For a long time, the central focus of anthropology has been on the study of the so-called traditional societies. However, with the transformation of those societies into "ethnicized" groups within state systems, anthropologists have had to rethink their concepts, theories, and methods. They have had to deal with, among others things, issues of cultural difference, cultural boundaries, and cultural movements. This article looks retrospectively at certain changes that have taken place in anthropology especially with regard to the study of ethnicity.

Various scholars have treated ethnic newspapers in the United States as if they all have evolved from an immigrant press.(i) While one may accept their analysis of the functions of the ethnic press, there is a substantial and qualitative difference between newspapers that were built on an immigration base and those that developed from the experience of colonialism and racial oppression. Hispanics were subjected to "racialization"(ii) for more than a century through such doctrines as the Spanish Black Legend and Manifest Destiny during the nineteenth and early twentieth century. The Pipoidea are a diverse group of frogs. Their diversity is demonstrated in their morphology, ecology, and behavior. One pipoid species, Xenopus laevis, has been used as a model system of developmental, physiological, and molecular studies of vertebrates. My work has focused on the developmental morphology of the chondrocranium and oral morphology of four pipoid taxa: Hymenochirus boettgeri, Rhinophrynus dorsalis, Pipa carvalhoi, and Xenopus laevis. Previous studies have suggested that the Anura may be diphyletic based on the unique characteristics of the chondrocanial morphology of pipoids. The arrival of inexpensive high fidelity audio capabilities for personal computers has been accompanied by sweeping claims of enhanced educational effectiveness. Research has only served to confuse these claims with both significant and non-significant findings. This may be due partly to the single dimensional model which has been assumed when examining audio. When computer-based audio is examined as a multi-dimensional display analogous in capability and function to the more familiar visual display (computer screen), a different picture emerges. The potential of white rot fungi, namely Phanerochaete chrysosporium ME 446 and Funalia trogii for the degradation of lignocellulosics and their ligninolytic enzyme activities under semi-solid state conditions has been studied. In this study, cotton plant stalk which is an agrowaste, is used as lignocellulosics material. It's very good source of fibrous raw material for the manufacture of pulp and paper industry, and also is available abundantly. In this study, proportion of lignin and cellulose is in cotton stalk 23±2 % and 40±3 % respectively. Combined Effects Of Endosulfan, Dimethoate And Carbaryl On Serumcalcium Levels And Heart Muscle Of Rats, Güldeniz Özmen, E. Arzu Elcüman

In this study, combination of low [acceptable daily intake (ADI)] and high (10xADI) doses of endosulfan, dimethoate and carbarly were administrated orally to the male rats for 3.5 months. Serum calcium levels of rats in all groups were determined. At the same time, whether or not there was calcification in heart muscle of rats in all groups were investigated histochemically. Serum calcium levels of rats treated with high dose of endosulfan+carbaryl and dimethoate+carbaryl mixture decreased significantly in comparison with controls. Calcification was not found in heart muscle tissues of the rats in all groups according to the results of histochemical …

In this study, the fatty acid compositions in phospholipid and triacylglycerol factions of ten-day- old adults of both sexes of Melanogryllus desertusreared on stock culture medium under labora-tory conditions, and the total fatty acid composition of the stock culture medium were analysed sep-arately by gas chromatography. Quantitative analysis of both fractions and the stock culture medium showed that oleic, palmitic and linoleic acids constituted the major part of the fatty acid compositions. The fatty acid compositions of the phospholipid and triaclglycerol fractions were quantitatively different. In this study Drechslera sorokiniana incidence was determined on subcrown internod and crowns of wheat and barley samples collected from Erzurum region in 1994 and 1995. Mycelial development and sporulation were investigated in the laboratory in 3 light periods and 4 agar media. Furthermore, pathogenicity tests were carried out in greenhouse on five wheat cultivars in pots. Under the field conditions, the mean percentages of disease ratios were found 46.8 % in wheat, and 51.1 % in barley in 1994; 48.9 % in wheat and 54.3 % in barley in 1995. Development Of The Downy Mildew Pathogen Bremia Lactucae Ontransgenic Lettuce Expressing A Bacterial \Beta-1,3-Glucanase, Yeter Dede

A \beta-1,3-glucanase gene from Arthrobacter sp. driven by the 35S promoter was singly transformed into two lettuce cultivars, Cobham Gree and Diana, using the binary vector system of Agrobacterium tumefaciens. Tansformation was confirmed by using Southern and Northern analysis, Npt II enzyme assays and segregation of resistance to kanamycin. Transgenic plants were infected with the letuce downy mildew fungus, Bremia lactucae which contains \beta-1,3-gluncan in its cell wall and alternations in the development the fungus could easily be monitored. Transgenic plants inoculated with B. lactucae showed different levels of resistant responses compared to the control and they were examined microscopically.

