Where Were Women?: Women In The United States Intelligence Organizations From The Office Of Strategic Services To The Central Intelligence Agency, Madison Harris
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
United States intelligence historians have largely neglected the importance of women’s intelligence labor as well as the centralized intelligence organizations that existed from World War II to the early years of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) – including the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), Strategic Service Unit (SSU), and Central Intelligence Group (CIG). While assumptions about women in intelligence work during this period are usually drawn from stereotypical portrayals in popular media, such as books and movies, this thesis utilized statistical data and other agency sources to build a broader understanding of women’s actual labor.
This thesis demonstrates that women …
Nation-Building On Pillars Of Fascism: How Italian Fascist Ideals Have Remained Alive In Eritrean Identity Through The Asmaran Urban Landscape, Caspian Green
Young Historians Conference
Roughly a third of Eritrea’s time as an Italian colony was spent under fascist rule, during which the Italian colonists dramatically changed the Asmaran urban environment, as well as its relationship with the rest of the Eritrean colony, to reflect fascist principles. After the fall of the Italian colonial empire, Eritrean political leaders sought to use the physical landscape to justify their claims to sovereignty, reapplying those pre-existing fascist principles to Eritrean nationalism. By examining Italian-Asmaran buildings, roads, and legal structures in their contexts, common threads between past fascist beliefs and the modern Eritrean military state emerge, offering a better …
Revolutionary Resistance In Denmark: The Impact Of Grundtvigism On The Danish Resistance To Nazi Occupation, Holland Burd
Revolutionary Resistance In Denmark: The Impact Of Grundtvigism On The Danish Resistance To Nazi Occupation, Holland Burd
Young Historians Conference
This paper examines the impact of nineteenth century philosopher and theologian Nikolaj Frederik Severin Grundtvig on the Danish resistance during World War II. Born in 1783, Grundtvig established a framework that paved the way for Danish national pride, setting the stage for a united resistance effort against Nazi occupation in October of 1943. His beliefs inspired movement towards the common good and allowed the Danes to reconnect with their cultural identity. Nazi Germany invaded Denmark in 1940, initially preserving an image of peace through a model protectorate. However, the image of peace was destroyed in 1943 after Nazi Germany ordered …
Heavenly Righteousness: How Religion Facilitated The Rise Of The Order Of The Knights Templar, Morgan M. Henderson
Heavenly Righteousness: How Religion Facilitated The Rise Of The Order Of The Knights Templar, Morgan M. Henderson
Young Historians Conference
The Order of the Knights of the Temple of Solomon, commonly known as the Knights Templar, was a critical organization in the Christian occupation of the Holy Land during the 11th to 14th centuries. This paper explores how the Templars’ relationship with the papacy and the Catholic Church enabled the order to amass its power. Through its doctrine, papal grants, and founding council, the Templars structured their order to be a military force used to attack the Muslim infidel. Religion was the unique element that enabled the Knights Templar to become the most significant military order of their time, greatly …
A Battle Of Will And Wisdom: Polar Opposites In The Polar Extremes Of The Viking World, Lily C. Manne
A Battle Of Will And Wisdom: Polar Opposites In The Polar Extremes Of The Viking World, Lily C. Manne
Young Historians Conference
This paper explores the connection between the polar climate of Viking-age Scandinavia and the success of the Vikings through examining the dual nature of their culture brought about by their environment. The Scandinavian peninsula is known for its harsh, variable climate full of cold winters and unpredictable harvests that turned into long summers and melting fjords. Outside of shaping survival strategies and material culture, this polar environment seeped into the fundamental cultural values the Vikings exhibited, creating the foundation for a society that understood the value of destruction and violence as well as creation and craftsmanship. Using Norse mythology as …

