My objective is to evaluate whether managers, when executive stock options (ESOs) are part of their compensation, manipulate earnings by using discretionary accruals (DAs). Earnings manipulation requires managers to have some targets or expectations in mind. The target may be in the form of investors' expectations or the managers' own subjective expectations. Although meeting investors' expectations could result in income smoothing, executives might also manipulate earnings to achieve their own subjective expectations for private gains. I develop and test three hypotheses using logistic regression to address the issue of earnings manipulation by executives. The first hypothesis evaluates the likelihood of …

Examination Of Botanical Substructures As Symbolic Communication: The Carved Stone Monuments Of The Cotzumalguapa Nuclear Zone, Guatemala, Debora Claire Kerr

The Cotzumalguapa Nuclear Zone is located on the Pacific slope of Guatemala. A portion of the carved stone monuments associated with this zone exhibits a unique combination of botanical symbols as a concomitant to central portrait figuration. This botanical style, found elsewhere in Mesoamerica, includes leaf, flower, fruit, and complex tabbed speech scroll/vine motifs intertwined with other non-botanical symbols. The resulting style can be interpreted as an "envisioned form" of symbolic communication. This thesis examines, isolates and quantifies the botanical elements, their placement and suggests comparisons with plant species known to facilitate altered state spiritual communication.

This dissertation deals with the non-perturbative finite element methods for stochastic structures and conditional simulation techniques for random fields. Three different non-perturbative finite element schemes have been proposed to compute the first and second moments of displacement responses of stochastic structures. These three methods are based, respectively, on (i) the exact inverse of the global stiffness matrix for simple stochastic structures; (ii) the variational principles for statically-determinate beams; and (iii) the element-level flexibility for general stochastic statically indeterminate structures. Piezoelectric sensors are one of the primary devices used in smart structures because of their capability to act as both, sensors and actuators. A finite element model has been developed to predict elastic behavior and electrical response of laminate composites with embedded piezoelectric sensors. Correlations with experimental results indicate that the model is capable of forecasting the elastic and electrical response of the structure with good accuracy. The important issue of debonding of any of the faces of the sensors is also studied in the current work. Mismatch Negativity (MMN) is a component of the event-related potential (ERP) that is associated with the detection of novel stimuli in one's environment. Naatanen has suggested that a neural template theory provides the best explanation of the mechanism that underlies this psychophysiological phenomenon. The purpose of the present project was to propose that a Hebbian model of cell-assemblies (Hebb, 1949) provides a plausible competing theory of MMN. A Hebbian model is consistent with the evidence provided by imaging studies that demonstrate increased neural efficiency in learning cognitive (as opposed to skilled motor) tasks and with recent animal studies in an …

The Book of Esther is written in Hebrew in the Old Testament and in Greek in the Apocrypha. Although the Book of Esther is written as an historical account, no evidence has surfaced to prove its historical authenticity. An analysis of the story indicates that it is modeled after ancient paganistic rites. Esther herself appears to be modeled after a Great Goddess who reigned supreme over a matriarchal society more than 10,000 years ago. In this dissertation, identification and approximation of one-dimensional (1-D) and two-dimensional (2-D) recursive digital filters are addressed. In the identification phase, a novel Neural Network (NN) structure is proposed which provides the state-space model of 1-D filters based upon input-output data. The state space identification technique is also extended to 2-D digital filters and several comparison studies are performed. Much of what we currently know about consumers' reaction to persuasive attempts (advertisements) comes from studying mass media communications which are largely one-way and image-centered. Internet-based advertising is neither given the focus on information and the ability to narrowly target such appeals (sites), as in direct marketing advertising. The purpose of this study was to develop a theory of survivorship in long-term breast cancer patients, and a subsequent educational program to assist health care practitioners to guide these survivors. Seven women who had survived breast cancer for at least 10 years, were interviewed over a twelve month period. This qualitative study used Glaser & Strauss's grounded theory method to generate the process of survivorship for these women. The emergent core category, "life's journey" was characterized by two core variables, "caring with self" and "completing the grieving process". In 1936, approximately three thousand Americans volunteered to aid Spain fight the Fascist rebellion of Fransisco Franco, and his German and Italian allies. About thirty percent of the volunteers were Jewish--a ratio so large as to be statistically improbable. Why were so many Jews impelled to go to Spain to fight for the Spanish Republic? Many were Communists, Socialists, unionists, and assorted antifascists, determined to stop the fascist threat in Europe. It was also seen as a chance to fight Hitler with bullets, not only words. Investigations into coastal erosion and accretion characteristically examine changes in shoreline position to determine predictive rates of change. Results of such investigations normally focus on the applicability of mathematical equations or statistical techniques to describe the nearshore sedimentary environment. This thesis integrates various methods of shoreline analysis and extends the focus to include coastal morphology and morphodynamics. Coastal geomorphology is often based on analysis of coastal forms using cross-shore profiles and interpretation of planforms from aerial photographs and other remotely sensed data. Periodic topographic and nearshore bathymetric surveys constitute spatio-temporal data which permit assessment of coastal erosion and accretion. Such …

