A Preferred Vision For Administering Secondary Schools : A Reflective Essay, Fredrick A. Johnson Jan 1998

A Preferred Vision For Administering Secondary Schools : A Reflective Essay, Fredrick A. Johnson

Graduate Research Papers

This reflective paper is my vision of the role of a forward looking Secondary Administrator who effectively uses educational research to impact school improvement in a positive fashion. It is, in effect, a snapshot that includes two sections. Some personal history, characteristics, and core values are in the first section. The final section is a composite reflection that synthesizes knowledge, skills, and attitudes gained through coursework and from experience into my professional vision for administrative practice. I think brain compatible computer-assisted learning can be a component of effective education and the research cited reflects that.

Hamstring Tendons As Autograft Replacements In Acl Reconstructions: A Review Of The Literature, Jason Anderson Jan 1998

Hamstring Tendons As Autograft Replacements In Acl Reconstructions: A Review Of The Literature, Jason Anderson

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Hamstring tendons have gained a great deal of acceptance in anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction procedures in the 1990's, but some misconceptions concerning the ability of hamstring grafts to successfully replace ruptured ACLs still exist. More surgeons are using hamstring tendons to reconstruct ACL-deficient knees because their harvest does not disrupt the extensor mechanism of the knee. Enthusiasts of the hamstring graft believe that it promotes quicker return of quadriceps strength and knee range of motion without a prevalence of postoperative pateIIofemoral symptoms.

The purpose of this review is to dispute the concerns that exist concerning the initial tensile strength, …

Assembly Of The Herpes Simplex Virus Capsid: Preformed Triplexes Bind To The Nascent Capsid, Juliet V. Spencer, William W. Newcomb, Darrell R. Thomsen, Fred L. Homa, Jay C. Brown Jan 1998

Assembly Of The Herpes Simplex Virus Capsid: Preformed Triplexes Bind To The Nascent Capsid, Juliet V. Spencer, William W. Newcomb, Darrell R. Thomsen, Fred L. Homa, Jay C. Brown

Biology Faculty Publications

The herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) capsid is a T=16 icosahedral shell that forms in the nuclei of infected cells. Capsid assembly also occurs in vitro in reaction mixtures created from insect cell extracts containing recombinant baculovirus-expressed HSV-1 capsid proteins. During capsid formation, the major capsid protein, VP5, and the scaffolding protein, pre-VP22a, condense to form structures that are extended into procapsids by addition of the triplex proteins, VP19C and VP23. We investigated whether triplex proteins bind to the major capsid-scaffold protein complexes as separate polypeptides or as preformed triplexes. Assembly products from reactions lacking one triplex protein were …

Saddam Hussein As Hostes Humani Generis? Should The U.S. Intervene?, Edieth Y. Wu Jan 1998

Saddam Hussein As Hostes Humani Generis? Should The U.S. Intervene?, Edieth Y. Wu

Syracuse Journal of International Law and Commerce

This article discusses several jurisdictional principles which may assist the United States in its efforts to acquire jurisdiction in certain situations that are declared, by the United States, egregious enough to warrant intervention. The United States has long used the "effects doctrine" 1 to assert extraterritorial jurisdiction. This article concentrates on developing and employing the Hostes Humani Generis Theory 2 and its past and possible future use. The central focus is to determine whether the possibility exists that the United States may use the theory in an effort to acquire physical jurisdiction over Saddam Hussein.

A survey, though not comprehensive, …

Sexual Differences In A Californian Hunter-Gatherer Population, Elizabeth Weiss Jan 1998

Sexual Differences In A Californian Hunter-Gatherer Population, Elizabeth Weiss

Faculty Publications, Anthropology

This project examined the skeletal remains of a 3, 000-year-o/d preagricultural population to determine whether a sexual division of labor existed. Cortical bone remodels itself throughout an individual's lifetime in response to the stresses experienced by activity patterns. Cortical bone morphology, therefore, discloses the nature of the stresses caused by different activity patterns. Computer tomography was used to obtain femoral cross-sections for 30 females and 34 males, taken at two levels along the diaphysis of the bone in order to determine the direction from which the major bending stresses are created. Student's t-tests and Analysis of Variance were used to …

Patterns In Avian Community Structure And Non-Point Source Disturbance Potential Along The Land-Water Interface Of A Prairie Pothole Lake, Kristel K. Bakker, N. H. Troelstrup Jr.

Oak Lake Field Station Research Publications

This study was conducted to test the hypothesis that bird community structure varies significantly between areas which are prone versus not prone to disturbance within the land-water interface of a prairie lake. On-site assessment of land cover and a Geographic Information System (GIS) with coverages of slope, soil erodability, soil hydrologic group and drainages were used to delineate sites prone and not prone to non-point source disturbance. Habitat and community attributes were examined within these site classes during the summer of 1995. While habitat differences between classes (prone and not prone) were inconclusive, results of avian community analyses indicated that …

Ornamental Traits In Hyalella Azteca As Indicators Of Water Quality: Implications For Biological Monitoring, Eric A. Miller, Nels H. Troelstrup Jr. Jan 1998

Ornamental Traits In Hyalella Azteca As Indicators Of Water Quality: Implications For Biological Monitoring, Eric A. Miller, Nels H. Troelstrup Jr.

Oak Lake Field Station Research Publications

Ornamental traits are sexually selected traits that an organism uses to attract a mate or defend against a rival. Studies have shown that ornamental traits are more sensitive to environmental changes during development relative to naturally selected traits and tend to develop smaller in size or more asymmetrical in response to disturbance. Hyalella azteca is a freshwater benthic macroinvertebrate that has been used in numerous studies to establish water quality criteria in freshwater ecosystems. Male H. azteca use their antennae and gnathopods (claws) during precopulatory struggles. Hence, these traits are considered “armaments”. Thus, ornamental traits in H. azteca provide a …

Single Magnetic Domains In Magnetotactic Bacteria, Richard B. Frankel, Jin-Ping Zhang, Dennis A. Bazylinski

Physics

Magnetotactic bacteria construct an internal, permanent magnetic dipole based on single magnetic domain particles of magnetite or greigite. The organisms exert a high degree of control over the size and morphology of the particles. This may be relevant in distinguishing biogenic from nonbiogenic iron mineral particles.
