Evaluation Of Carbon Fiber/Polyetheretherketone Composites Exposed To Marine Microbial Communities In Laboratory Media And Natural Seawater, Andrew Douglas Sheetz Jan 1998

Evaluation Of Carbon Fiber/Polyetheretherketone Composites Exposed To Marine Microbial Communities In Laboratory Media And Natural Seawater, Andrew Douglas Sheetz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

This research proposed to characterize any microbial induced degradation of carbon fiber/polyetheretherketone (PEEK) composites from acid-producing bacteria (APB) and sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB). Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was used to provide a measure of degradation of the composite system as a function of exposure time. In addition, mechanical testing and microscopic evaluation of the specimens were utilized to determine if changes in the EIS spectra as a function of exposure time correlated to changes in the mechanical properties. Results from most EIS scans were consistent with a well-consolidated and undamaged composite system. Changes in the EIS response of specimens exposed to …

Trajectory Control Of A New Class Of Cnc Machine Tools, Daoxi. Xiu Jan 1998

Trajectory Control Of A New Class Of Cnc Machine Tools, Daoxi. Xiu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

One emerging application of parallel manipulators is to use them as CNC (Computerized Numerical Controlled) machine tools and recently several prototypes of such CNC machines have been developed, all based on hexapod machine--a type of parallel manipulators similar to a Stewart platform. The goal of this research is to develop an effective control scheme, cross-coupling control, for this type of CNC machine tools, which will reduce the contouring errors and thus further enhance their advantages. This dissertation describes the research work as follows. Firstly. based on the analysis of the kinematics and dynamics, a PID (Proportional-Integral-Derivative) controller was designed for …

Variances In Meta-Analysis, Katherine L B Humphreys Jan 1998

Variances In Meta-Analysis, Katherine L B Humphreys

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Meta-analysis is a statistical method of combining many individual analyses. This thesis reviews the need for meta-analysis; the many statistical consideration facing the meta-analyst; and some of Hedges' results concerning the combined estimate of effect size with unequal weights from his 1981 and 1982 papers. Unequal weights used to combine estimates of effect size in meta-analysis are derived using the variances given by the large sample, normal approximation of the distribution of Hedges' unbiased estimates of effect sizes. These variances depend on the effect size and the sample sizes of both experimental and control groups. This creates circular definitions and …

This paper presents the first analysis of diffractive photon dissociation events in deep inelastic positron-proton scattering at HERA in which the proton in the final state is detected and its momentum measured. The events are selected by requiring a scattered proton in the ZEUS leading proton spectrometer (LPS) with xL > 0.97, where xL is the fraction of the incoming proton beam momentum carried by the scattered proton. The use of the LPS significantly reduces the contamination from events with diffractive dissociation of the proton into low mass states and allows a direct measurement of t, the square of the four-momentum …

Differential dijet cross sections have been measured with the ZEUS detector for photoproduction events in which the hadronic final state containing the jets is separated with respect to the outgoing proton direction by a large rapidity gap. The cross section has been measured as a function of the fraction of the photon (xγOBS) and pomeron (βOBS) momentum participating in the production of the dijet system. The observed xγOBS dependence shows evidence for the presence of a resolved-as well as a direct-photon component. The measured cross section dσ/dβOBS increases as βOBS increases indicating that there is a sizeable contribution to dijet …

Dijet cross sections are presented using photoproduction data obtained with the ZEUS detector during 1994. These measurements represent an extension of previous results, as the higher statistics allow cross sections to be measured at higher jet transverse energy (ETjet). Jets are identified in the hadronic final state using three different algorithms, and the cross sections compared to complete next-to-leading order QCD calculations. Agreement with these calculations is seen for the pseudorapidity dependence of the direct photon events with ETjet > 6 GeV and of the resolved photon events with ETjet > 11 GeV. Calculated cross sections for resolved photon processes with 6 …

Charged particles (h±) and K0 mesons have been studied in photoproduced events containing at least one jet of ET > 8 GeV n a pseudorapidity interval (-0.5, 0.5) in the ZEUS laboratory frame. Distributions are presented in terms of transverse momentum, pseudorapidity and distance of the particle from the axis of a jet. The properties of h± within the jet are described well using the standard settings of PYTHIA, but the use of the multiparton interaction option improves the description outside the jets.

The shape of jets produced in quasi-real photon-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies in the range 134-277 GeV has been measured using the hadronic energy flow. The measurement was done with the ZEUS detector at HERA. Jets are identified using a cone algorithm in the η - φ plane with a cone radius of one unit. Measured jet shapes both in inclusive jet and dijet production with transverse energies EjetT > 14 GeV are presented. The jet shape broadens as the jet pseudorapidity (ηjet) increases and narrows as EjetT increases. In dijet photoproduction, the jet shapes have been measured separately for samples …

Inclusive jet differential cross sections for the reaction e+p → e+ + jet + X with quasi-real photons have been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA. These cross sections are given for the photon-proton centre-of-mass energy interval 134 < W < 277 GeV and jet pseudorapidity in the range -1 < ηjet < 2 in the laboratory frame. The results are presented for three cone radii in the η - φ plane, R = 1.0, 0.7 and 0.5. Measurements of dσ/dηjet above various jet-transverse-energy thresholds up to 25 GeV and in three ranges of W are presented and compared to next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD calculations. For jets defined with R = 1.0 differences between data and NLO calculations are seen at high ηjet and low EjetT. The measured cross sections for jets defined with R = 0.7 are well described by the calculations in the entire measured range ηjet and EjetT. The inclusive jet cross section for EjetT > 21 GeV is consistent with an approximately linear variation with the cone radius R in the range between 0.5 and 1.0, and with NLO calculations.

On Teaching Legal Ethics With Stories About Clients, Thomas L. Shaffer

The comparison I have in mind is between what goes on at Notre Dame and what goes on in one of Professor James Boyd White's law and literature classes at the University of Michigan. Both classes use provocation. White provokes his students with an array of assigned readings, all of them about people, not all of them about law, ranging from Homer and Plato to Fowler on the split infinitive and the autobiography of Dick Gregory. We provoke our students with a parade of accounts from our members, accounts of people they think they can help.

White's enterprise is, I …

The Christian Jurisprudence Of Robert E. Rodes Jr., Thomas L. Shaffer

Journal Articles

When I had the chance to leave law practice and become a fulltime law teacher, I turned, in the time-honored fashion, for advice from my law teachers. The most memorable and persistent of these—the most cheerful, too, and therefore the most hopeful—was Robert E. Rodes, Jr., then a young (36), transplanted New Yorker, Harvard law graduate, and Boston lawyer. He had already come to flourish, in the Aristotelian sense, in the Midwest—in a Catholic university known more for its football players than for its lawyers.

Rodes told me he had come to teaching and to Notre Dame because he wanted …

The Application Of Learning Organisation Theory To The Management Of Change : With Reference To The Engineering Sector, Penelope Ann Gardiner Jan 1998

The Application Of Learning Organisation Theory To The Management Of Change : With Reference To The Engineering Sector, Penelope Ann Gardiner

Plymouth Business School Theses

Recent contributions to the literature on organisations have emphasised the need for constant adaptation to keep pace with the accelerating rate of environmental change. The learning organisation is proposed as one of the most effective means of achieving succesful adaptation through a central focus on learning. This thesis examines the development of the .ideas which have led to the concept of the learning organisation and the application of this concept to the management of change. A number of reasons are proposed for the current adoption of learning organisation theory, these include the restructuring and downsizing of organisations, new Human Resource …
