The Upper MississippRi iver is an importanth abitat for migratingM allards. However,s iltationa nd development threaten the value of this habitat. We used banding data at a regionals cale to determinet he derivationa nd distributiono f Mallard recoveries in the Upper Mississippi to study whether changesi n habitato ccurringd uring1 961-1989w ere reflected in Mallard migration. The Upper Mississippi has attracted a constant proportion of recoveries from SW Saskatchewan, SE Saskatchewan, SW Manitoba and the Missouri River Basin during 1965-1989. We found no changes in Mallard recovery rates during 1965-1989 for any sex/age class banded in these breeding areas (P …

Methylenetetrahydrofolate Reductase And Methionine Synthase: Biochemistry And Molecular Biology, R. G. Matthews, Christal A. Sheppard, C. Goulding
Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications
Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase and cobalamin-dependent methionine synthase catalyze the penultimate and ultimate steps in the biosynthesis of methionine in prokaryotes, and are required for the regeneration of the methyl group of methionine in mammals. Defects in either of these enzymes can lead to hyperhomocysteinemia. The sequences of the human methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase and methionine synthase are now known, and show clear homology with their bacterial analogues. Mutations in both enzymes that are known to occur in humans and to be associated with hyperhomocysteinemia affect residues that are conserved in the bacterial enzymes. Structure/function studies on the bacterial proteins, summarized in this review, …
From Loving To Romer: Homosexual Marriage And Moral Discernment, Richard F. Duncan
From Loving To Romer: Homosexual Marriage And Moral Discernment, Richard F. Duncan
Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications
The dual-gender marriage requirement does not treat men and women unequally. Instead, it recognizes and celebrates the physical differences between men and women and their obvious sexual complementarity. Traditional marriage laws do not discriminate on the basis of gender; rather, they recognize the equal indispensability of both genders to the institution of marriage. The dual-gender requirement, like the decision in Loving, is animated by a moral sense that discerns the true nature of marriage. As Justice Ginsburg put it so well, most people understand that the two sexes are not fungible and that dual-gender marriages and same-sex unions are …

"They Call Me 'Eight Eyes'": Hardwick'S Respectability, Romer'S Narrowness, And Same-Sex Marriage, Richard F. Duncan
Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications
Justice White's landmark opinion in Hardwick has survived both the test of time and the many slings and arrows of outraged scholarship launched at it by law professors who believe the Constitution should be interpreted as codifying the Kama Sutra. The eminent respectability and rightness of Justice White's methodology and reasoning in Hardwick was completely vindicated in Glucksberg, the Supreme Court's latest--and one of its most significant--decisions on the meaning of fundamental rights protected by substantive due process.
In Glucksberg, the Supreme Court reaffirmed an objective historical methodology based upon a careful and precise description of the asserted liberty …

COUNTERING THE THREAT POSED BY NON-STATE ACTORS IN THE PROLIFERATION OF WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION
The collapse of the Soviet Union created unprecedented opportunities for non-state actors to obtain access to nuclear, biological and chemical weapons and their delivery means, often referred to as weapons of mass destruction (WMD). In particular, access to nuclear weapons and related materials, technology and expertise has raised serious concerns. As noted in the 1997 Counterproliferation Review Committee Report to Congress:
The chilling reality is that nuclear materials, technologies, and expertise are more accessible now than at any time in history-due in part to …

Tinigible Body Macrophages In Regulation Of Germinal Center Reactions, John P. Smith, Gregory F. Burton, John G. Tew, Andras K. Szakal
Anatomy and Neurobiology Publications
Tingible body macrophages (TBM), long thought simply as scavengers of apoptotic lymphocytes, are located in the unique microenvironment of germinal centers in close proximity to antigen-retaining follicular dendritic cells (FDC). Observations that TBM endocytose FDC-iccosomal (immune-complex coated bodies) antigen suggested that TBM might present this antigen and help regulate the germinal center reaction. To test for antigen presentation, the ovalbumin (OVA)-specific TH hybridoma, 3DO-54.8, which produces IL-2 on receiving effective presentation of OVA, were used as responders to OVA-bearing TBM. Results showed that OVA-bearing TBM failed to induce IL-2 production. Furthermore, addition of TBM to IL- 2-inducing positive controls …

Reconstruction Of The Part Vegetation On The Headwaters Of The Piney Creek Watershed In Houston And Trinity Counties, Texas, Velicia R. Hubbard, David H. Jurney
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
The National Forests and Grasslands of Texas began a project in 1994 for ecosystem management involving multiple disciplines in an holistic approach to resource inventories. We first began with an intensive archival study of the forest acquisition files and the General Land Office (GLO) files in an effort to identify the western limits of the longleaf pine at the time of initial Anglo-American settlement ca. 1850. Vegetation information was gleaned from this work along with an understanding of the historical occupation of the area, aided by plotting this information onto USGS 7.5' maps overlain by the historic Tobin landownership maps. …