A study was performed for the purpose of developing a non-destructive method to evaluate corrosion damaged pre-stressing steel in jacketed concrete piles by using a cover meter. The procedure first involved taking cover meter readings with the pile jacket in place. Subsequently, a portion of the jacket was removed and tendon diameter measurements were taken. A relation for normalized tendon diameter as a function of normalized cover was determined, where normalized cover increased with a decrease in normalized tendon diameter. Vortex methods are grid-free; therefore, their use avoids a number of shortcomings of Eulerian, grid-based numerical methods for solving high Reynolds number flow problems. These include such problems as poor resolution and numerical diffusion. In vortex methods, the continuous vorticity field is discretized into a collection of Lagrangian elements, known as vortex elements. Vortex elements are free to move in the flow field which they create. The velocity field induced by these vortex elements is a solution to the Navier-Stokes equation, and in principle the method is suitable for high Reynolds number flows. The interaction of rotor turbulence with the stator is currently believed to be the predominant mechanism of noise radiation from turbofans in aircraft engines. This thesis presents a general method to compute unsteady 2-D potential flows past a cascade of airfoils. The procedure uses source and vortex distributions on the surface of the airfoils, creation of wakes downstream of the airfoils and non-linear convection of the perturbed flow. A serious drawback of these techniques is that the concepts and notations used are not rigorously defined. The survival of rat retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) after axotomy has been shown to be enhanced by Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF). It was, therefore, of interest to determine whether previously observed changes in the differential regulation of fast axonally transported proteins (FTPs) occur in rat RGCs during the early response to axotomy or whether such changes are obviated by the action of BDNF at the cell body level. It was of further interest to determine whether these regeneration-associated changes are sustained during the period of BDNF-enhanced cell survival. Surface-modified alumina containing covalently-bonded p-aminophenyl groups was prepared by refluxing chromatographic grade alumina with p-aminophenylphosphonic acid in n-butanol. The resulting material, p-aminophenylalumina (PAPA), was evaluated for use as a stationary phase in high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). When used with mobile phases consisting of acetonitrile and water, retention of solutes on the PAPA phase exhibited normal phase behavior, as evidenced by the increases in solute retention times with increasing percentages of acetonitrile. Excellent separations of carbohydrate mixtures were obtained on the PAPA stationary phase. Chinua Achebe is one of Africa's most renowned writers. However, the excellence of his work is compromised by the assumptions of Western poetics, that is, mimesis. European critics contend African writing suffers from the prevalent use of proverbs, and obtrusive authorship, among others. But, Earl Miner, through his discourse on the poetics of the affective-expressive, challenges mimesis. He shows that only Western poetics is rooted in drama, all others are rooted in lyric. This fact reverses the table. African writing, rather than being an oddity, represents a global poetics. Miner shows new ways of analyzing literature by incorporating monogatari, re-evaluating …

The purpose of this study of policymaking on violence against women in the United States was to examine beliefs about the causes of violence against women through alternative theoretical lenses in order to compare competing theories of problem definition. An initial multidisciplinary review of the roots of the problem indicated that public policy on violence against women, specifically the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) of 1994, was limited in its response. The poema en prosa originates in the Romantic subversion of discursive boundaries, as a problematic genre that foregrounds its theoretical self-questioning. Through its confrontation of prose and poetry, and the paradoxical affirmation of a form that results from the dialogic struggle between them, the poema en prosa is able to create an alternative space for Spanish American writers conditioned by a colonial history of literary borrowings from other traditions. This counter-discursive entity attracted turn-of-the-century modernistas such as Julian del Casal and Ruben Dario, as did the prose experiments of Jose Marti Delineating an autochthonous discursive identity for Spanish America through …
