Mechanisms Of Thermorégulation In Flying Bees', Stephen P. Roberts, Jon F. Harrison
Mechanisms Of Thermorégulation In Flying Bees', Stephen P. Roberts, Jon F. Harrison
Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works
SYNOPSIS. Thermoregulation of Elevated Thorax Temperatures is Necessary for Bees to Achieve the High Rates of Power Production Required for Flight and is a Key Factor Allowing Them to Occupy Widely Varying Thermal Environments. However, the Mechanisms by Which Bees Thermoregulate during Flight Are Poorly Understood. Thermoregulation is Accomplished by Balancing Heat Gain and Heat Loss Via the Following Routes: Convection, Evaporation, and Metabolic Heat Production. There Appears to Be a Diversity of Thermoregulatory Mechanisms Employed during Flight among Bee Species. Some Species, Particularly Bambus Spp., Actively Increase the Distribution of Thoracic Heat to the Abdomen during Flight as Air …
Oppositional Defiant Disorder And Conduct Disorder : Different Names For The Same Condition?, Daryl L. Hawkins
Oppositional Defiant Disorder And Conduct Disorder : Different Names For The Same Condition?, Daryl L. Hawkins
Graduate Research Papers
The purpose of this paper is to present a review of the literature related to the proposition that oppositional defiant disorder and conduct disorder are, in essence, the same disorder, with varying degrees of severity. The author of this paper believes that it would make more sense diagnostically to combine these two diagnoses into one category.
This paper will cover a variety of areas related to oppositional defiant disorder and conduct disorder. First, a section on the formulation of the diagnostic criteria is presented. Brief definitions and descriptions of the two disorders follow the diagnostic criteria section. In addition to …

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
Plant pathology and virology lost a pioneer when Lindsay MacLeod Black died on 23 December 1997. We lost a friend and mentor. Black was noted for proving conclusively that a plant virus can multiply in both leafhopper vectors and plants; characterizing unstable, leafhopper-transmitted viruses; and developing insect tissue cultures for studying plant viruses.
Biological And Management Implications Of Fire-Pathogen Interactions In The Giant Sequoia Ecosystem, Douglas D. Piirto, John R. Parmeter Jr., Fields W. Cobb Jr., Kevin L. Piper, Amy C. Workinger, William J. Otrosina
Biological And Management Implications Of Fire-Pathogen Interactions In The Giant Sequoia Ecosystem, Douglas D. Piirto, John R. Parmeter Jr., Fields W. Cobb Jr., Kevin L. Piper, Amy C. Workinger, William J. Otrosina
Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences
An overriding management goal for national parks is the maintenance or, where necessary, the restoration of natural ecological processes. In Sequoia-Kings Canyon and Yosemite National Parks, there is concern about the effects of fire suppression on the giant sequoia-mixed conifer forest ecosystem. The National Park Service is currently using prescribed fire management and prescribed burning as tools to reintroduce fire as a natural process. However, there are questions about the positive and negative effects of reintroducing fire in the giant sequoia-mixed conifer ecosystem. Reintroducing fire in the Sierra Nevada forests needs critical evaluation with respect to the pathogens that affect …

Differences In Lean And Obese Skeletal Muscle Myoblasts Of Adult And Post-Natal La/N (Faf) Rats: A Confocal Description Of The Skeletal Muscle Myoblast, J. Adam Noah
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Mutant strains of obese rats are currently being studied to reveal the mechanisms of increased lipid synthesis and decreased lipid oxidation in these rats. It was originally thought that much of the fat production that leads to obesity is the result of metabolic processes in the liver and adipose tissue. Studies by Kahle et al.3 showed that the liver and adipose tissue account for only 22% and 7% respectively, of total fatty acid synthesis. It was also shown that 21 % of total de novo fatty acid was localized in the postural skeletal muscle.
The dry weight of the …

