Selective mutism is characterized by the appropriate use of language in certain settings, with a consistent lack of language use elsewhere. The child is often viewed as shy, and it is assumed that the shyness is temporary and will be outgrown. The purpose of this paper is to explore the problem of selective mutism in school aged children for whom silence may extend for many months or even years. Selective mutism will be further defined, and frequency, duration, and a summary of treatment methods will be discussed. Hematite And Calcite Coatings On Fossil Vertebrates, B. A.O. Huiming, Paul L. Koch, Robert P. Hepple

Hematite coatings are common on vertebrate fossils from Paleocene/Eocene paleosol deposits in the Bighorn Basin, Wyoming. In general, hematite coatings are found only on fossils and are limited to soils exhibiting hydromorphic features and moderate maturity. Pétrographie and isotopic evidence suggests that hematite and micritic calcite formed at nearly the same time in a pedogenic environment, whereas sparry calcite formed later at greater burial depths. The parent material of paleosols is rich in iron, supplying an ample source of iron for hematite formation. Decomposition of animal tissues around bones may enhance the weathering of iron-bearing minerals in soils surrounding carcasses, …

Linear Theory Of The Effect Of A Sloping Boundary On Circulation In A Homogeneous Laboratory Model, Ross W. Griffiths, George Veronis

Journal of Marine Research

Griffiths and Veronis (1997) reported observations of the effect of a sloping boundary on the circulation in a sliced-cylinder model of wind-driven circulation in which the flow is driven by the relative rotation of the top lid. A summary of observations for the nearly linear case is given here along with the linear analysis based on the theory of a rotating homogeneous fluid. Good agreement between the two is obtained, and the (straightforward) physics of the system is described.

Topography And Barotropic Transport Control By Bottom Friction, William K. Dewar

The problem of the stratified general circulation in the presence of topography is revisited. The novel effect examined here is that of localized, but large-scale, topographic anomalies on the wind-driven circulation, a problem whose relevance is found in the occurrence of many such features in the open ocean. Using the classical methods of homogenization theory, it is argued that the barotropic transport near topography can come under the direct control of bottom friction. Geostrophic transports of the western boundary currents at the Brazil/Malvinas Confluence in the South Atlantic Ocean are estimated from the data set of the Confluence 3 cruise (February 1990) with a nonlinear inverse model which takes into consideration density, current meter and wind data, and dynamical (planetary vorticity, Ekman, mass conservation) constraints. Inversions are carried out with two initial different levels of no motion at 1500 m (Case A) and at 3000 m (Case B). We test whether organic matter degradability, mixing activity, and total sediment mineralization can be estimated by inversion of a coupled nonlinear numerical steady-state diagenetic model. We use a single data set comprising oxygen, nitrate, ammonium and organic carbon versus depth profiles from a slope station in the Goban Spur area (1034 m, Northeast Atlantic). Based on an extensive sensitivity analysis, it appears that (1) when using all data, the total mineralization rates can be determined with reasonable precision; bioturbation and degradability are less well constrained and (2) total mineralization rates can be determined based on nitrate and oxygen profiles only; …

Off northeastern Taiwan, the collision between the Kuroshio Current (KC) and the East China Sea (ECS) shelf forms a branch current (Kuroshio Branch Current) on the shelf, and the counterclockwise deflection of the subsurface Kuroshio water annually generates a cyclonic eddy, about 70 km in diameter, over the shelf-slope in summer. In this study, the total suspended matter collected from varying water depths over the eddy during August 1994 has been analyzed for Al, which is used as an indicator element to trace lithogenic particle transport. The activities of infaunal macrobenthos strongly influence the pathways, rates, and extent of organic matter remineralization and associated reactions in marine sediments. Solute transport during irrigation is a particularly important process that stimulates microbial activity and net remineralization, both within and adjacent to the bioturbated zone. Part of the stimulation proximal to the bioturbated zone is due to redox oscillation and oxidant supply during transport, but part of both the near and far-field effects are a result of other factors. This paper examines the kinematics of the horizontal motion induced in marine plankton which undergo diel vertical migration (DVM) in oscillatory tidal currents with depth varying amplitude and phase. Particular attention is paid to the transport-producing effects of DVM in shallow, stratified seas where frictional decoupling associated with a reduction in the vertical eddy viscosity in the pycnocline can cause abrupt changes in tidal phase across the pycnocline. In M₂-period tidal currents, horizontal displacements of up to 5 upper layer tidal excursions can be produced over a 15-day cycle and in S₂-period currents, net unidirectional horizontal …

The energy conversion ratio, γ, is shown to be bounded below by 0 and above by 1/2 in the two-dimensional linear geostrophic adjustment of a continuously stably stratified, incompressible, inviscid non-Boussinesq fluid. ''Two-dimensional'' refers to problems in which the initial isopycnal displacement field is an arbitrary function of the vertical (parallel to the rotation axis) and a single horizontal coordinate. By using Fourier analysis techniques, the paper also identified classes of initial isopycnal displacement profiles for which the adjustment process leads to γ > 1/3. Finally, an expression for γ is derived when the initial isopycnal displacement profile is three dimensional.

Three major hypotheses regarding physical activity, stress and self-concept in adolescent females were tested using 214 high school students as subjects. These hypotheses generated four predictions: 1) Females who are more physically active will report that experienced stressful events are less upsetting than will females participating in less activity; 2) Females who are more physically active will have higher physical ability self-concept scores than those females who are less physically active; and 3) Certain factors such as age and physical ability self-concept are more likely to result in girls' participation in physical activity; 4) Certain factors such as age and …

Accurate, finescale absorption profiles of colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) were measured in coastal waters. CDOM has also been called Gelbstoff, gilvin, yellow substances, hurnic substances, and "unknown chromophores". The processes responsible for the observed temporal and spatial variability were investigated. The sources of CDOM were diluted inputs from the terrestrial biosphere and in situ biological processes. The primary sink was photodegradation.

The finescale distribution of inherent optical properties was measured with a WET Labs ac-9. The ac-9 is an innovative in situ absorption and attenuation meter with a precision about ± 0.001 m-1 in the raw signal. A pressurized …

Persistent hypoglycaemia in infancy is most commonly caused by hyperinsulinism. A case is reported of the somatic loss of the maternal 11p in an insulin secreting focal adenoma in association with a germline SUR-1mutation on the paternal allele in a baby boy with hyperinsulinism diagnosed at 49 days old. A reduction to homozygosity of an SUR-1 mutation is proposed as a critical part of the cause of focal hyperinsulinism.
