The poema en prosa originates in the Romantic subversion of discursive boundaries, as a problematic genre that foregrounds its theoretical self-questioning. Through its confrontation of prose and poetry, and the paradoxical affirmation of a form that results from the dialogic struggle between them, the poema en prosa is able to create an alternative space for Spanish American writers conditioned by a colonial history of literary borrowings from other traditions. This counter-discursive entity attracted turn-of-the-century modernistas such as Julian del Casal and Ruben Dario, as did the prose experiments of Jose Marti Delineating an autochthonous discursive identity for Spanish America through …

Meristic and morphometric characteristics as well as isoelectric focusing and two-dimensional electrophoretic protein banding patterns of Scomberomorus cavalla were investigated in an attempt to find a technique to adequately identify Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico migratory groups, respectively, in the southeast Florida mixing zone. Data were collected from king mackerel from three locations: Riviera Beach, Palm Beach County; St. Petersburg, Pinellas County; and Panama City, Bay County; Florida. Morphometric and electrophoretic differences in samples from St. Petersburg, may indicate that the fish collected in this region constitute a separate stock. Mobile systems frequently change their point of attachment to the network. Mobile computing systems also need to communicate with the existing pool of information and file servers. Digital orthophoto quadrangle quarter (DOQQ) is a new type of imagery. The DOQQ is a product of the United States Geological Survey, which has many uses. The spectral and spatial qualities of a DOQQ are equal to and surpass the qualities of traditional satellite imagery. The purpose of this study was to determine if student athletes at an urban university who participated in a supplemental multiple modalities sensitive instructional program experienced greater academic success at the end of their first semester than a control group of student athletes who received traditional instruction in Introduction to Academic Skills (SLS 1501). The subjects were drawn from the 1997 Summer Orientation and Academic review (S.O.A.R.) enrollment at Florida Atlantic University. Dogmatism is an uncritical, rigid way of thinking that correlates strongly with prejudice. Prejudice is an attitude, usually unfavorable, toward individuals or groups, arrived at through an uncritical thought process and a disregard of the facts. Dogmatism, because of its connection with prejudice, vitiates students' chances for learning. Dogmatism in teachers creates an inequitable distribution of education to the extent that marginalized minority students are shortchanged educational opportunities. This study was designed to examine absenteeism rates for elementary and middle school teachers for 1996-97 to determine if a relationship exists between absenteeism and student achievement, as measured by a standardized norm-referenced reading test. The study examined the attendance records of 727 fourth and 154 seventh grade teachers who taught a reading or language arts class and 18,802 students in grades four and seven. The variables of teacher years of experience, student grade level, and student gender were added to the multiple regression model in order to ascertain whether or not teacher absences made a significant contribution to the …

This study examined the temporal structure of children's study behaviors on a sort/recall task. Forty-two fifth-grade children were given six sort/recall trials, each consisting of a two-minute study period followed by a recall assessment. Three trials used the same word list on each trial, while three trials used different word lists on each trial. Half of the participants received the different word list trials first while the order was reversed for the remaining participants. Results were analyzed for differences between recall groups, type of word list used, and presentation order of the trials. High recallers demonstrated stronger temporal patterns of …

Rapid social and economic changes are modifying health care delivery systems and health care financing. These changes require that primary care physicians develop new collaborative approaches to patient care, including a reassessment of relationships with other primary care providers, particularly nurse practitioners. The purpose of this research was to explore and define what constitutes a successful collaborative practice. Open-ended, interactive interviews were conducted with three dyads of physician - nurse practitioner in the ambulatory care setting. Data analysis using the grounded theory method revealed six key elements associated with effective collaborative practice: Communication, competence, autonomy, coordination, trust and personality. Through careful selection of historical events and linguistic transformations, Ana Lydia Vega, born in 1946, tries to capture the essence of a diverse array of Puerto Rican figures. She bases her fiction on historical facts, cultural aspects, and linguistic peculiarities. Her writing blends these three aspects; however, the use of the unique Puerto Rican verbal expression is the foremost tool of her conceptualization. Within his own intellectual context, John Locke's argument for the people's natural right of resistance in the Second Treatise of Government was profoundly original. But he derived its conceptual foundation and rhetorical ornament from the six political texts immediately available to him when he wrote the Second Treatise in 1681-82. Locke based his "very Strange Doctrine" of popular resistance to political tyranny upon the natural right of rational individuals to judge and punish criminals in the state of nature. Textual analysis demonstrates that none of his six texts presented this argument. Locke did, however base his resistance theory upon such …

In this article Professor Roithmayr attempts to develop in the context of law school admissions a theoretical argument from deconstruction to support the radical critique of merit. The radical critique, espoused primarily by Critical Race Theorists and radical feminists, argues that merit standards disproportionately exclude white women and people of color because merit standards were developed by dominant social groups, in ways that have disproportionately benefited their descendants. A New Options Theory For Risk Multipliers Of Attorney's Fees In Federal Civil Rights Litigation, Peter H. Huang

Given the importance of private enforcement of federal civil rights laws, Congress and the courts have attempted to encourage plaintiffs' attorneys to accept meritorious civil rights cases through fee shifting and risk multipliers. Recently, however, the Supreme Court has essentially prohibited the use of risk multipliers, thus undercompensating attorneys for the risk of losing civil rights actions and discouraging the filing of such cases. In this Article, Professor Huang develops a new options-based theory of calculating attorney's fees. This Article addresses the decision by the drafters of the revised Uniform Partnership Act (1996) (RUPA) to reduce the traditional defenses available to partnerships in apparent authority cases. RUPA eliminated the requirement that apparent authority claims against a partnership be based on the claimant's reasonable expectations. Under RUPA a partnership is liable for a partner's unauthorized act even when the claimant had reason to know the act was unauthorized. A defense based on the claimant's knowledge is effective only when the claimant actually knows--is cognitively aware--that the act was unauthorized. Until recently, few have questioned the notion that the separation of uses in land use zoning is inherently correct. Many observers of the city are now suggesting that zoning, as it has been practiced in this country over the last 80 years, has created cities that are fractured and function poorly. Others propose that zoning should be reconsidered as a remedy for urban dysfunction. They suggest that the whole notion of zoning be rethought.

In her first novel, The Voyage Out, Virginia Woolf captures the complexity of human relationships and the difficulty of establishing meaningful connections with people. Her main character, Rachel Vinrace, struggles with these issues as she embarks on a discovery of self. Rachel's journey begins with a disrupted childhood, moves through her battle to regain a sense of belonging, and ends with her eventual withdrawal from the human struggle, thereby recreating herself and transcending the limitations of society and relationships. The purpose of this study was to identify how various student, school, and staff predictors related to the academic performance of Mexican American fourth graders in selected schools as evidenced by their scores on the Florida Writes Assessment as well as on norm referenced achievement tests in reading comprehension and math applications. Three null hypotheses were tested to show if there was a correlation between predictors and these criterion variables: writing skills, reading comprehension, and math applications.
