Observability Of Counterpropagating Modes At Fractional Quantum Hall Edges, U. Zülicke, A. H. Macdonald, M. D. Johnson Jan 1998

Observability Of Counterpropagating Modes At Fractional Quantum Hall Edges, U. Zülicke, A. H. Macdonald, M. D. Johnson

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

When the bulk filling factor is nu=1-1/m with m odd, at. least one counterpropagating chiral collective mode occurs simultaneously with magnetoplasmons at the edge of Fractional quantum Hall samples. Initial experimental searches for an additional mode were unsuccessful. In this paper, we address conditions under which its observation should be expected in experiments where the electronic system is excited and probed by capacitive coupling. We derive realistic expressions for the velocity of the slow counterpropagating mode, starting from a microscopic calculation which is simplified by a Landau-Silin-like separation between long-range Hartree and residual interactions. The microscopic calculation determines the stiffness …

Social And Regional Observations Of Contemporary China : An Exploration Of The Human Element As It Relates To Modernization., Patricia A. Weeks

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

China has been working for nearly a century to bring about the modernization of what has been considered the world's oldest continuous major world civilization. The initial call for reform came from the late Emperor Guangxu in the late 1890s after he realized that China seriously lagged behind the world on most fronts. Europe and America had undergone the pains of modernization through the industrial revolution, a phenomenon that China chose to ignore, and were now reaping the benefits. Japan, a nation more closely related to China, had prospered by imitating the West and taking advantage of its technology and …

Resource management technical reports

High water use vegetation systems for salinity control were trialed on a 70 ha catchment located about 15 km north of Williams, Western Australia. The catchment receives about 545 mm annual rainfall and 1870 mm annual evaporation. Development of salinity is characterised by passive discharge upslope from a dolerite dyke. Because recharge exceeds the discharge capacity of current seeps, there is potential for new seeps to develop in the mid to lower slopes.

Forgiveness: The Key To Spiritual Warfare, Jerry L. Graham

Journal of the American Society for Church Growth

Among the many barriers to church growth is an unforgiving spirit in the congregation. Jerry Graham’s article on “Forgiveness: The Key To Spiritual Warfare” completes this issue of the journal in fine fashion. His article is not a rehash of teaching on forgiveness but rather a revealing look at how forgiveness and spiritual warfare are related.

Improved Proportional-Integral (Pi) Logic For Canal Automation, Charles M. Burt, R S. Mills, Ram Dhan Khalsa, V. C. Ruiz

BioResource and Agricultural Engineering

Successful implementation of Proportional-Integral (PI) control logic for gate automation on irrigation canals has been problematic because of difficulties in tuning the PI controllers for a wide range of flows. This research shows that successful and relatively simple tuning for upstream controllers can be accomplished if one uses the velocity form of the PI logic. The velocity form must be modified with a newly-developed Universal Factor (UF) concept, which accounts for the nonlinearity of the upstream water level response to gate movement. The UF function is unique for each check structure, and can be determined with a steady state simulation …

A Transient Computational Fluid Dynamic Model Of A Unit Injector Using Methanol Fuel., Eugene Anthony Mckenzie Jan 1998

A Transient Computational Fluid Dynamic Model Of A Unit Injector Using Methanol Fuel., Eugene Anthony Mckenzie

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The use of alternative fuels such as Ethanol, Methanol and Natural Gas in automotive applications has increased due to the strict environmental regulations. These are used to reduce automotive emissions, especially in heavy trucks and city bus fleets. Most of these vehicles use diesel fuel as their primary fuel. Trucks and buses with Detroit Diesel engines have the option to operate using methanol as their primary fuel instead of diesel fuel. Due to the low lubricity of methanol fuel, the unit fuel injectors injecting methanol fuel have a shorter operating life than those injecting diesel fuel do. To study the …

Engineering The Middle Classes: Class Line-Drawing In New Deal Hours Legislation, Deborah C. Malamud Jan 1998

Engineering The Middle Classes: Class Line-Drawing In New Deal Hours Legislation, Deborah C. Malamud

Michigan Law Review

The likely readers of this Article work for a living, or are studying with the hope that they will work for a living very soon. Unlike many other workers in this society, they do not (and will not) get paid time-and-a-half for overtime. In this Article, I tell the story of how upper-level white-collar workers - people like the intended readers of this Article - came to be exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act's general overtime rules. My purpose in telling this story is not to participate in the debate on whether the so-called "white-collar exemptions" to the Fair …

An Evaluation Of The Relative Value Of Spectral And Phenological Information For Tree Crown Classification Of Digital Images In The Eastern Deciduous Forest., Thomas Lee Key Jr.

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Digitized, multitemporal, small format 35 mm aerial photographs were acquired, processed, and classified to determine the relative value of spectral and phenological information for tree crown classification of digital images of the Eastern Deciduous Forest. The one-hectare study site, located in a second-growth forest 15 km east of Morgantown, West Virginia, was photographed from a light aircraft ten times from May to October 1997 using both true color and false color film. The negatives and positive transparencies were scanned, and then rectified, enhanced, and classified using ERDAS Imagine. Differences in the timing of phenologic events between tree species, specifically leaf …

Dynamic Response Of The Human Skull-Brain Complex To Impact: Points Of Maximum Stress And Pressure., Rinitha Palkamsetty

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study addresses the transient dynamic response of a human skull-brain complex under impact loads. Three cross-sections; sagittal, transverse and coronal of the brain are considered to perform the transient dynamic analysis that describes the kinematics and stress wave patterns of the internal motions in the skull and brain mass. The models include cerebral spinal fluid and meningi membrane along with the skull and the viscoelastic brain tissue. The analysis is performed using the program LS-DYNA3D for the analysis of frontal, lateral and top impact. The results produced include the loci of points that carry the maximum stresses as the …
