An Evaluation Of The Relative Value Of Spectral And Phenological Information For Tree Crown Classification Of Digital Images In The Eastern Deciduous Forest., Thomas Lee Key Jr.

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Digitized, multitemporal, small format 35 mm aerial photographs were acquired, processed, and classified to determine the relative value of spectral and phenological information for tree crown classification of digital images of the Eastern Deciduous Forest. The one-hectare study site, located in a second-growth forest 15 km east of Morgantown, West Virginia, was photographed from a light aircraft ten times from May to October 1997 using both true color and false color film. The negatives and positive transparencies were scanned, and then rectified, enhanced, and classified using ERDAS Imagine. Differences in the timing of phenologic events between tree species, specifically leaf …

Dynamic Response Of The Human Skull-Brain Complex To Impact: Points Of Maximum Stress And Pressure., Rinitha Palkamsetty

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study addresses the transient dynamic response of a human skull-brain complex under impact loads. Three cross-sections; sagittal, transverse and coronal of the brain are considered to perform the transient dynamic analysis that describes the kinematics and stress wave patterns of the internal motions in the skull and brain mass. The models include cerebral spinal fluid and meningi membrane along with the skull and the viscoelastic brain tissue. The analysis is performed using the program LS-DYNA3D for the analysis of frontal, lateral and top impact. The results produced include the loci of points that carry the maximum stresses as the …

Assessing Silica And Dissolved Oxygen Effects On Copper Corrosion Control In Southern Nevada Water Treatment And Supply System, Abdel-Rahman M Toubat Jan 1998

Assessing Silica And Dissolved Oxygen Effects On Copper Corrosion Control In Southern Nevada Water Treatment And Supply System, Abdel-Rahman M Toubat

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

A pilot plant study was performed to investigate both the effect of silica on the corrosion process in the water system, and the effect of increased oxygen concentration resulting from ozonation on copper corrosion in the water system. The piping system used in the pilot plant resembled a household piping system, and consisted of four loops of copper pipes. Silica was added to the finished water before entering the loops at three different concentrations and corrosion was monitored by measuring copper concentration in first-draw weekly samples taken from the pilot system. Silica addition was monitored on a daily basis. Alkalinity, …

Navigational Fuzzy Logic Control Of An Autonomous Vehicle, Neil Eugene Hodge Jan 1998

Navigational Fuzzy Logic Control Of An Autonomous Vehicle, Neil Eugene Hodge

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The control of an autonomous passenger vehicle to reach a target amid static and dynamic obstacles is presented. To accommodate various model and environmental uncertainties, fuzzy logic is used in designing the vehicle's controller. The controller evaluates sensor information and outputs signals to change the vehicle's steering and throttle angles. To emulate human behavior, the controller is divided into separate modules. Each module deals with a specific navigational problem such as target steering, target throttle control, cornering throttle control, collision avoidance steering, and collision avoidance throttle control. Several simulation examples are included.

Low-Temperature Molecular Beam Epitaxy Of Gallium Arsenide Antisite Incorporation And Rheed Oscillations: A Theoretical Study, Natarajan Krishnan Jan 1998

Low-Temperature Molecular Beam Epitaxy Of Gallium Arsenide Antisite Incorporation And Rheed Oscillations: A Theoretical Study, Natarajan Krishnan

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Surface dynamics dominate the incorporation of charged and neutral antisite arsenic and the temporal variation of reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED) intensity in the low temperature (LT) molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) of (100) gallium arsenide (GaAs). A comprehensive rate equation model is proposed based on the presence and dynamics of a physisorbed arsenic (PA) riding the growth surface which dictates the incorporation and concentration of antisites and the RHEED oscillations (ROs) behavior. The dependence of antisite concentrations on growth parameters can be explained based on the saturation of the PA layer coverage at a monolayer and the competing rate …

Moonscape, Deborah Starr Lake Jan 1998

Moonscape, Deborah Starr Lake

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Moonscape is a short novel exploring the interplay of incest and prostitution. The novel is set in Las Vegas in the late seventies, with flashbacks to the thirties when Hoover Dam was built. The thesis relies on first person narratives to incorporate three points of view; two feminine, one masculine. The inspiration for the novel comes from William Faulkner's Absalom! Absalom!, but the form and setting for the piece follows T. S. Eliot's poem, "The Wasteland". One character is patterned after Eliot's Sweeney, the heathen pragmatist who appears throughout his poetry until 1927, the year of Eliot's conversion to Anglicanism. …

Enhancing Elementary Curricula Through Internet Technology, Brad E. Oliver, Loren D. Malm, Bobby G. Malone, Fred W. Nay, Nancy G. Saunders, Jay C. Thompson Jr.

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

Radical advancements in Internet technology over the last decade have created endless opportunities to expand the realm of the elementary classroom. The World Wide Web (WWW), e-mail, Newsgroups, and Internet Relay Chat (IRC) are four of the most prominent utilizations of Internet technology. This paper demonstrates how one mid-western, suburban elementary classroom has enhanced its curriculum and improved classroom interaction by maximizing Internet technology. In addition to reviewing the merits of this case study, the reader will also: (a) be presented with a rationale for utilizing Internet technology with existing curricula, (b) examine the current debate on the issue of …

The Supermarket Supply Chain In Shanghai, Gavin Sinclair, Ananth Iyer, Jane Anderson Jan 1998

The Supermarket Supply Chain In Shanghai, Gavin Sinclair, Ananth Iyer, Jane Anderson

Department of Management Faculty Publications

The authors conducted a series of structured interviews with managers of ten supermarket chains in Shanghai to compare supermarket business practices in Shanghai with those in the United States, emphasizing logistics management issues. Shanghai supermarkets tend to be smaller than U.S. stores, but the store layout and product selection are similar in both countries. While the Shanghai supermarkets have modern scanning equipment, they do little quantitative sales or inventory analysis.

Voluntary Participation And Spite In Public Good Provision Experiments: An International Comparison, Timothy N. Cason, Tatsuyoshi Saijo, T. Yamato Jan 1998

Voluntary Participation And Spite In Public Good Provision Experiments: An International Comparison, Timothy N. Cason, Tatsuyoshi Saijo, T. Yamato

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

This paper studies public good provision in the laboratory using the voluntary contribution mechanism, in a cross-cultural experiment conducted in the United States and Japan. Our environment differs from the standard voluntary contribution mechanism because in one treatment, subjects first decide whether or not to participate in providing this public good. This participation decision is conveyed to the other subject prior to the subjects' contribution decisions.
