This following study serves as an attempt to apply theoretical questions to the phenomenon of striptease. I argue that striptease can be more fully understood as an act guided by the rules of performance. Strippers, and to a lesser extent the audience, can then be seen as actors employing a fantasy phase to sustain their respective roles within the charade of performance sex. Strippers and audiences are also players within the concept of performance itself, meaning they are simultaneously subject to and authors of the phenomenon. Using a biosocial approach, I explore the psychological, cultural, and physiological, etc., cues that …

The Alpha group is a faction of the white supremacy movement that has established a virtual presence in cyberspace. Rhetorical strategies of agitation are practiced by the Alpha group on the World Wide Web in an effort to encourage visiting avatars to join the white supremacy movement. This study explores the rhetorical strategies of power and promulgation which Alpha uses in cyberspace. Analysis of Alpha's digital discourse provide an opportunity to understand and evaluate the unique potentials that information technologies such as the World Wide Web bring to the rhetorical environment.

Phosphotriesterase catalyzes the hydrolysis of a wide range of organophosphate insecticides such as paraoxon and parathion and nerve toxins such as soman and sarin. This project resulted in the development of novel phosphotriesterase enzyme assays to measure paraoxon and other representatives of the organophosphate pesticides. The assay is based on a substrate-dependent change in pH at the local vicinity of the enzyme. This enzyme, which was labeled with fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC), was immobilized on polymethylmethacrylate beads and the pH change is monitored through the pH-sensitive quantum yield of FITC. Analytes were measured using a KinExA fluorescence analyzer. This assay can …

Children with anorexia nervosa have often been overlooked or misdiagnosed because of the lack of understanding and clarity surrounding early onset. This study was aimed to help clarify ambiguities by exploring the similarities and differences of early- and later-onset anorexia nervosa. Results from case studies of a female child, adolescent, and adult diagnosed with anorexia nervosa are presented. Findings from the case studies indicate several similarities between the two onsets such as comparable demographic characteristics, diagnostic features, symptoms of associated mental disorders, personality characteristics, and etiological factors. During Pleistocene time, Coal Valley, Nevada, was situated between a pluvial climatic zone to the north and a non-pluvial climactic zone to the south. The Coal Lake section represents {dollar}>{dollar}20,000 years of continuous deposition, recording a saline lake phase (Early Coal Lake) present since at least 32,000 BP, evolving to a freshwater lake (Coal Lake Intermediate) {dollar}\sim{dollar}28,000 BP. Maximum lake development (290 km{dollar}\sp2{dollar} in area) was within 2000 years of {dollar}\sim{dollar}20,000 BP, and was probably persistent through deglaciation. Ostracode ecology suggests that water salinity varied little through time, which may be indicative of consistently low ambient temperatures, high precipitation …

A job-related, non-discriminatory Physical Abilities Test (PAT) was developed for the Nevada Test Site (NTS) firefighters. The PAT was developed through firefighter interviews and tabulated call responses between 1990 and 1995. The interviews and task history yielded a job analysis from which six routine, physically demanding tasks were identified and developed into a test battery. Eleven NTS firefighters tested the proposed PAT for reliability. Subjects were timed on the six tasks. The total time for completion, including the change from bunker gear to wildland gear, was also recorded. An Intra-class Reliability coefficient was calculated for each task and total time. …

A macroscopic analysis of 604 skeletal remains was undertaken at the Museo Arqueologico de San Miguel de Azapa (MASMA) in order to ascertain the rates of porotic hyperostosis in the prehistoric populations of northern Chile. Porotic hyperostosis has been recognized as being a useful indicator of nutritional stress, in particular, iron-deficiency anemia. In the Americas, this pathology has primarily been associated with maize-dependency and pathogen load. Contrary to expectations, results reveal that pre-agricultural populations have 93% of porotic hyperostosis while the agricultural populations show a rate of 66%. This paper examines physico-chemical and biological properties and processes in four Southern Nevada wastewater pond systems located in Alamo, Beatty, Blue Diamond, and Searchlight. Pond parameters examined include pond dimensions, hydraulic retention time (HRT), alkalinity, pH, chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), dissolved oxygen (DO), phosphorus, nitrates, and ammonia. Fish assemblages in 22 pools were sampled over the summer of 1997 in the North Fork of the Virgin River, Zion National Park, Utah, to assess effects of recreational activities on native fish communities. Pools experiencing high levels of wading and float tubing contained altered population distributions and altered community structure as compared to pools generally lacking recreational activities. In addition, pools disturbed by recreation had lower abundance of desert sucker (Catostomus clarki) and lower community diversity than pools without recreation. Food availability measured as algal biomass and macroinvertebrate drift density was similar among all pools, but abundance of larval …

