The purpose of the present research is to investigate whether or not chronically ill children are victims of child abuse more frequently than healthy children. The gender of the child and of the parent will also be examined for differences in the treatment children receive.

The study examined attitudes toward homosexuals from a neo-functional perspective, including a proposal that these attitudes are primarily 'open' and informationally based, or primarily 'closed' and affectively based. Scientific evidence of a genetic predisposition to homosexuality should be differentially received, based on the attitudes of the recipients of the information.

In order for computer hardware to be utilized to its potential in the middle school classroom, relevant computer software programs must be readily available for teacher and student use. Computer use has increased both in school and home settings and with this increased use comes an increased need for programs suitable for the subject matter taught in the classroom. Current educational research indicates that student performance is increased with the use of software that is directly relevant to the curriculum.

Teaching English/Spanish Cognates To Increase Reading Comprehension, Stacey A. Suhm

A curriculum has been developed for middle school English as a Second Language (ESL) students to improve their reading comprehension. A review of the literature found that vocabulary is an essential part of reading comprehension and becoming aware of English/Spanish cognates can increase the students' English vocabulary. The curriculum includes a survey to assess a student's knowledge and use of cognates, lesson plans to introduce the concept of cognates, to practice recognizing English/Spanish cognates, and learn the correlation of suffixes between English and Spanish. The curriculum also includes lists of English/Spanish cognates divided by subjects.

Microbial populations in complex environmental samples are difficult to characterize; current techniques are incomplete and time consuming. We investigated a polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based method for rapidly comparing bacterial communities independent of culture or cloning. Community 16S rRNA genes were amplified and fluorescently labeled by PCR. The labeled products were digested by a restriction enzyme and the labeled, terminal restriction fragments (TRFs) were separated by electrophoresis and detected by laser-induced fluorescence on an automated gene sequencer. PCR parameters were optimized using an in vitro model community of known organisms. Community comparisons were made between deer fecal pellets, petroleum hydrocarbon-contaminated sands …

Two genera of sepiolid squids—Euprymna, found primarily in shallow, coastal waters of Hawaii and the Western Pacific, and Sepiola, the deeper-, colder-water-dwelling Mediterranean and Atlantic squids—are known to recruit luminous bacteria into light organ symbioses. The light organ symbiont of Euprymna spp. is Vibrio fischeri, but until now, the light organ symbionts of Sepiola spp. have remained inadequately identified. We used a combination of molecular and physiological characteristics to reveal that the light organs of Sepiola affinis and Sepiola robusta contain a mixed population of Vibrio logei and V. fischeri, with V. logei comprising between …

By comparing the papers produced by the laboratory teams of Robert Gallo and Jean Luc Montagnier during the AIDS virus hunt, we have an opportunity to discern the fine line between a bold, explicit rhetoric that may convince as well as offend and a bald, reserved rhetoric that may actually conceal important implications. Going too far in either direction may create misunderstandings and ethical dilemmas as will be demonstrated in a textual analysis deepened by an exploration of historical context and interviews with key participants. The interest in possessing ferrets as pets has given rise to controversy between the "rights" of the individual to own the pet of their choice and the concerns for protection of wildlife in California. An overview of the legislative history in California illustrates the state's attempts at protecting native wildlife species from exotic wild birds and animals. Concerns as to the potential threats associated with the legalization of ferrets in California are warranted in light of the wildlife damage resulting from the deliberate introduction of ferrets in New Zealand and the non-native red fox in California. Laboratory Efficacy Study With A Warfarin Bait To Control The Black-Tailed Prairie Dog, Jeff J. Mach

Control of the black-tailed prairie dog (Cynomys ludovicianus) is important for the reclamation of pasture ground for domestic cattle and limiting the spread of disease to humans and other wildlife. Six different concentrations of warfarin bait were fed to prairie dogs to determine mortality. Without the access to dietary vitamin K, the prairie dogs were susceptible to the warfarin bait. However, some of the prairie dogs recovered and survived the test after bait exposure was terminated. This could be due to physiological differences and the availability of fat-soluble vitamin K. California ground squirrels are a major problem in areas that also support populations of endangered kangaroo rats. Traditional bait stations can be easily modified to exclude kangaroo rats, thereby providing landowners with a method of controlling ground squirrels that mitigates hazards to endangered kangaroo rats. Specifications for the design and use of modified bait stations are discussed.

Results Of Investigations Into The Groundwater Response And Productivity Of High Water Use Agricultural Systems 1990-1997 3 Hunts' Catchment (Frankland), A D. Smith, Richard J. George Dr, P R. Scott, D L. Bennett, R J. Rippon, G J. Orr

Resource management technical reports

High water use vegetation systems for salinity control were trialed on an 80 ha catchment located 12 km east of Frankland, Western Australia. The catchment receives about 510 mm annual rainfall and 1525 mm annual evaporation. Development of salinity in the catchment is concentrated in the valley floor. Here the groundwater is extremely saline (3000-4000 mS/m) and piezometric levels are between 1 m below and 1 m above the surface.

One of the decisions made in the 1985 Bighorn National Forest Land and Resource Management Plan (Forest Plan) was that timber sale offerings would be made. The Caribou timber sale was proposed in order to implement that Forest Plan allocation decision. The selection of this sale area was based upon several factors, including: Past forest management decisions and silvicultural prescriptions; the existence of a road system, which will minimize impacts upon wildlife habitat and water quality; the opportunity to change the forested vegetation to improve, or at least maintain within the Forest Plan standard and guidelines and other legal requirements, …
