Not long after Germans began the historic task of dismantling the Berlin Wall in 1989, their country was again reunited after forty-five years of division. For the second time in less than a century, a majority of Europe’s Germans were brought together under the banner of a single political sovereignty. As the enlarged Federal Republic psychologically reorients and physically reconstructs itself, the event is likely to have continued European and worldwide implications. Understanding the new Germany’s internal development and its evolving self-perceptions is to conceive of the country’s role now and in the years ahead; central to understanding Germany today …

The problem of this research was to determine the priority environmental management training needs (drinking water, wastewater, and solid waste), classroom training system preferences and related cultural factors of Native American tribal officials with environmental responsibilities living on reservations in the United States. The researcher conducted telephone interviews with 18 tribal officials on reservations in diverse geographic areas of the United States to determine their classroom training preferences. These officials also responded to a mail/fax survey comprised of 28 statements describing their environmental responsibilities in the areas of drinking water, wastewater, and solid waste. In the eighty-one-years since the United States entered World War I, the question of whether President Woodrow Wilson formulated a coherent and rational policy to defeat Germany has continued to be one of the central conundrums of his presidency. Relying on primary sources, especially the voluminous Papers of Woodrow Wilson, this thesis examines Wilson's failure to reconcile his liberal war aims toward Germany with America's entry into the war. The evolving nature of the partnership between Wilson and his key advisor, Colonel Edwin M. House, will also be studied in light of the key role it played in the formulation …

Two base camps, along with their branch camps, located in the state of Iowa will provide the focus for this study. The camps in Iowa, located near the towns of Algona and Clarinda, provide an example of two camps that met or exceeded the criteria set by the Geneva Convention of 1929. The creation and administration of the camps raises three questions which constitute the body of this thesis. The first deals with the founding, administration and operation of the camps. Secondly, the study investigates the daily life of the camp inmates. Finally the third question examines how townspeople and …

Scholars of rhetoric and speech communications have suggested that the study of a women's rhetoric should focus on the "distinctly female modes of leadership" that may be found among women in "out-groups" that challenge established political authority. Such leaders must be especially inventive to be effective, and are thus likely to be talented rhetoricians. In looking for such leaders, the religious and political rhetoric of early Latter-day Saint women provides a noteworthy, unique study. Nineteenth-century Mormon women not only battled discriminatory political norms—arguing fervently for both universal woman's suffrage and for the freedom to practice polygamy—they did so from their …
