Researchers and the general public have often contended that punishment of children for speaking their native languages in schools is the cause of the decline of those languages. But native language loss in Alaska is rooted also in the choices Natives made themselves to accept English for its social, economic, and political opportunities. Since the United States purchased Alaska in 1867, English has replaced native languages as the first language learned by children in nearly all homes. Molecular Modelling Studies Of Acetylcholinesterase, Charilaos E. Linaras

Dissertations

The controversial role of electrostatic interactions in the process of steering of acetylcholine into the active site of acetylcholinesterases was investigated in this study. A novel methodology was implemented to simulate the process of recognition of acetylcholine by Torpedo Californica and both wild type and charge neutralized mutated Human AChE. The obtained results suggest the important role of coulombic interactions in the steering process. The steering process of selected irreversible AChE inhibitors was also simulated supporting the role of electrostatic interactions in the recognition process.

Fergus M. Bordewich's foray into Native American politics and identity is disturbing on a number of different levels. It is, on the one hand, a remarkably accurate look at Native American political dilemmas, frustrations, and achievements. On the other, it is a flawed survey of what it means to be Native American in the United States. It lacks a clear critical framework and races willy-nilly from one group to another, judging achievements on the basis of economic success or how the tribes fit into the hierarchical apparatus that runs the nation.

Hoping to avoid violent incidents and possible warfare along its frontiers, the fledgling United States government established in 1796 a system for dealing with depredation claims. It provided the machinery through which both Indians and pioneers could apply for indemnity for losses incurred as a result of their dealings with each other. Despite such benign goals, the machinery seldom operated as envisioned. The claims process, too slow to prevent recurring violence, was so fraud-ridden that even honest claimants had to run a gauntlet of suspicious officials to have their cases considered. The primary objective of this research is to develop an inexpensive and reliable method to generate vapor pulses of explosives using 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene TNTl for proof of concept. A secondary objective is to demonstrate the use of the vapor generator in various applications keeping in mind potential field scenarios involving explosives. A vapor generator/collector system was developed which gives reproducible pulses of TNT vapors at nanogram levels. The use of this technology was demonstrated in evaluating different surfaces for vapor adsorption of TNT in conjunction with ion mobility spectrometry as the primary analytical tool. On Uneven Ground: Tracing A Slave Route From Salaga To Cape Coast, Laura Tanz

The project I have completed consist of two elements. First of all, I traced a slave route from Salaga to Cape Coast. While following this route, I stopped in town's which were historically slave markets in an effort to interview members of the community about the current effects of the slavery. Secondly, I attempted to walk from Atebubu to Cape Coast in order to have a concrete comprehension for the distance covered by those who were forced to walk the distance before me, in addition to having a better understanding of Ghana.

Theses

Chlorpyrifos is a member of the organophosphorus class of insecticides. This class of insecticides has become one of the most widely under groups of pest control chemicals. Early organophosphorus compounds that were found to be efficacious for insect control and thus brought into widespread use, e.g. Chlorpyrifos, Parathion and Malathion. The broad-spectrum insecticidal properties of Chlorpyrifos indicated that it possessed substantial commercial potential to use against a wide variety of important arthropod pest via a number of commercialized products.
