One of the primary obstacles to understanding why some oyster populations are successful and others are not is the complex interaction of environmental variables with oyster physiology and with such population variables as the rates of recruitment and juvenile mortality. A numerical model is useful in investigating how population structure originates out of this complexity. We have monitored a suite of environmental conditions over an environmental gradient to document the importance of short time-scale variations in such variables as food supply, turbidity, and salinity. Then, using a coupled oyster disease population dynamics model, we examine the need for short rime-scale …

Pocket gophers are medium-sized fossorial (burrowing) rodents, which have external fur-lined pouches located on the outside of their mouths. They use the pouches to carry food, hence the name "pocket" gopher. There are 35 species of pocket gophers in North and South America. Pocket gophers are sometimes confused with moles because of their similar burrowing activities. Moles, however, are smaller and lack cheek pouches.

In sum, this collection of essays offers a thorough exploration of state-based, single-issue environmental agreements. As such agreements presently comprise the overwhelming majority of our attempts to regulate transnational environmental problems, this volume provides a comprehensive treatment of the subject. A follow-up volume might wish to analyze more fully the role of private actors and macro-linkages as potential complements to traditional agreements. Such departures from state-based analysis could lead to a more challenging rethinking of international governance theory.

Dolphin-Safe Tuna: The Tide Is Changing, Kristin L. Stewart

Ms. Stewart reviews the history of the tuna-dolphin contro­versy in the Eastern Pacific Ocean. She explores international agreements and U.S. law that mandate dolphin-safe tuna fish­ing practices. Finally, Ms. Stewart reviews the steps taken by the United States, including embargoes against other coun­tries' tuna, to force tuna-fishing nations to use dolphin-safe practices.

Section 870 of the Restatement (Second) of Torts provides a method by which a court might extend private intentional tort rights to nonhuman animal plaintiffs. Given our current scien­tific and experiential understanding of many species, com­bined with existing court procedures to ease administrability, such an extension of tort law is mandated.

Composition And Change Of Maritime Hammock Flora In East-Central Florida After 20 Years, Donald John Spence

The vegetation of eight east-central Florida maritime hammocks studied in 1997 were compared to similar data collected over 20 years ago. Study sites are located in the northern half of the Indian River Lagoon system mostly within Canaveral National Seashore and Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. The upland hammock vegetation throughout the state generally has an oak-palm association, but here these species dominate. Results show that sabal palm, live oak, laurel oak, and pignut hickory, the four dominant tree species in 1976-77, are still dominant in 1997; however, there has been a loss in tree species richness. The problem of "decision making in the face of uncertainty" is how to regulate on the basis of incomplete information that has significant potential to be inaccurate. My primary goal is to clarify some aspects of such decision-making through surveying types of uncertainty inherent in information. I present a taxonomy for kinds of inherent uncertainty - a classification and description of the "faces"of uncertainty. A second goal is to identify which kinds of uncertainty can and cannot now be measured quantitatively.

A contextual assumption is that we need to evaluate decision rules for dealing with faces of uncertainty. As a …

The Associative Learning Capabilities Of The Parasitoid Wasp, Nasonia Vitripennis (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae), Sarah E. Oliai

A parasitoid that can learn cues associated with the host microenvironment should have an increased chance of future host location and thereby increase its reproductive success. This study examines associative learning in response to simultaneous exposure to the colors yellow and blue in mated females of the parasitoid wasp Nasonia vitripennis. Preference was measured as the proportion of time spent on a color. When trained with one color rewarded with hosts and honey and the other unrewarded, females showed an increase in preference for the rewarded color with increasing number of training days (1,3, and 7 days).
