" motif in the writings of Ellen G. White. However, because it seemed to call in question certain aspects of the long-accepted substitutionary model of the atonement, the new paradigm became a point of conflict.

Neither sovereignty nor property rights could forestall American geopolitical expansion in the first half of the nineteenth century. The conflicts that resulted from this clash of doctrine with desire are perhaps most evident in the history of the Chicanas/Chicanos of Texas, California, and the Southwest, who sought to maintain their land and property, as guaranteed by the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, in the aftermath of the U.S.- Mexico War.