Field evalutaions of wing traps baited with disparlure, Z-7,8-epoxy-2-methyloctadecane, were done in 1989, in Izmit-Isıktepe, Turkey, Wing traps with used and never used sticky inserts were used. Study was conducted in a 5 ha oak ( Quercus pe-treae (Matt.) Liebl. stand surrounded by 25-year-old radiata pine ( Pinus radiata D. Don.) plantations. Traps were hung 1.5-2.0 m above the ground in host trees, and 50-60 m apart from each other. A total of 1177 male moths were captured in 18 traps from June 12 to August 14, 1989. On average, eight male moths per week were captured by the traps …

In this study, we investigated the possibility of using antisense oligonucleotides directed against TNF{dollar}\\alpha{dollar} mRNA to specifically inhibit TNF{dollar}\\alpha{dollar} production in silica-exposed rats and to test whether this inhibition can provide any protection against silicosis. To optimize the length and sequence of antisense oligonucleotides against TNF{dollar}\\alpha{dollar} mRNA, the effect of oligonucleotide length and different target sites on TNF{dollar}\\alpha{dollar} mRNA on the antisense inhibitory activity of TNF{dollar}\\alpha{dollar} production was investigated. The antisense oligonucleotides targeted to the cap site, the initial codon and the coding region of TNF{dollar}\\alpha{dollar} mRNA was found equally effectively. Isobutyl nitrite (IBN) is a volatile compound that causes vasodilation and smooth muscle relaxation. A history of abuse of this compound by HIV positive homosexual men has been associated with an increased incidence of Kaposi's Sarcoma, a tumor whose growth is responsive to cytokines. Previous work with the murine pulmonary model has demonstrated that exposure to IBN can suppress cytotoxic T cell ability, reduce the production of nitric oxide by macrophages and impair their ability to kill P815 targets. Comparison Of Esterases Between Life Stages And Sexes Of Resistant And Susceptible Strains Of German Cockroach (Dictyoptera: Blattellidae), No-Joong Park, Shripat T. Kamble

Esterase activity between the resistant Crawford and susceptible CSMA strains of German cockroach, Blattella germanica (L.), was compared with the substrates α- and β-naphthyl acetate across sex and nymphal age classes. Esterase isozyme analysis with native polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis also was conducted to identify quantitative and qualitative differences between strains, sexes, and age classes. The Crawford strain was highly resistant to cypermethrin, propoxur, and permethrin with a resistant ratio (RR) of 17.26,15.75,and 13.53, respectively, and mildly resistant to chlorpyrifos (RR 5.62). The α-NA and β-NA esterase activities in the Crawford strain were significantly higher than those activities in the CSMA …

Mesozooplankton Distribution And Abundance In The Pagan River: A Nutrient Enriched Subestuary Of The James River, Virginia, Lillian N. Davis, Harold G. Marshall

The mesozooplankton in the Pagan River was dominated by calanoid copepods, with abundance peaks occurring during late winter-early spring and from late summer into early fall. This included spring, summer, and fall abundance maxima. The total mean abundance of the mesozooplankton was 3,008/m3.

Growth in the number of states legalizing same-sex marriages and civil unions that increasingly mirror the rights afforded married partners has brought renewed focus on the issue of extra-territorial recognition of those relationships. The public policy exception is a primary, state-law-based impediment to the recognition of foreign marriages that do not conform to the forum state's definition of marriage. This article discusses the role of the public policy exception in rejecting recognition of foreign marriages and argues that the public policy exception has constitutional underpinnings that are rooted in principles of federalism and the protection of state sovereignty which inheres …

On a December night in 1993, Gregory Bryant-Bruce, age six months, was rushed to Vanderbilt University Medical Center Emergency Room for treatment of severe anemia, shock, and abnormally low hematocrit.' A CT scan revealed brain hemorrhaging, and a physical examination showed retinal hemorrhages of varying ages. Retinal bleeding in a young child is almost always caused by traumatic injury, and is considered to be a classic sign of "Shaken Impact Syndrome" ("SIS"), a life-threatening and relatively common form of child abuse. The National Eutrophication Management Program (NEMP) and Environment Australia convened a workshop to develop a coherent overview of the sources and transport of diffuse phosphorus in Australian catchments based on the latest knowledge. The Land and Water Resources Research and Development Corporation (LWRRDC) and the Murray–Darling Basin Commission (MDBC) jointly fund NEMP. A select group of scientists attended the workshop and developed a coherent statement about phosphorus sources and transport in Australian catchments. Iowa's prairie has to be assessed in the context of the pre- and post-agriculturally dominated ecosystem in which it now exists. This requires an understanding of prairies and of society's perspective of prairies. Therefore, the attitudes of people through time have to be considered; (1) those who were involved in the demise of the prairie, (2) those who helped saved the pieces of the prairie and (3) those who may be called upon to recover the prairie ecosystem.
