Ethical and moral issues facing potential organ donors, their families or agents, and the medical community are created and driven by the rapidly expanding demand for the life-giving resource (ever more successfully utilized)--a factor coupled with the persistently scarce and relatively constant low level of supply. The serious nature of the shortage of compatible organs has prompted medical, ethical, and legal scholars to consider alternatives to altruistic donation. This approach has never been able to keep up with the demand--indeed, it falls further behind each year. One set of alternatives involves (currently banned) financial incentives for organ donors. An unprecedented combination of imagination and capital resulted in the most profound, and profane, achievement in modern history--the atom bomb--but the strategies that empowered its development caused inestimable suffering in peacetime America. Discrete practices of secrecy, media manipulation, and the devaluation of scientific opinion evolved and coalesced during the cold war, permeating institutions and pre-empting any protection of the unwary from exposure to radioactive fallout. The Easter Rising of 1916 is often considered to mark the end of the colonial period in the territory now called the Republic of Ireland. Because for centuries preceding the Rising women were aligned with mythological and Christian images that glorified their saintly and maternal “nature,”it seemed the rising would mark a period during which women would no longer need to represent the motherland and might assume some degree of autonomy in Irish society. The primary function of the human placenta is to ensure an optimal environment for fetal growth and development. Nutrients, endogenous substances and xenobiotics enter the placenta via the maternal circulation. The placenta possesses the ability to metabolize a number of xenobiotics and endogenous compounds by processes (cytochrome P450 enzymes and/or glutathione conjugation pathways) similar to those in the liver. Although the metabolites produced are usually inactive, reactive or toxic metabolites may also be generated. Therefore, changes in placental enzymatic function could alter fetal exposure to these reactive/toxic metabolites. Animal and in vivo human studies suggest diabetes alters the liver's xenobiotic …

This paper describes the refinement and testing of the Student Evaluation of Clinical Education Environment (SECEE) inventory, an instrument designed to measure nursing student perceptions of the clinical learning environment. Although a quality student clinical experience is considered critical to nursing education, no comprehensive instruments measuring the clinical learning environment have been published. The SECEE inventory contains 29 forced-choice items divided among four scales: Communication and Feedback, Learning Opportunities, Learning Support, and Department Atmosphere. Items were included based on nursing students and faculty input, a review of the literature and sample clinical agency contracts, and data resulting from administration of …

The purpose of this study was to learn what might have contributed to the academic success of Puerto Rican undergraduates. The investigation centered around the perceptions of the participants about the role and significance of socio-economic status, compatibility of the home and school environments, bilingualism, encouragement, and motivation. A qualitative design was used. Ten participants of Puerto Rican origin, undergraduate students at a major university in the northeast were interviewed at their university. The data was recorded on audio cassette tapes. The answers to the questionnaire suggested that the participants had families who valued education regardless of their socio-economic status. …

It is known that toothbrushes can harbor microorganisms. Researchers suggest replacing toothbrushes immediately following illness to reduce the possibility of microorganisms causing disease.1 The continuous use of a microbial-contaminated toothbrush may be potentially harmful to its user, especially if the user is medically compromised or immunosuppressed. Gingival irritation created during improper toothbrushing technique may result in portals of entry for bacteria to be introduced into the systemic circulation. 1. Cover crops and/or resident ground vegetation have been used in California vineyards to increase the number of predators and decrease the number of pestiferous herbivores. The most common resident predators in vineyards are spiders (Araneae). Several observational studies suggest that the addition of cover crops results in an increase in spider density and a decrease in insect pest densities. 2. To test experimentally the effects of cover crops and/or resident ground vegetation (hereafter collectively referred to as ground cover) on spider populations, a 3-year study was undertaken in a commercial vineyard. Jean M. Auel's popular novels, The Clan of the Cave Bear and Valley of the Horses, are examined via theories of political thought (history, economics, power), feminist theory (oppression, sex/gender roles), and popular literature's (genre) appeals to various 80s readership communities. Chapter Two draws from historical interests in women's myth to show that 70-80s religious and anthropo-archeological revisionism promote an 80s goddess theory in support of 70- 80s feminism; nonetheless, from a 90s vantage, Dani-goddess theorizing is problematized by universalism, teleology, and gender stereotyping. This study attempts to understand more about how to quantitatively assess longitudinal change within the Transtheoretical Model applied to the area of condom use among college students. A total of 215 sexually active male and female undergraduate students completed both assessments one month apart. Measurement development was conducted on the Condom Use URICA scale, which was then used in a cluster analysis. A four cluster solution was reliably replicated across two random samples (R²=.99), and the clusters were then examined in terms of their external validity using MANOVAs. This Article focuses on the role of conscious and unconscious racial bias in the delivery of care; it does not begin to address the larger issue of inadequate access to care at the outset. Improving access to health care for minorities will undoubtedly have a positive effect on these groups' overall health status; however, to the extent that racial bias in the delivery of care exists apart from problems of inadequate access, the disparity in health status between whites and African Americans will no doubt continue.

Ultraviolet radiation (UVR) is produced by many sources, and for most people the sun is their main source of exposure. In the occupational environment there are also many artificial sources, of which welding arcs are the predominant and most intense. This dissertation represents a synthesis and interpretation of information (both empirical and review) that is contained in five journal articles. These articles address personal exposure, evaluation and control of UVR from both natural and artificial sources, and in particular exposure to UVR from welding arcs.
