Compilation Techniques For Out-Of-Core Parallel Computations, M. Kandemir, A. Choudhary, J. Ramanujam, R. Bordawekar

Faculty Publications

The difficulty of handling out-of-core data limits the performance of supercomputers as well as the potential of the parallel machines. Since writing an efficient out-of-core version of a program is a difficult task and virtual memory systems do not perform well on scientific computations, we believe that there is a clear need for compiler directed explicit I/O approach for out-of-core computations. In this paper, we first present an out-of-core compilation strategy based on a disk storage abstraction. Then, we offer a compiler algorithm to optimize locality of disk accesses in out-of-core codes by choosing a good combination of file layouts …

Composition And Change Of Maritime Hammock Flora In East-Central Florida After 20 Years, Donald John Spence Jan 1998

Composition And Change Of Maritime Hammock Flora In East-Central Florida After 20 Years, Donald John Spence

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The vegetation of eight east-central Florida maritime hammocks studied in 1997 were compared to similar data collected over 20 years ago. Study sites are located in the northern half of the Indian River Lagoon system mostly within Canaveral National Seashore and Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. The upland hammock vegetation throughout the state generally has an oak-palm association, but here these species dominate. Results show that sabal palm, live oak, laurel oak, and pignut hickory, the four dominant tree species in 1976-77, are still dominant in 1997; however, there has been a loss in tree species richness. Most shrub species …

Nachusa Grasslands : A Benefit-Cost Analysis, Using The Contingent Valuation Method, James E. Long Jan 1998

Nachusa Grasslands : A Benefit-Cost Analysis, Using The Contingent Valuation Method, James E. Long

Honors Capstones

The purpose of this research paper is to help policy-makers compare environmental interests to non-environmental interests. It involves calculating use and non-use values for a preserve—Nachusa Grasslands. Use values consist of direct values. Non-use values are indirect, option and existence values. The total value, containing only direct, option and existence values, is divided by the total costs of operating the preserve to determine a ratio (Dzurik and Theriaque 1996: 128). This ratio allows pplicy officials to make simple comparisons with similar projects an easy task. Use values are tangible benefits. They represent those qualities that can be directly measured in …

Implementing Geographical Information Systems To Increase Organizations' Operational Efficiency, Jon C. Mantoan Jan 1998

Implementing Geographical Information Systems To Increase Organizations' Operational Efficiency, Jon C. Mantoan

Honors Capstones

Geographical information systems can be used to increase organizations' operational efficiency. The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of what a geographical information system is, what it can be used for, and what is needed to implement GIS technology within an organization. This paper is largely aimed at informing an organizational decision maker with information concerning implementing a geographic information system. This paper discusses many current examples of how organizations use geographical information systems as well as the future in the development and use of geographical information systems. Secondary sources were my main research method for this …

Magnetically Driven Piston Engine, Kevin M. Holly Jr. Jan 1998

Magnetically Driven Piston Engine, Kevin M. Holly Jr.

Honors Capstones

In recent years combustion engines have come under fire for their harmful emissions. Their electrical counterparts however, generally put out less torque than combustion engines. This is mainly because combustion generates more force than electromagnetics does. However, there is another difference between combustion engines and electric motors. Electric motors generate rotary motion while combustion engines convert reciprocating motion into rotary motion. The purpose of this project is to see if magnetics can be used as the driving force in a piston engine, and if the conversion of reciprocating motion into rotary motion gives an advantage or disadvantage to motor performance.

Government And Fertility In Transitional And Post-Transitional Societies, Geoffrey Mcnicoll Jan 1998

Government And Fertility In Transitional And Post-Transitional Societies, Geoffrey Mcnicoll

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

Five categories of possible government influence on a nation’s fertility are explored: (1) through publicly funded programs that explicitly seek to affect family-size outcomes (2) through the legal order and system of public administration (3) through measures that affect economic opportunity, social mobility, and gender relations; (4) through public-sector expenditures and transfer payments keyed to age or family status; and (5) through the state’s supplanting of local beliefs and traditions with the symbols of national identity and through the parallel expansion of cultural frames of reference. Aside from the first of these, intentions to influence fertility are either incidental or …

Taking Superfund Presumptive Remedies To The Brownfields Arena, Debra Schneider Jan 1998

Taking Superfund Presumptive Remedies To The Brownfields Arena, Debra Schneider

Richmond Public Interest Law Review

One of the main problems with CERCLA and brownfields cleanups is the time which such cleanups take to complete. The process of investigating a site through the CERCLA Remedial Investigation/Feasibility Study (RI/FS) process can take several years. The RI/FS process is long, and in the meantime the contamination is often left lurking at the site, harming the environment and human health.

Complexities In Biomedical Decision Making, George P. Smith Ii Jan 1998

Complexities In Biomedical Decision Making, George P. Smith Ii

Richmond Public Interest Law Review

A central focus of medical ethics is directed toward an effort to not only decide, but to make explicit what those duties are or should be for all physicians. The particulars will, of course, fluctuate according to different social structures, differing views of medicine, health, and cure, as well as different capabilities. In a word, medical ethics is situational. One view postulates that medical ethics is essentially ordinary ethics--but applied to medicine. Another view recognizes two elements: dilemma ethics and virtue ethics. Dilemma ethics concerns itself with the moral rightness or wrongness of human actions. Virtue ethics refers to the …

The Evolving Duties Of Trade Unions Toward Their Members: Defining The Duties And Determining The Standards, B. Richard Bell Jan 1998

The Evolving Duties Of Trade Unions Toward Their Members: Defining The Duties And Determining The Standards, B. Richard Bell

LLM Theses

This thesis examines the continuing development of a union's duty to fairly represent its members, the duty owed by a union to its members based upon negligence principles and the recent development of the duty to accommodate in the field of human rights legislation. As the federal government and seven of the ten Canadian provinces moved to codify the union duty of fair representation the lower courts saw a continuing need for judicial supervision in the area of intra-union conflict. However, the Supreme Court of Canada appears to have willingly accepted ouster of the courts' inherent jurisdiction in favour of …

Use Of Discretion In Independent Migrant Selection: A Study Of Canadian Immigration Law, Policy And Practice, Philip Lupul Jan 1998

Use Of Discretion In Independent Migrant Selection: A Study Of Canadian Immigration Law, Policy And Practice, Philip Lupul

LLM Theses

Canadian immigration law has traditionally relied upon broad grants of discretionary authority as a tool for immigrant application processing. Such authority has had two facets--a procedural aspect allowing for flexibility in methods and processes for handling applications, and a substantive aspect relating to actual decision making. This thesis examines such discretion in the particular context of the Independent category of migration that is provided for under the current Immigration Act and Regulations. This thesis argues that discretionary power has recently been significantly affected by two evolving trends. Hampered by fiscal constraints, the bureaucracy has sought to reduce usage of positive …

Visualizing The Law: Methods For Mapping The Legal Landscape And Drawing Analogies, Matthew J. Mccloskey Jan 1998

Visualizing The Law: Methods For Mapping The Legal Landscape And Drawing Analogies, Matthew J. Mccloskey

Washington Law Review

Visualization of information is currently touted in many major disciplines as the best way to manage large amounts of data and make information intuitively accessible. The law suffers from the same information complexity as other disciplines, but has heretofore failed to investigate the possibilities of approaching the law visually. This Comment employs the metaphor of legal map-making as a way to introduce the concept of visualizing the law. It presents two methods for making legal maps. The first is based on visualizing the law's organizing metaphors, using examples of "Evidence as a Bridge" and "Negligence as an Eight-Armed Balancing Scale." …
