Complete Single-Ionization Momentum Spectra For Strong Perturbation Collisions, Ronald E. Olson, C. J. Wood, H. Schmidt-Böcking, R. Moshammer, J. Ullrich

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The combination of recoil ion and ionized electron momentum spectroscopy provides an unparalleled method to investigate the details of ion-atom collision dynamics in kinematically complete experiments. To predict single ionization scattering behavior at the level now realized by experiment, the classical trajectory three-body Monte Carlo method has been used to obtain complete momenta information for the ionized electron, recoil ion, and projectile in the collision plane defined by the incident projectile and outgoing recoil ion. Strongly coupled systems were considered where the charge state of the projectile divided by the speed of the collision [Formula Presented] is greater than unity. …

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We have used the energy and angular distributions of the low-energy electron emission cross sections from the preceding paper [Lokesh C. Tribedi et al., Phys. Rev. A 58, 3619 (1998)] to derive the doubly differential final-state longitudinal momentum distributions of the electrons, recoil ions, and projectiles in ion-atom ionization for [Formula Presented] The complementary nature of the electron spectroscopy and the recoil-ion momentum spectroscopy have been investigated using a formulation based on three-body kinematics to explore the ionization dynamics in detail. The influence of the three-body ionization as well as the binary-encounter processes on the recoil-ion (and projectile) longitudinal momentum …

Effect Of Exchange Interactions At Antiferromagnetic/Ferromagnetic Interfaces On Exchange Bias And Coercivity, D. Dimitrov, Shufeng Zhang Jan 1998

Effect Of Exchange Interactions At Antiferromagnetic/Ferromagnetic Interfaces On Exchange Bias And Coercivity, D. Dimitrov, Shufeng Zhang

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We report on the correlation between unidirectional and uniaxial anisotropy in exchange-biased ferromagnetic Permalloy layers. The dependence of exchange bias and coercivity on temperature and the antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic layer thickness was studied and compared with the predictions of different theoretical models. A thorough explanation of the experimental data is provided by theoretical extension of Malozemoff's model. © 1998 The American Physical Society.

The Conditional Heteroscedasticity Of The Yen-Dollar Exchange Rates, Yiu Kuen Tse Jan 1998

The Conditional Heteroscedasticity Of The Yen-Dollar Exchange Rates, Yiu Kuen Tse

Research Collection School Of Economics

This paper examines the conditional heteroscedasticity of the yen-dollar exchange rate. A model is constructed by extending the asymmetric power autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity model to a process that is fractionally integrated. It is found that, unlike the equity markets, the appreciation and depreciation shocks of the yen against the dollar have similar effects on future volatilities. Although the results reject both the stable and the integrated models, our analysis of the response coefficients of the past shocks and the application of the models to the estimation of the capital requirements for trading the currencies show that there are no substantial …

Partial Sequencing Of A Balbiani Ring Gene And Development Of A Molecular Probe, Kerri Ann Kurzeja

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

The Environmental Protection Agency is currently developing sediment quality criteria in order to protect the nation's water sources. In order to assist in the development of standards for the disposal of heavy metals, our laboratory is undergoing sediment toxicity studies on Chironomus riparius. It is an EPA approved test organism that spends most of its life in the sediment. Following a previous study (Cochrane et al., 1994), the organism's response to heavy metals will be monitored on the genetic level. Several genes, including a Balbiani ring (BR) gene, which was the focus of this thesis, will be studied to determine …

Acclaiming, Attacking, And Defending On Political Talk Radio, Joseph R. Blaney, P. M. Pier Jan 1998

Acclaiming, Attacking, And Defending On Political Talk Radio, Joseph R. Blaney, P. M. Pier

Iowa Journal of Communication

In recent years, the importance of talk radio has grown dramatically. From 1989 to 1994, the number of news/talk radio stations grew from 308 to 1,028 (Petrozello, 1994a). Furthermore, one seventh of all radio revenue in 1993 came from buys at talk outlets (Petrozello, 1994b). Among American adults, 18% report listening to political talk shows at least twice every week (Cappella, Turow, & Jamieson, 1996). Anecdotal evidence suggests chat calk radio can be highly influential in the electoral process (Zerbinos, 1995/1996). On February 12, 1996, the leading contenders for the Republican presidential nomination appeared ad seriatum on Des Moines calk …