The otherness of cyberspace manifests itself through virtual transient worlds, reconstituting the stable human subject in a radically interactive electronic medium. A home advantage in sports has been well documented. However, little research has been conducted to determine exactly why this home advantage exists. This study will attempt to examine the relationship between travel (i.e. number of miles traveled, number of time zones crossed, direction of travel, and game number at home or on the road) and the performance of professional baseball teams (i.e. won/loss, runs scored, hits, errors committed, double plays executed, and runs allowed). Minority over-representation in the juvenile justice system is a national concern. Research in this area is limited, however, there is indication that minority over-representation, particularly of African-American youth, seems to occur at various stages of juvenile justice processing. It is my belief that once arrested, minority youth are more likely to be certified as an adult than white youth. This paper examines the certification process in Clark County, Nevada, by studying a random sample of 200 cases. The results suggest that this theory holds true. This thesis focuses on "intercultural" marriages between Chinese immigrant men and Northern Paiute women who lived on or around the Walker River Reservation between 1860 and 1920, the years in which census manuscript records have been made public. Because of federal, state, and local laws, Chinese men sometimes sought marriage partners among Native American women because these relationships were not banned by law. Based upon federal, state, and local archives, census data, and oral interviews of descendants of Northern Paiute and Chinese "marriages," some insight into the reasons for these marriages have been ascertained from the perspective of descendants presently …

Physical activity has been identified as a major deterrent of many diseases, and is one of our nation's top priorities for health promotion. The purpose of this research study was to determine whether personal factors and perceptions of the benefits of and barriers to exercise, as selected factors of Nola Pender's Revised Health Promotion Model (1996), predict exercise patterns in a convenient sample of A.D.N. and B.S.N. nursing students (N = 311). The 1971 Wild Horse and Burro Act (PL 92-195) charged the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) with the management and protection of wild horses and burros on public lands. The implementation of the Act was remiss in failing to recognize the limitation of expertise within the Bureau in carrying out its new responsibilities. The lack of specialists in horse and burro management led to an inconclusive protection policy that consequently has generated conflict and controversy. Cancer occurs when normal cells fail to die in response to various cell death signals. Normal eukaryotic cells exhibit two major forms of cell death--Necrosis and Apoptosis. Apoptosis can be triggered in cells by various agents. Studies have shown that an elevated amount of Hsp 27 protects cells from apoptosis induced by Sodium Butyrate. In this study, we treated estrogen receptor negative human breast cancer cells with apoptotic inducers such as Sodium Butyrate, Staurosporine, Vitamin E Succinate and Cycloheximide. Maize cobs from Black Dog Cave, a Virgin Anasazi Cave site near modern Moapa, Nevada, were measured for twelve morphological characters. Plants, ears, and tassels from living maize plants grown for this study at Las Vegas, Nevada were measured and compared quantitatively to four sets of data: the maize from the cave, a mathematical synthesis of archaeological maize from sites all over the American Southwest, quantifications during living maize races of the Southwest, and statistics from isozyme studies. Toads hydrate from standing water or moist substrates by osmotic absorbtion across the ventral skin. On land toads adopt a distinctive posture called the water absorption response (WR) to maximize contact with the substrate and facilitate water absorption. Experiments using hydration behavior on moist substrates and rehydration rate in standing water or salt solutions in dehydrated Red-spotted toads (Bufo punctatus) were used to demonstrate that: (1) toads can distinguish among NaCl concentrations, (2) NaCl facilitates water uptake across the skin, and (3) transport of the chloride anion facilitates sodium uptake and affects sodium detection by the toad. Yucca brevifolia is distributed throughout a broad range of plant communities. Open substrate dominates the study areas, however a large majority of Y. brevifolia seedlings were found growing under the canopy of other woody shrubs. This pattern of recruitment did not vary by canyon or elevation. Thirty-five species of perennial shrubs were identified in the study areas and sixteen of these were found in association with at least one Y. brevifolia seedling. However, four shrubs were found in a nurse relationship with Y. brevifolia above the frequency predicted by either their canopy area or numerical dominance. The research indicates there …

I hypothesized that experimental elimination of blood flow via ligation of the conotruncus arteriosus would cause a cessation of blood vessel development and even vessel regression. India ink, injected to highlight the vasculature, had no effect on blood flow. Embryos were divided into ligated, sham, and control groups. After ligature placement and 6 hr. reincubation, KCl, added topically induced cardiac arrest. The diameters of the anterior cardinal vein, anterior vitelline vein, vitelline artery, and vitelline vein were not statistically different from sham and control values. Eye diameter increased equally in the presence and absence of blood flow. These results demonstrate …

General descriptions of courtship behavior have been published for the desert tortoise, Gopherus agassizii. However, the amount and sources of variation in courtship behaviors have not been documented. I examined courtship behavior by analyzing videotaped interactions between captive males and females. I calculated duration of three courtship phases (trailing, subduing, and mounting) and quantified the number and rate of rams and bites. Male courtship behavior changed with increased courtship experience, and smaller males showed more variable behavior than larger males. Larger males bit small females at higher rates than did smaller males. Courtship varied in response to female size. Large …
