Parallel Probabilistic Computations On A Cluster Of Workstations, Atanas Radenski, Andrew Vann, Boyana Norris
Parallel Probabilistic Computations On A Cluster Of Workstations, Atanas Radenski, Andrew Vann, Boyana Norris
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Books and Book Chapters
Probabilistic algorithms are computationally intensive approximate methods for solving intractable problems. Probabilistic algorithms are excellent candidates for cluster computations because they require little communication and synchronization. It is possible to specify a common parallel control structure as a generic algorithm for probabilistic cluster computations. Such a generic parallel algorithm can be glued together with domain-specific sequential algorithms in order to derive approximate parallel solutions for different intractable problems.
In this paper we propose a generic algorithm for probabilistic computations on a cluster of workstations. We use this generic algorithm to derive specific parallel algorithms for two discrete optimization problems: the …

Ec98-771 Farm*A*Syst Nebraska’S System For Assessing Water Contamination Fact Sheet 8: Improving Household Wastewater Treatment, Robert Grisso, Delynn Hay, Paul J. Jasa, Richard K. Koelsch, Sharon Skipton, Wayne Woldt
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
A properly installed and maintained system for treating and disposing of household wastewater will minimize the impact of that system on groundwater and surfacewater. State and local codes specify how wastewater systems must be designed, installed, and maintained. For example, Title 124 regulates the design, operation, and maintenance of septic tank systems in Nebraska. In addition, federal and state regulations guide the stabilization and land application of wastewater septage.
Virginia's Waters: Still At Risk - A Critique Of The Commonwealth's Water Quality Assessment Reports, Chesapeake Bay Foundation
Virginia's Waters: Still At Risk - A Critique Of The Commonwealth's Water Quality Assessment Reports, Chesapeake Bay Foundation
Richmond Journal of Law and the Public Interest
Federal law requires all states to periodically report to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on the water quality of their rivers, lakes and streams and provide EPA with a listing of polluted waters. Virginia has recently prepared two reports for 1996 and boasts that only 5 percent of the Commonwealth's rivers are polluted. Under closer inspection, this information is found to be extremely misleading due to a number of serious gaps and flaws within Virginia's water quality monitoring program and its methods of data reporting and evaluation. When Virginia states that only 5 percent of the waters it monitors fail …

Microsatellite Evolution: Testing The Ascertainment Bias Hypothesis, Allan M. Crawford, Steven M. Kappes, Korena A. Paterson, Mauricio J. Degotari, Ken G. Dodds, Brad A. Freking, Roger T. Stone, Craig W. Beattie
Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports
Previous studies suggest the median allele length of microsatellites is longest in the species from which the markers were derived, suggesting that an ascertainment bias was operating. We have examined whether the size distribution of microsatellite alleles between sheep and cattle is source dependent using a set of 472 microsatellites that can be amplified in both species. For those markers that were polymorphic in both species we report a significantly greater number of markers (P < 0.001) with longer median allele sizes in sheep, regardless of microsatellite origin. This finding suggests that any ascertainment bias operating during microsatellite selection is only a minor contributor to the variation observed.

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports
A genetic map of Ovis aries (haploid n = 27) was developed with 519 markers (504 microsatellites) spanning —3063 cM in 26 autosomal linkage groups and 127 cM (female specific) of the X Chromosome (Chr). Genotypic data were merged from the IMF flock (Crawford et al., Genetics 140, 703, 1995) and the USDA mapping flock. Seventy-three percent (370/504) of the microsatellite markers on the map are common to the USDA-ARS U.S. Meat Animal Research Center cattle linkage map, with 27 of the common markers derived from sheep. The number of common markers per homologous linkage group ranges from 5 to …

Characteristics And Treatment Of Conduct Disorders, Vicky Jo Kukral
Characteristics And Treatment Of Conduct Disorders, Vicky Jo Kukral
Graduate Research Papers
Conduct Disorder is the most diagnosed condition in both outpatient and inpatient mental health facilities for children in the United States. Behavior problems such as aggression, destruction of property, theft and violation of basic rules are concerns for parents, teachers, peers and other adults. In an effort to help increase the reader's understanding of the Conduct Disorder population and their treatment, the author of this paper will describe and characteristics of this population. The author will also address specific mental health concerns as found in a review of the literature, and the status of mental health treatment.

Telling Stories, Lawrence Kimmel
Telling Stories, Lawrence Kimmel
Philosophy Faculty Research
In what follows I will be using Native American culture and literature as the primary focus for a discussion of storytelling. For this culture, the life of speech and the presencing of meaning through the sharing of stories are vital to the very existence and identity of a people. Momaday's remarks about the nature of the relationship between language and experience surely are not limited to the lives of Native Americans. His accompanying claim that we cannot exist apart from the moral dimension of language is no less applicable to our own culture, but showing the importance of an awareness …

Trace Elements In The Aquatic Bird Food Chain At The North Ponds, Texaco Refinery Casper, Wyoming, Kimberly Dickerson, Pedro Ramirez Jr.
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
The objectives of this study were to determine nesting success of aquatic birds, trace element concentrations in the aquatic food chain, and whether trace elements were biomagnifying through the aquatic food chain of ponds at the inactive Texaco Refinery, in Evansville, Wyoming. Trace element concentrations in samples collected from the Texaco Refinery were compared to those found in samples collected from a background site, Pathfinder National Wildlife Refuge.
The ponds at the inactive refinery provided a source of water to aquatic birds in an otherwise arid landscape. Nesting success for shorebirds using an island in Pond 1 was greater than …

Contaminants Information Bulletin: Environmental Contaminants In Sedimente From Oilfield Produced Water Discharge Points, Pedro Ramirez Jr.
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
Oilfield produced water is generated from the extraction of oil mixed with groundwater. A separator is used to physically remove the water from the oil; however, the produced water can contain residual amounts of oil. Additionally, malfunction of the separator equipment can cause inefficient separation and result in higher amounts of oil in the water. The Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality (WY DEQ) regulates the discharge of produced waters under the National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) .WY DEQ permits 10 µg/l of oil in produced water discharged into regulated waters of the state. Produced water discharges are not permitted …

Introduction
The harvest of renewable natural resources is predicated on the theory of density-dependent population growth (Hilborn et al. 1995). This theory predicts a negative relationship between the intrinsic rate of population growth and population density (i.e., number of individuals per unit of limiting resource) due to intraspecific competition for resources. In a relatively stable environment, unharvested populations tend to settle around an equilibrium where births balance deaths. Populations respond to harvest losses by increasing reproductive output or through decreased natural mortality because more resources are available per individual. Population size eventually settles around a new equilibrium and the harvest, …

The important questions for instructors to address concern what skills the student is to learn and how the student is to be motivated to acquire those skills. Questions about simulations, graphics tools, and the like are unimportant until the first two questions have been answered adequately. We discuss the role of explanation by students and describe a mechanism for motivating students to learn.