A Learning Strategy For The Application Of Interpersonal Theories, William A. Ausmus Jan 1998

A Learning Strategy For The Application Of Interpersonal Theories, William A. Ausmus

Iowa Journal of Communication

Scientific theories are used primarily to predict and control. In that regard interpersonal theories are not very useful if applied to interpersonal relationships. But theories are also used to evaluate, describe, explain, and understand (Cragan & Shields, 1998). The learning project I describe is designed for students of interpersonal communication as they learn to use and apply interpersonal theories to their everyday relational interactions. The learning project consists of three components. 1. Students are asked to identify and describe an interpersonal communication problem. The problem is analyzed using interpersonal theories and a prescription/solution based in theory is also developed. 2. …

Speaking Improvement And Speech Preparation: Clarifying The Relationships Among Interpersonal, Intrapersonal, And Public Speaking, Vickie Harvey Jan 1998

Speaking Improvement And Speech Preparation: Clarifying The Relationships Among Interpersonal, Intrapersonal, And Public Speaking, Vickie Harvey

Iowa Journal of Communication

It is only recently that the issue at hand has received the attention it deserves. Many colleges across the country are requiring that all undergraduates take a public speaking course. In the past, textbooks and teachers of public speaking have focused primarily on developing public speaking skills in their classrooms. This study examined public speaking as an outcome of not only public speaking skills but also intrapersonal and interpersonal skill development. The research focused on identifying the speech preparation variables that students use and correlated them to perceived speaker improvement. One hundred and eighteen students completed the questionnaire, which was …

Reminiscences On Rhetoric: Jerry Rubin, Uni, And The Spring Of 1970, Terry J. Knapp Jan 1998

Reminiscences On Rhetoric: Jerry Rubin, Uni, And The Spring Of 1970, Terry J. Knapp

Iowa Journal of Communication

In the spring of 1970, radical political activist Jerry Rubin spoke at the University of Northern Iowa as a part of the Controversial Speakers Program. His speech was half rhetoric and half theater. It tested the limits of free expression and provided the occasion for risky, but courageous, actions by university officials. It made rural midwesterners confront an urban anarchist, and it remains as a reminder of a period when lengthy public addresses played an important role in the formation of public views, a time when the speech counted more than the spin.

Student Reported Value Of Using Case Stimulations To Teach Organizational Communication, Mary Lou Higgerson Jan 1998

Student Reported Value Of Using Case Stimulations To Teach Organizational Communication, Mary Lou Higgerson

Iowa Journal of Communication

Instructors of organizational communication often use case studies to allow students to observe how theory operates in a "real world" context. Case simulation moves beyond traditional case study use by combining case study with role play over an extended period of time and forcing students to leave the comfortable role of third person observer to become first person participants. This study reports the findings of research conducted to learn if, and more specifically what, students learn from case simulations. The results offer instructors more insight on the value and potential benefit of using case simulations.

Language And The Globalization Of The Economic Market: The Regulation Of Language As A Barrier To Free Trade, Stacy A. Feld Jan 1998

Language And The Globalization Of The Economic Market: The Regulation Of Language As A Barrier To Free Trade, Stacy A. Feld

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

The European Union has devoted recent efforts to establishing an integrated global economy, free of barriers or hindrances, primarily through Article 30 of the Treaty Establishing the European Community, the central free movement of goods principle. By eliminating barriers to free trade, the European Union seeks to achieve a single globalized economy among its Member States. Not surprisingly, economic globalization in the European Union has given rise to an integration of political and cultural values among European nations. As a result of this "convergence of values," Member States have responded by enacting protectionist measures that reassert their regulatory autonomy over …

Malaysia's Censorship Regime Collides With The Economic Realities Of The Twenty-First Century, Aaron D. Davidson Jan 1998

Malaysia's Censorship Regime Collides With The Economic Realities Of The Twenty-First Century, Aaron D. Davidson

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

Despite an extensive history of censorship and political speech suppression, Malaysia's Vision 2020 goal of becoming a fully developed nation requires the nation to facilitate an open exchange of ideas and information. The government seeks to create a center for broadcasting, filmmaking, and the development of multimedia products. While Malaysia has begun to abandon some of its censorship practices, the remaining restrictions on its citizens' speech and press freedoms threaten to hamstring the country's efforts to become a fully developed nation by 2020.

