Loyola University Chicago Law Journal

In 1997, the Illinois House of Representatives conducted its first impeachment investigation of an Illinois Supreme Court justice in 145 years. In this Article, the authors discuss the appropriate standards for impeachment under the Illinois constitution and the need to ensure that the independence of the judiciary is not harmed by politically motivated impeachment proceedings. The authors also examine how the Special House Investigating Committee ("House Committee") applied those standards to its investigation of Illinois Supreme Court Justice James D. Heiple. Finally, they propose reforms to the judicial disciplinary provisions of the Illinois constitution as a result of the Heiple …

The advent of patent protection for genetically engineered inventions occurred in 1980 with the landmark Supreme Court decision in Diamond v. Chakrabarty. Following the lead of the Supreme Court, the Patent and Trademark Office ("PTO"), in 1987, issued a new regulatory ruling that expanded the PTO's statutory interpretation of 35 U.S.C. § 101 patentable subject matter to include devices based upon nonnatural occurring manufacture or composition of matter resulting from some level of human intervention in the modification of nonhuman organisms. Sex Pheromones Of The Cereal Pest Eurygaster Inte-Gricepsputon (Heteroptera: Scutelleridae)- Atheoretical Study, Lemi Türker

Turkish Journal of Biology

AM1-type molecular orbital calculations were performed on the geometry-optimized struc-tures of various 4-(1', 5' - dimethly -4' - heptenylidene) -1- methylcyclohexene isomers. It was found that the major component (4Z, 4'E isomer) of the sex pheromone of Eurygoaster integriceps is very dissimilar in chemical composition to the other isomers, although the stabilities and heats of the for-mation characteristics are comparable. However, some small molecules resembling only a part of the pheromone might exhibit some partial activity.

Differences In Body Dissatisfication In Traditional College-Aged Men And Women, Joseph R. Cahoe

Modern Psychological Studies

Findings from recent studies of body image have suggested that women are more dissatisfied with their body shapes than men. Participants' levels of body dissatisfaction were evaluated using a subscale of the Eating Disorder Inventory (Gamer, Olmstead, Polivy 1983 Results of an independent-groups t-test revealed a significant effect t(49) = 4.39, p < .05 Specifically scores on body dissatisfaction were much higher for women (M = 12.13) than for men (M = 3.87) indicating that women do have higher rates of body dissatisfaction than men in a traditional college-aged population. Suggestions for future research include studying whether actual body shape and size has an impact on body dissatisfaction.

A Bowen ratio energy balance was conducted over a Tamarix ramosissima (saltcedar) stand growing in a riparian corridor along the Virgin River in southern Nevada. Measurements in two separate years were compared and contrasted on the basis of changes in growing conditions. In 1994, a drought year, record high temperatures, dry winds, and a falling water table caused partial wilt of outer smaller twigs in the canopy of many trees in the stand around the Bowen tower. Subsequently, evapotranspiration (ET) estimates declined dramatically over a 60‐day period (11 mm d−1 tod−1). In 1995, the Virgin River at the Bowen tower …

The study reported describes a combination of recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) and collagen (C) to regenerate bone. Unilateral critical-sized defects (CSDs) were prepared in radii of 32 skeletally mature New Zealand white rabbits. Rabbits were divided evenly among four treatments: autograft, absorbable C (Helistatt), 35 mg of rhBMP-2 combined with absorbable C (rhBMP-2/C), and untreated CSDs. The two euthanasia periods were 4 and 8 weeks. Radiographs were taken the day of surgery, every 2 weeks, and at term and the percent of radiopacity was measured. Data analysis revealed a time-dependent increase in the percent radiopacity with rhBMP-2/C. Histological …

Behavioral Education for Human, Animal, Vegetation, and Ecosystem Management (BEHAVE)

A herbivore faces challenges while foraging--ongoing changes in its physiological condition along with variation in the nutrient and toxin concentrations of foods, spatially and temporally--that make selecting a nutritious diet a vital affair. Foraging behaviours arise from simple rules that operate across levels of resolution from cells and organs to individuals and their interactions with social and physical environments. At all these levels, behaviour is a function of its consequences: a behaviour operating on the environment to induce changes is itself changed by those events. Thus, behaviour emerges from its own functioningbehaviour self-organizes-not from that of its surroundings. This ostensible …

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Effluent from the dairy milking center, including discharges from the milking parlor (manure, feed solids, hoof dirt) and milkhouse (bulk tank and pipeline rinse water and detergent used in cleaning), is commonly disposed of in a variety of ways. Milking center effluent offers several unique challenges due to the presence of: 1. Large volumes of contaminated water which can overwhelm soil absorption systems. 2. Milk solids and fats and manure solids which plug many systems. 3. Cleaning sanitizers which reduce bacterial breakdown of solids. When these systems fail, effluent will become a risk to surface and groundwater quality.

It’s not uncommon for fuel to leak into aquifers and pollute the drinking water of a family or even a community, and it can be very costly for the landowner. Petroleum product storage is regulated by laws regarding fire safety and air quality as well. Therefore, petroleum product storage must be evaluated from various perspectives.