Rdm Interval Arithmetic Based Weapon System Evaluation, Konul Imran Jabbarova Phd
Chemical Technology, Control and Management
For solving this issue, the paper considers a hierarchical multi-criteria decision-making problem, where the choice of a company that corresponds best to the criteria is required. Data used in this problem are presented in the form of intervals, which makes it possible to cope with uncertainty in the problem solution. Several companies working in missile production industry are chosen as alternatives for analysis. Evaluation of the selected alternatives is made based on five criteria clusters. More than twenty criteria are taken into account during evaluation.
Solving this problem is achieved with the help of the technique based on computation of …
From Dissent To Terrorism: The Formation Of A Security Grammar In Malaysia, Haezreena Begum Binti Abdul Hamid Dr
From Dissent To Terrorism: The Formation Of A Security Grammar In Malaysia, Haezreena Begum Binti Abdul Hamid Dr
Indonesia Law Review
The absence of a universally accepted definition of terrorism has enabled states to exercise wide discretion in naming, governing, and exceptionalising violence. This article argues that, in Malaysia, “terrorism” did not emerge as a neutral legal category but as the product of a historically evolving security grammar, a patterned way of interpreting ideology, dissent, and conflict through the lens of existential threat. Employing a qualitative doctrinal socio-legal methodology, the study integrates analysis of international and Malaysian legal frameworks with case-based examination of key episodes, including Memali, Al-Arqam, Al-Ma’unah, Lahad Datu, and ISIS-linked incidents. Statutes, judicial decisions, policy materials, and regional …
Rex Gothorum, Patres Conscripti, Et Senes Barbarorum: Balancing Monarchical And Aristocratic Power In The Ostrogothic Kingdom, Max Deloach
Honors Theses
The fourth and fifth-century migrations of “barbarian” peoples from beyond the Roman frontier to the heart of the Empire exacerbated an already unparalleled crisis of self in Roman society. With the settlement of these “barbarians” in the West, the facade of Roman dominion over its own territory and institutions had crumbled. In Italy, the Roman Senate, along with the Catholic Church and the Eastern Roman Emperor, became essential to the peninsula’s “barbarian” kings. At the same time, post-Roman monarchs were obliged to patronize their own nobility—the elite military class. This work evaluates the trilateral negotiation of power between post-Roman monarchs, …
Human Dignity In The Foundational Political Documents Of The United States, Kalista Roades
Human Dignity In The Foundational Political Documents Of The United States, Kalista Roades
Honors Theses
Human dignity is integral to modern discussions of human rights and liberties, but this connection can be found stretching back through history to the early developments of human rights. This paper begins with modern philosophical definitions of human dignity, especially from Rosen and Kateb. Rosen discusses four “strands” of dignity- Intrinsic Dignity, Status Dignity, Manner Dignity, and Respect Dignity. This paper then uses that framework to find human dignity implicit within the founding documents of the United States including the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights, as well as “Common Sense” and the Magna Carta to …

This study examines the representation of the humanitarian crisis and popular resistance in the poetry of Sudanese demonstrators, drawing on the documentary film Sudan, Remember Us (2024) by Hind Meddeb. Using Norman Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), the study analyzes data that have been recontextualized through social media. The results show the use of dehumanizing lexicon (lāji'an, mumazzaqan) and hyperbolic metaphors to depict the suffering of the Sudanese people. The poetry employs intertextuality with the story of the Prophet Job to morally legitimize the victims, and is distributed through social media platforms. At the macro level, this poetry functions as …
Therapists’ Perspectives On Female Patients’ Recovery From Sexual Violent Trauma Committed By Familiar Offenders, Lauren S. Doran
Therapists’ Perspectives On Female Patients’ Recovery From Sexual Violent Trauma Committed By Familiar Offenders, Lauren S. Doran
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
A mental health therapist is a licensed professional who is trained to identify any barriers or regression during the recovery process with their female patients’ psychological experiences from sexual violent trauma (SVT) perpetrated by a degree of familiar offenders. In this study, the therapists’ perceptions identified the impact of the SVT committed by a familiar offender toward the female victim’s recovery process. The theoretical foundation included betrayal trauma theory, moral injury, and victimology. The research question addressed how therapists described the psychological recovery of female patients who experienced sexual violence by a familiar offender. The research design was data collection …
Exploring Gender As An Analytical Framework In The 2018-2019 Revolution And Ongoing Civil War: The Role Of Gendered Violence And Sudanese Women's Resistance, Ami John
Butler Journal of Undergraduate Research
This paper will interrogate the intersection of gender, war, and political upheaval within Sudan while focusing on the role of women in both the 2019 resistance and the ongoing conflict and revolution. By the end of 2018, mass protests had called for the ousting of Omar al-Bashir, the long-standing Sudanese president. This event set off a chain reaction which led to events that fueled the long-standing rivalry between the two militant groups that were active in Sudan, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF). The tension caused by this rivalry created unforeseen circumstances for the local …
Can Counterterrorism Be Taken Too Far?, Charles Tracy
Can Counterterrorism Be Taken Too Far?, Charles Tracy
The Political Realm: Journal of Undergraduate Research in Political Science and International Relations
The article evaluates three major counterterrorism tools—surveillance, torture, and drone warfare—through the lens of Just War Theory, arguing that each raises distinct ethical and strategic dilemmas. It concludes that surveillance can be morally permissible when tightly regulated, torture is indefensible both legally and morally, and drone strikes are conditionally ethical only under strict oversight that minimizes civilian harm and ensures accountability. Overall, the paper contends that effective counterterrorism is possible without abandoning human rights, but only when transparency, proportionality, and legal constraints guide state action.
Stratified Deception-Inference Architecture (Sdia) - A Multi-Layer Adversarial Intelligence Framework For Log Semantics, Intent Inference, And Deception-Aware Observability Systems, Johny Manuel-Devadoss
Stratified Deception-Inference Architecture (Sdia) - A Multi-Layer Adversarial Intelligence Framework For Log Semantics, Intent Inference, And Deception-Aware Observability Systems, Johny Manuel-Devadoss
Defensive Publications Series
Modern observability systems treat logs, traces, and metrics as noisy data sources requiring denoising, aggregation, and statistical anomaly detection. However, this assumption breaks down in adversarial, highly distributed, or rapidly evolving systems where signals may be incomplete, obfuscated, or implicitly deceptive due to system complexity, emergent behaviors, or malicious interference.I propose the Stratified Deception-Inference Architecture (SDIA), a hierarchical cognitive framework that reinterprets observability data as an adversarial communication system rather than a passive telemetry stream. Inspired by strategic deception paradigms from classical warfare, SDIA introduces a multi-layer architecture that explicitly models noise, semantic drift, and hidden intent as first-class computational …