41mv120: A Stratified Late Archaic Site In Maverick County, Texas, Bradley J. Vierra
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
This report presents the findings of the data recovery program conducted at site 41MV120. The excavation was conducted under a contractual agreement with the Texas Department of Transportation under Texas Antiquities Permit number 1622. A total of 9,147 lithic artifacts, 30,903 g of fire-cracked rock, 1623 g of mussel shells, 457 g of snails, 43 macrobotanical samples, 79 historic artifacts, and 15 bones was recovered from these excavations. 41MV120 is a stratified Late Archaic site dating from ca. 2200-1200 B.P. It was periodically inundated by floodwaters from the Rio Grande which buried a series of occupational levels. The site appears …

An Archaeological Survey For The Bexar County Correctional Facility At Cagnon Road, San Antonio, Texas, Diane A. Cargill, Brett A. Houk, David L. Nickels
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
An archaeological survey was conducted near Cagnon Road by the Center for Archaeological Research of The University of Texas for Bexar County. The project area is the proposed location for the Bexar County Correctional Facility. Intensive pedestrian survey and backhoe trenching were employed to determine the presence and depth of cultural material in the project area. One prehistoric site, characterized by a surface lithic scatter, was identified. Due to thin topsoil and agricultural activities, the site exists in a disturbed context. Furthermore, the presence of shallow Cretaceous age subsoil precludes finding buried in situ cultural material in the project area. …

An Archaeological Survey Of The Proposed Retama/Selma Monopole Project, Bradley J. Vierra, Brett A. Houk, Diane A. Cargill
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
The Center for Archaeological Research (CAR) of The University of Texas at San Antonio conducted an archaeological survey of the proposed Retama/Selma Monopole Project for Southwestern Bell Wireless. The investigations included two backhoe trenches, four shovel tests, and a 100-percent pedestrian survey of the project area and access road. The backhoe trenches and shovel tests did not encounter any subsurface artifacts or features, but the pedestrian survey discovered a lithic scatter in the access road. This site, designated 41GU39, contains an Early Archaic component as evidenced by a Gower point. The artifacts appear to be confined to the surface and …

Unwelcome Heroines : Mao Dun And Yu Dafu's Creations Of A New Chinese Woman, Li Chun, Sylvia Lin
Journal of Modern Literature in Chinese 現代中文文學學報
In this essay, I examine fictional works by two of the most influential and progressive male writers of the period—Mao Dun and Yu Dafu - to explore issues concerning the emergence of the new Chinese woman. My study will focus on Mao Dun’s story, “Chuangzao” [Creation], published in 1928, and Yu Dafu’s short novel, Ta shi yi ge ruo nuzi [She is a weak woman], written in 1932. I look at these writers’ depictions of two different types of woman and contemporary Chinese men’s reactions to a new gender relation. Male intellectuals, while heralding the advance of a new Chinese …

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
Study of the archeology of the Wilson-Leonard site has opened broad new vistas for the reexamination and improved interpretation of regional prehistory. Beyond that, it is of national importance in terms of both data and interpretation (for example, on the Paleoindian era) and the concepts used in its excavation and analysis. It is unique in other ways. In most cases, deep, stratified, multicomponent sites of this integrity are rarely excavated (in Texas, at least) more than once and the potential for long-term research is not fully met. As the reader will learn, Wilson-Leonard was first excavated on a large scale …

Enhanced Dispersion Of Near-Inertial Waves In An Idealized Geostrophic Flow, N. J. Balmforth, Stefan G. Llewellyn Smith, W. R. Young
Journal of Marine Research
This paper presents a simplified model of the process through which a geostrophic flow enhances the vertical propagation of near-inertial activity from the mixed layer into the deeper ocean. The geostrophic flow is idealized as steady and barotropic with a sinusoidal dependence on the north-south coordinate; the corresponding streamfunction takes the form ψ = - Ψ cos (2αy). Near-inertial oscillations are considered in linear theory and disturbances are decomposed into horizontal and vertical normal modes. For this particular flow, the horizontal modes are given in terms of Mathieu functions. The initial-value problem can then be solved by projecting …

We report evidence for cascading of shelf-edge water down the continental slope northwest of Ireland at 55N in February 1996. The measured surface density contrast between shelf-edge and slope waters was 0.01 kg m-3 and the resulting dense plume was 20-50 m thick over the continental slope and penetrated to a depth of 500 m. Cascade waters were warmer but saltier than overlying slope waters and their shelf-edge origin was confirmed by relatively higher chlorophyll concentrations and a distinctive nutrient signature. Other cross-slope transects 100 km north and south of the cascade site showed dense water at the shelf …
