Forensic Accounting: Turning Cpas Into Private Eyes, Gina Ferraro

Honors Capstones

Forensic accounting is the integration of accounting, auditing, and investigative skills. This discipline has gained immense popularity in recent years. In fact, this field is expanding so rapidly that the number of qualified individuals in this area is not meeting its demand for job opportunities. Perhaps this dilemma can be solved by making current and future accounting professionals more aware of their chances for advancement into this relatively new field. Throughout this paper, I discuss the reasons for the increased need for forensic accountants. Before examining the job opportunities available in this field, I also outline the necessary skills and …

Dialogue: A Qualitative Study Of A Faculty Development Intervention To Assist Faculty In Exploring The Practitioner Assumptions That Impact Their Role In Higher Education And Medical Education, Donna M. Qualters

Educational Studies Dissertations

The Dialogue study is concerned with understanding how Dialogue could be applied to faculty development. Dialogue is a structured form of group interaction developed as an organizational behavior tool (Isaacs, 1993) which creates space for practitioner assumptions to be probed and insight into practice be achieved. It provides an intervention for faculty at the pre-contemplative stage of change (Prochaska, 1986), who are not motivated to modify their practice. The study focused on self-selected multi-discipline faculty from a four year institution and a public medical school. Participants ranged in experience from one to thirty five years of practice. This study was …

The Characteristics Of Learners Enrolled In Advanced Level Courses In Hebrew, Chinese, And Japanese At Brandeis University, Vardit Ringvald

Educational Studies Dissertations

Researchers, practitioners, and policy makers in the field of foreign language study in higher education in the United States are familiar with the phenomenon of declining numbers among learners in advanced foreign language courses. The studies that have examined this phenomenon such as Graman (1987) and Dupuy (1994) investigated the learners of so-called "easy" and commonly taught languages, such as French, German and Spanish and suggest that the learners' positive learning backgrounds outside the formal language program are the main factors that influence the learners' decision to continue their language study in the advanced level courses. This study offers new …

The Role And Impact Of Leaders' Mental Models In Effecting Planned Transformational Change, Stephen C. Rathmill Jan 1998

The Role And Impact Of Leaders' Mental Models In Effecting Planned Transformational Change, Stephen C. Rathmill

Educational Studies Dissertations

Presidents and CEOs play a critical role in leading their organizations through planned transformational change (PTC) and generally, do not do it very well. This may, in part, be a result of leaders not closely examining and challenging their thinking about PTC and their role in leading it. Leaders' mental models determine what and how they think about their organizations, employees, transformational change and what their leadership means and how their mental models determine their actions and behaviors in planning and implementing PTC. By examining and challenging their mental models, leaders may gain insights into alternative ways of leading and …

Community Service And Political Identity Development In Adolescence, Miranda Yates, James Youniss Jan 1998

Community Service And Political Identity Development In Adolescence, Miranda Yates, James Youniss

Civic Engagement

This article addresses the interconnection of political socialization and identity development. We begin with Erikson 's work, which identified the development of political commitment in adolescence as a key aspect of identity formation. We then seek to shed light on the social processes through which youth become engaged in political activities and issues. We discuss the influences of family and peers as well as participation in community service and other civic activities. The development of social responsibility and agency, and an understanding of the complexity of social issues are considered as important facets of political commitment. Data from a case …

Motivational Levels Of School-Aged Children After Participation In An Outdoor Education Experience, Timothy Eugene Speicher Jan 1998

Motivational Levels Of School-Aged Children After Participation In An Outdoor Education Experience, Timothy Eugene Speicher

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

How can we motivate our children to be active? This question has received significant attention in the past 20 years in our society and throughout the world. In days past, this question was not one of concern, as the children were working hard to help their families sustain their farms or businesses. Children often looked at their time away from family responsibilities as time to escape outdoors to play and have fun. Unfortunately, there has been a shift in our culture within the past 20 years towards a more sedentary type of lifestyle, embracing technology with all its time saving …

Mea Culpa: Formal Education And The Dis-Integrated World., Brian P. Coppola, Douglas S. Daniels

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Formal education has removed itself so far from any truly integrated view of the Natural World that fragmentation and certainty are prevailing ethics. Technological progress has resulted in increased specialization within academic disciplines and their concurrent separation from each other. Knowledge is extracted from a fully integrated world, but is examined and defined by the 'dis-integrated' objectives.

In more recent times mentoring has been most prominent in academic and business settings. Most often, mentoring takes the form of an unstructured relationship but many businesses and some universities have developed formal mentoring programs. The mentoring research …

The workplace also provides the employee with an opportunity for support in making healthy lifestyle changes. Numerous studies have documented that worksite health promotion programs will improve employee health and morale, increase productivity, and decrease absenteeism. Comparing the cost to the benefits is often the basis for making business decisions, including the decision to implement a health promotion …

The Incidence Of Domestic Violence Among A Group Of Iowa Women In Substance Abuse Treatment, Patricia G. Fitzgerald

The contribution of alcohol or drugs to this phenomena is frequently acknowledged but rarely examined in detail. This paper reports the incidence of domestic violence among …