Automatic Modulation Classification On Satellite Communications Across Orbital Domains, Lorraine (Raina) Freeman
Automatic Modulation Classification On Satellite Communications Across Orbital Domains, Lorraine (Raina) Freeman
Theses
In recent years, the space domain has exploded with both commercial and government activity, making situational awareness critically important. In this work, we highlight the need for signal intelligence capabilities that can transfer gracefully from terrestrial systems to space networks. This already difficult task is additionally complicated by the fact that satellites operate at multiple different orbits. Geostationary (GEO) satellites face significantly different channel conditions than their Low Earth Orbit (LEO) counterparts, meaning that any cross-orbital signal analysis tool must be able to handle widely varying conditions. Such tools may soon be critical for identifying satellites and detecting malicious cyber …
Automated, Modular, Agentless Adversarial Emulation In Cloud Environments For Higher Education And Student Training, Doc Harley
Senior Honors Theses
Currently, the leading technologies in the market of adversarial emulation are MITRE Caldera, Atomic Red Team by IBM, and multiple proprietary products that come with support packages for different vendors like AttackIQ, Cymulate, SafeBreach, and many more. While it is clear that much work has been done in the broad category of adversarial emulation, when it comes to open source solutions, there are no agentless options with built in automation and modularity that have good support for cloud environments. Agentless adversarial emulation provides a unique advantage in that it can be both simpler and a better representation of the true …
Echoes Of Deception: The Historical Impact Of Propaganda And Disinformation On Public Opinion, Justina Zgaljardic
Echoes Of Deception: The Historical Impact Of Propaganda And Disinformation On Public Opinion, Justina Zgaljardic
Honors Theses
This study reconceptualizes propaganda not as a collection of regime-specific messaging practices, but as a structured and adaptive system of perception management operating across political and ideological boundaries. Addressing fragmentation within existing scholarship, it examines how propaganda constructs legitimacy, organizes interpretation, and aligns individual cognition with state objects through recurring narrative strategies and disinformation mechanisms. Using a qualitative framework, the analysis draws on primary materials from four wartime cases: the Stalinist Soviet Union, Nazi Germany, the United States during World War II, and wartime Britain. The findings demonstrate that, despite variation in political systems, propaganda consistently operates through three interrelated …

The Flaming Cross Of Kildare: A Model Of Gender And Power In Early Irish Christian Identity, 470-1220 A.D., Patricia M. Hendrick
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This dissertation examines the development of early Irish Christianity through the lens of gender, monasticism, and cultural synthesis, centering on the figure of Saint Brigid of Kildare and her foundational role in shaping one of Ireland’s most influential religious institutions. It argues that the Christianization of Ireland was neither abrupt nor uniform, but rather a gradual, negotiated process that fused indigenous Gaelic traditions with emerging Christian structures. Within this unique context, Ireland’s ecclesiastical organization diverged markedly from continental models, privileging monastic networks over episcopal hierarchies and enabling alternative configurations of spiritual authority. Importantly, this is seen in Kildare Abbey, a …

A Phenomenological Study: Exploring The Lived Experiences Of Veterans During Their Separation Transition, Nereida Valentine
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this phenomenological study was to understand the phenomenon of the lived experiences of U.S. veterans’ during their transition into civilian life across all military branches. The theory guiding this study was Schlossberg’s 4S theory on adult transitions, this theory identifies what factors influence how veterans adapt to their transition into civilian life. Data analysis was led from this central research question: “What are the lived experiences of veterans’ and their academic readiness during their transition into civilian life?” The methodology used was transcendental phenomenological approach to understand the lived experiences of 12 participants and how they adapt …
Evaluating Inner-Tainment With A Ghetto Perspective For Positive Thought Adjustment In Ghetto Communities, Shontae L. Graham
Evaluating Inner-Tainment With A Ghetto Perspective For Positive Thought Adjustment In Ghetto Communities, Shontae L. Graham
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Environmental challenges and disadvantages impact cognitive scripts and develop persistent frustration. Frustration is both mental and physical and can be negative or positive. It evokes emotion, which is prompted by memory and its associated level of importance. The integration of emotion, memory, and imagination can set the stage and create an act to transition negative frustration and align past experiences with new perspectives. This study used a qualitative Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis approach to investigate the use of self-scripted enactment as a self-help technique for positive thought adjustment. The technique is called Inner-tainment and was used to determine if there were …