This Note discusses Malaysia's beginning as a British colony, identifying the religious, racial, and class distinctions now …

Mandating English Proficiency For College Instructors: States' Responses To "The Ta Problem", Kenneth King Jan 1998

Mandating English Proficiency For College Instructors: States' Responses To "The Ta Problem", Kenneth King

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

This Note examines the background, provisions, effects, and constitutionality of state legislation mandating English proficiency assessment for college instructors. Such legislation responds to complaints about the comprehensibility of international instructors--particularly teaching assistants--at U.S. colleges and universities. U.S. universities employ large numbers of international instructors in scientific, technical, and business fields. Such employment is only one aspect of a broader U.S. importation of scientific and technical talent. This Note first considers the background and legitimacy of complaints about international instructors, and then examines the background and details of specific state provisions. It discusses the statutes' effects and particular concerns they raise, …

Pierre Goes Online: Blacklisting And Secondary Boycotts In U.S. Trade Policy, Peter L. Fitzgerald Jan 1998

Pierre Goes Online: Blacklisting And Secondary Boycotts In U.S. Trade Policy, Peter L. Fitzgerald

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

The extraterritorial application of U.S. economic sanctions and trade controls is a perennial topic of discussion among international trade practitioners and a frequent cause for concern abroad. While long present in one form or another as part of several U.S. trade and export control programs, there has been a resurgence in the use of unilateral extraterritorial trade regulation by the United States following the unraveling of widespread international consensus on who should be the targets for such controls and sanctions as a result of the breakup of the Soviet Union, and the demise of the international Coordinating Committee on Multilateral …

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

This Essay identifies the denial of adequate and available food and the denials of adequate medicine and medical supplies in Sri Lanka as serious human rights violations. Additionally, the Author cites customary international law and international agreements to support his conclusion that the government's denial of these necessities in Sri Lanka constitute war crimes. The Author discusses the human rights violations with respect to: (1) the right to adequate food; (2) the right to adequate medicine and medical supplies; and (3) the right to freedom from arbitrary and inhumane detention and controls. The Author concludes by urging that the U.S. …

The Vienna Convention On Consular Relations: A Study Of Rights, Wrongs, And Remedies, William J. Aceves Jan 1998

The Vienna Convention On Consular Relations: A Study Of Rights, Wrongs, And Remedies, William J. Aceves

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

This Article reviews U.S. compliance with the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations and the ability of foreign governments to seek redress for treaty violations in federal courts. The Vienna Convention requires signatory states to notify detained foreign nationals of their right to consular access. While the United States has sought to ensure that foreign governments comply with the provisions of the Vienna Convention when they detain U.S. citizens abroad, it has failed to ensure that foreign nationals are provided with comparable protection when they are detained in the United States.

The Author examines several cases in which both foreign nationals …

The Relevance Of The Concepts Of War And Armed Conflict To The Law Of Neutrality, Georgios C. Petrochilos Jan 1998

The Relevance Of The Concepts Of War And Armed Conflict To The Law Of Neutrality, Georgios C. Petrochilos

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

The law of neutrality applies among states engaged in war and third states seeking to maintain friendly relations with the belligerent states. While belligerent parties possess belligerent rights, including those in the Law of Prize, states deemed neutral must fulfill certain neutral duties. In exchange, neutral states enjoy the protection afforded to neutral parties by the law of neutrality.

The Article focuses on the state of affairs that triggers application of the law of neutrality. The law addressing this issue leaves many questions unanswered. This Article addresses the importance of the declaration of war by belligerent states in assessing whether …
