Avian Diversity And Habitat Use Within The Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary, Jeff Childs Jan 1998

Avian Diversity And Habitat Use Within The Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary, Jeff Childs

Gulf of Mexico Science

Fauna and flora of the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary are well documented in the literature, with few exceptions. To date, the avifauna of this marine protected area remains unreported. This paper documents the avifauna recorded opportunistically in the Sanctuary and accounts for the patterns of diversity that were observed. Land birds comprise 84% of the 50 species identified and recorded. All land birds documented in the catalogue are neotropical migrants. Transient Gulf Coast species comprise 30% of the land birds identified within the Sanctuary. Seabirds account for 16% of the species in the catalogue. The most commonly documented …

On The Future Of Total Theory: Science, Antiscience, And Human Candor, Joseph Vining Jan 1998

On The Future Of Total Theory: Science, Antiscience, And Human Candor, Joseph Vining

Books

Since we will be talking about science and antiscience, let me begin by recalling the work of Erasmus Darwin, grandfather of Charles Darwin.

Erasmus was a naturalist like his grandson. He was distinguished in his time and is well known still in his own right. But he wrote scientific works in verse, even what might be called poems. One of them was The Botanic Garden, and the best known and most effective part of it was entitled The Loves of the Plants. It was full of imagery from the classics and from biology, full of metaphor and play. Our noticing …

We've heard it all before. The publicized stream of hollow praise, hailing us as the bright “Future of Illinois!” Claims mouthed so often, the words become empty and meaningless. Throughout our stay here, we learn to ignore those comments, because everyone knows that IMSA is more than some stereotypical center for intellectuals, IMSA is a complex mosaic of so many hidden dimensions of such depth and diversity, it becomes more than a school; it becomes an exciting, unique way of life. Voice User Interfaces (Vuis) Emerge, Brian D. Lynch Jan 1998

Voice User Interfaces (Vuis) Emerge, Brian D. Lynch

Journal of International Information Management

Human beings use speech as the primary means of communication. Therefore, voice user interfaces (VUIs) represent a natural way for people to interact with computers (Fournier, 1996; Hyde, 1979; Teja and Gonnella, 1983; Witten 1982). Voice input facilitates a much higher computer input rate than keyboard or mouse driven input. Voice output permits computer generated output in devices when output screens are not available (e.g., most phones) or in situations where the user's eyes are busy elsewhere (e.g., driving a car, assembling a product, etc.). Thus, VUIs are viewed as the logical next generation in computer interfaces. Forecasts call for …

Sidescan Sonar Image, Surficial Geological Interpretation, And Bathymetry Of The Long Island Sound Sea Floor Off Milford, Connecticut, Roman Zajac, David C. Twichell, Larry J. Poppe, Ralph S. Lewis, Veeann Cross

Biology and Environmental Science Faculty Publications

The surficial geology of a 6-km X 8-km section of the western part of Long Island Sound has been mapped. The map area is 4 to 12 km south of the mouth of the Housatonic River in 14 to 40 m water depth (see location map). This study is part of an interdisciplinary program to define the surficial geology and benthic habitats in Long Island Sound and to see how they are changing with time, and includes, in addition to this map area, the other survey areas shown on the location map. The U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the …

Land Use Patterns In Relation To Lake Water Quality In The Great Pond Watershed, Problems In Environmental Science Course (Biology 493), Colby College, Colby Environmental Assessment Team, Colby College Jan 1998

Land Use Patterns In Relation To Lake Water Quality In The Great Pond Watershed, Problems In Environmental Science Course (Biology 493), Colby College, Colby Environmental Assessment Team, Colby College

Colby College Watershed Study: Great Pond (2012, 2010, 1998)

Lakes are natural resources, which have many effects on the land surrounding them, They support adjacent communities by providing water and regulating temperatures, helping to define the surrounding ecosystem, and serving as sources of drinking water as well as recreation. The prolonged presence of human activity in a watershed can disturb the physical and chemical cycles of the lake and its surrounding ecosystems (Henderson-Sellers and Markland 1987). Over time, lakes undergo a process called eutrophication, a natural aging process during which the nutrient levels increase and dissolved oxygen levels decrease (Smith and Smith 1998). As the lake ages or becomes …

The Scope Of Hermeneutics In Natural Science, Patrick A. Heelan Jan 1998

The Scope Of Hermeneutics In Natural Science, Patrick A. Heelan

Research Resources

THE SCOPE OF HERMENEUTICS IN NATURAL SCIENCE Hermeneutics or interpretation is concerned with the generation, transmission, and acceptance of meaning within the lifeworld and was the original method of the human sciences stemming from F. Schleiermacher and W. Dilthey. Hermeneutic philosophy refers mostly to M. Heidegger’s. This paper addresses natural science from the perspective of Heidegger’s analysis of meaning and interpretation. Its purpose is to incorporate into the philosophy of science those aspects of historicality, culture, and tradition that are absent from the traditional analysis of theory and explanation, to re-orient the current discussion about scientific realism around the hermeneutics …

Western Australia Soil Acidity Research And Development Update 1998 : Time To Lime, Department Of Agriculture And Food, Western Australia Jan 1998

Western Australia Soil Acidity Research And Development Update 1998 : Time To Lime, Department Of Agriculture And Food, Western Australia

Bulletins 4000 -

Recent yield responses by canola where lime has been applied to acidic soils are very encouraging. Two sites have shown that the yield increase in canola after lime was applied in the previous year would have easily paid for the total cost of purchase, transport and application of the lime.

This work was carried out to demonstrate the increased options that are likely to be available once producers are treating or managing soil acidity. Canola is becoming increasingly important as a cash value crop and a break crop allowing wider rotations.

Growers are pushing the limits of canola’s tolerance to …

Effects Of Radio Transmitters On Migrating Wood Thrushes, Larkin A. Powell, David Krementz, Jason Lang, Michael J. Conroy Jan 1998

Effects Of Radio Transmitters On Migrating Wood Thrushes, Larkin A. Powell, David Krementz, Jason Lang, Michael J. Conroy

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

We quantified the effects of radio transmitters on Wood Thrushes (Hylocichla mustelina) using 4 yr of banding and telemetry data from Piedmont National Wildlife Refuge, Georgia. Flight performance models suggest that the 1.6-g transmitter shortens the migratory range of wood thrushes by only 60 km, and the estimated migratory range is adequate to accomplish migration even with limited fat stores. We used two strengths of line, 5- and 9- kg test-strength braided Dacron, to attach the transmitters using the thigh-harness method. We recaptured 13 returning radio-marked wood thrushes, seven of which were still marked. Six of the seven birds marked …
