Building on a model by Anthony Kronman, the author argues that biotechnological researchers searching for valuable cells should occasionally be allowed to deceive research subjects whose cells prove valuable. The wish to preserve proper incentives for these searches justifies this exception to the law's usual abhorrence of deception. The subject's ability to "hold up" the researcher once the subject learns of his cells' value combined with the law's likely refusal to force an unwilling subject to continue his cooperation with the researcher poses risks for biotechnologists that other producers of information do not face and that the right to deceive …

Detection Of Crown Gal Agent ( Agrobacterium Tumefaciens) Ingrapevine Propagating Material, Kemal Benli̇oğlu, Meriç Özakman

Polyclonal antiserum produced against Agrobacterium tumefaciens (biovar 3) reacted in immunofluorescent test with biovar 3 strains of A.tumefaciens,causal agent of crown gal, from Central Anatolia. The antiserum did not react with A.tumefaciens biovar 1 (except for 1/200 dilution), biovar 2, other plant pathogens and symbionts. Vacuum extraction procedure were applied to recover A.tumefaciens from xylem vessels of one year old dormant grape cuttings. IFAS and selective media were used to detect bacteria. A.tumefaciens (biovar 3) was recovered from six cuttings of 8 infected vines and seven of 150 apparently healthy vines in Central Anatolia. The sensitivity thershold of the vacuum …

The foraging ecology of Apis mellifera syriaca and A. m. armeniaca was studied using artificial flower patches consisting of blue, white, and yellow flowers. Two experiments were performed with each race. Experiment I examined forager response to differences in sucrose reward molarity (quality of reward) associated with flower colors. Experiment II varied the quantity of sucrose reward associated with flower colors. A. m. syriacaand A. m. armeniacaeach responded to quality and quantity differences between blue and white flowers. Prior studies show that A. m. caucasica and A. m. ligustica respond to reward quality difference, but they do not respond to …

Assessment Of Response To Drought Stress Of Chickpea(Cicer Arietinuml.) Lines Under Rainfed Conditions, Cengiz Toker, M. İlhan Çağirgan

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Totally sixty four chickpea lines were grown for assesment of response to drought stress in the stress and non-stress environments under rainfed conditions. The seed yield of the lines when grown under the non-stress condition increased at a rate of 53% over the in stress condition. The line, FLIP 92-154C, was determinated as the best tolerant line to drought stress environment under the field condition. Also, seed yield strongly correlated with biological yield, harvest index, mean productivity, tolerance to drought stress and drought susceptibility index in the stress environment.

This experiment was conducted to study the effects of natural zeolite on the performance of laying hens. One hundred and eighty 37-week-old Babcock B-300 hens were fed with a diet containing 0, 20, 40, 60 and 80 g clinoptilolite/kg in an experiment consisting of 36 hens per treatment during a 4x28 days experimental period. All feeding programs were isocaloric and isonitrogenous. Hens were put at random into 5 treatment groups (12 replicates and 36 hens per treatment). Double strand breaks in cells may arise due to a number of reasons including mutagens and normal cellular processes such as V(D)J recombination. Unrepaired strand damage can result in broken chromosomes and cell death. Improper repair can lead to cancer. A specific component of nonhomologous recombination to repair DSBs was studied in two different cell lines, Chinese hamster ovary K1 cells and xrs cells. Xrs cells, deficient in Ku protein were impaired in their ability to repair DSBs induced by ionizing radiation. These results and other findings support the critical function of Ku in DSB repair and indicate a multiple …

ABOUT THE TEST REPORT AND USE OF THE DATA

The test data contained in this report are a tabulation of the results of a series of tests. Due to the restricted format of these pages, only a limited amount of data and not all of the tractor specifications are included. The full OECD report contains usually about 30 pages of data and specifications. The test data were obtained for each tractor under similar conditions and therefore, provide a means of comparison of performance based on a limited set of reported data.

Seventy-two Neotropical migrant passerines were analyzed for the presence of 17 organochlorine pesticide residues (aldrin; alpha-BHC; beta-BHC; gamma-BHC; delta-BHC; p,p'-DDD; p,p'-DDE; p,p'-DDT; dieldrin; endosulfan I; endosulfan II; endosulfan sulfate; endrin; endrin aldehyde; heptachlor- heptachlor epoxide; methoxychlor) using standard method of gas chromatography applied to bird tissues. Individuals were colIected along the Mississippi River during May 1996 and represent 11 species (Catharus ustulatus; Geothlypis trichas; Protonotaria citrea; Mniotilta varia; Contopus virens; Dendroica petechia; Ernpidonax minimus; Passerina cyanea; Myiarchus crinitus; Vireo gilvus). The contaminants most frequently detected were p,p'-DDE, dieldrin, and heptachlor epoxide. No significant difference was found between male and female …

Chlorophyll is the light harvesting molecule for many photosynthetic organisms. As a result, chlorophyll is an extremely important molecule, directly or indirectly, to nearly all life. The production of chlorophyll involves a long and complex pathway. The conversion of protochlorophyllide to chlorophyllide is one of the final steps in chlorophyll biosynthesis. Some of the factors affecting the regulation of this process were the focus of this project.

FreshIy laid eggs of the Eastern Lubber grasshopper, Romalea guttata, are yellow and soft-shelled, but within several hours the eggs become hardened and dark brown. In a similar process, calyx and oviduct secretions, which from the egg pod, become frothy, darkened, hardened, and water insoluble during oviposition. It has been suggested that secretions from the paired Comstock-Kellogg glands accelerate tanning of both the eggs and egg pod foam. I investigated the effects of Comstock-Kellogg gland secretions on the rate of egg and egg pod tanning during egg pod production in the female Eastern Lubber grasshopper, R. guttata.