Threats To Cleared Industry, Think Tanks, And Academia From Malign Nations Focusing On Federally Funded Research And Development Centers, James E. Equels
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The world of academia, think tanks, and Federally Funded Research and Development Centers (FFRDCs) in the United States face increasing vulnerabilities to foreign intelligence exploitation, particularly by China and Russia. Espionage, cyber intrusions, insider threats, and intellectual property theft enable adversarial nations to leverage academic collaboration to access sensitive research. These threats are executed through foreign-sponsored partnerships, talent recruitment programs like China’s Thousand Talents Program, and infiltration via Confucius Institutes and other state-affiliated initiatives. Academic openness is routinely exploited to gain strategic military and technological innovation advantages. Operations by malign nations compromise federally funded research, while insider threats - both …
Protecting Computer Systems In The Post-Quantum World, Thomas C. Gerlach
Protecting Computer Systems In The Post-Quantum World, Thomas C. Gerlach
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The 20th century saw remarkable growth due to technological advances, with many of the most significant advances due in no small part to the transistor and the computer revolution it spawned. During the last several decades, an even more transformative technology has been making incredible advances: quantum computing. Quantum computers will significantly impact computer security, with a profound risk to encryption and privacy. However, because of the incredibly complicated nature of quantum computing and the variety of fields involved, quantum computing continues to be viewed as science fiction by many and is failing to garner enough attention within the computer …

Rosenzweig's Elements And Universal History, Martin Zwick
Rosenzweig's Elements And Universal History, Martin Zwick
Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations
This paper uses Rosenzweig’s conception of the three elements of God, World, and Human from The Star of Redemption in a model of universal history. The model also has some relation to Rosenzweig’s geopolitical essay, Globus, which is very different from the meta-historical Star. Based on a systems-theoretic schema of events and processes, the model views human history in terms of three linked processes: a primary process labeled “World” – the origin and development of human society embedded in nature, a secondary process labeled “God” – the origin and development of the Axial religions and philosophies, and a …
The Use Of Cognitive Biases In Russian Cyber Operations, Emma Manning
The Use Of Cognitive Biases In Russian Cyber Operations, Emma Manning
Honors Theses
This thesis examines how Russia has employed reflexive control through cyber operations to influence decision-making in foreign states, focusing on disinformation campaigns during the 2014 annexation of Crimea and the 2016 U.S. presidential election. Reflexive control, a concept rooted in Russian military doctrine, seeks to shape an adversary's perceptions and decision-making by providing carefully crafted information that leads targets to make choices favorable to the initiator. This research argues that while the fundamental objectives of reflexive control have remained consistent, technological advances have significantly expanded Russia's ability to conduct operations in developing cyber domains.

Regional And Temporal Variation In The Function Of The Castles Of The Norman Conquest, Leah A. Perdue
Regional And Temporal Variation In The Function Of The Castles Of The Norman Conquest, Leah A. Perdue
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
Following the Norman Conquest in 1066, a castle-building project of unprecedented scale transformed the landscape of England. This paper investigates how these structures supported the establishment of Norman rule over England, and how their role changed over time. Through examining case studies, the paper concludes that in the early years following the Conquest castles were primarily used in military operations, but in the following decades became essential administrative sites and seats of local government, as well as symbols of Norman power. The paper also concludes that castles on the border with Wales have a more complicated history, fluctuating in function …
Exploring Health Policy As A Critical Mechanism Of Expression Of Right-Wing Government Policy, Aleisha Martinez Sandoval
Exploring Health Policy As A Critical Mechanism Of Expression Of Right-Wing Government Policy, Aleisha Martinez Sandoval
Bates College Journal of Political Studies
Global health policy has long been viewed as a “softer” arena of politics, driven by cooperation rather than competition. Unlike economics or defense, nations in this sphere have often set aside ideological differences to improve human well-being. Yet right-wing governments (RWGs) are increasingly redefining this space, transforming it from an international project of solidarity into a strategic platform for advancing core ideological commitments. In this thesis, I examine how healthcare has become a critical site where the foundational tenets of RWGs—hierarchy, tradition, market liberalism, sovereignty, law and order, and populist nativism—are vividly enacted and reinforced. What was once a domain …