A Critical Review Of Design And Use Of Field Tent Shelters In Polar Regions, Xiaoying Winston Yan, Marijane E. England, Karl C. Kuivinen, James J. Potter, Nathan S. Krug
Architecture Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity
Polar research teams often spend extended periods of time away from base stations, living and working in remote field camps of portable tents. This article reports results of a survey study conducted in 1996 of polar researchers from the United States. The study was about the design and use of portable field tents being deployed in polar areas with regard to safety, health, and well-being from the user's perspective. Preliminary analysis indicates that there existed a number of areas in design and use of the shelters that contributed to concerns of safety, health, and well-being among a considerable number of …
Survival And Movement Patterns Of Released Tarpon (Megalops Atlanticus), Randy E. Edwards
Survival And Movement Patterns Of Released Tarpon (Megalops Atlanticus), Randy E. Edwards
Gulf of Mexico Science
Survival of tarpon caught and released by anglers near Boca Grande Pass in Southwestern Florida was assessed by sonic tracking. Dart tags attached to ultrasonic transmitters were applied to tarpon just before release. The tarpon were tracked for 1.1-12.1 hr (mean = 4.8 hr), until a corrodible magnesium link allowed the transmitter to detach and float to the surface. Twenty-six of 27 (96.3%) tarpon survived, as determined by continued movement of the fish during the tracking. Fourteen of 25 fish that were caught in Boca Grande Pass remained in the pass, 7 moved into the Gulf of Mexico, and 4 …

First Record Of Reversed Symmetry In Etropus Cyclosquamus And Second Record In Citharichthys Spilopterus (Bothidae, Pisces) In The Gulf Of Mexico, With A Plausible Genetic Explanation For Reversal, Ramon Ruiz-Carus, Steve J. Rider
Gulf of Mexico Science
The discovery of the first instance of reversed eye symmetry in the shelf flounder, Etropus cyclosquamus, and the second instance in the bay whiff, Citharichthys spilopterus, are reported. Two reversed bay whiffs and three reversed shelf flounders were collected in the Gulf of Mexico. Four of these specimens were taken from the vicinity of Fort Walton Beach, Okaloosa County, in northern Florida, and one was taken from Higgs Beach in Key West, Monroe County, Fl. The collection of these fish is reported because of the infrequent occurrence of reversed eye symmetry in flatfishes in the Gulf of Mexico. …

Spatial And Temporal Variations In The Species Composition Of Bycatch Collected During A Striped Mullet (Mugil Cephalus) Survey, Daryl J. Pierce, Julie E. Wallin, Behzad Mahmoudi
Gulf of Mexico Science
We examined the variations in species composition of bycatch collected in an annual spawning-season survey of striped mullet, Mugil cephalus, in Tampa Bay and Charlotte Harbor, FL. Bycatch was defined as all species captured with the collection gear other than the target species, M. cephalus. Variations between habitat types, between months, and between years in the species composition of bycatch captured 1993-96 in this ongoing survey were examined using a nonparametric analysis of variance based on Bray-Curtis similarities. Mugil cephalus was the dominant species collected in both study areas, representing 16%-100% of the annual catch. Lagodon rhomboides …

Evolution Of Marine Artificial Reef Development—A Philosophical Review Of Management Strategies, Richard Christian, Frank Steimle, Richard Stone
Evolution Of Marine Artificial Reef Development—A Philosophical Review Of Management Strategies, Richard Christian, Frank Steimle, Richard Stone
Gulf of Mexico Science
Artificial reefs are a common fishery and aquatic habitat management tool, used in all U.S. coastal states and elsewhere worldwide. Although support for their use is strong among managers and resource users, there is still inadequate scientific information available on their performance in meeting program goals; performance and ecological function information is also weak on many types of natural reefs and fishery-valuable shipwrecks. The wise and responsible use of artificial reefs or habitats by habitat or fishery managers depends on knowing how well they are meeting application objectives; these objectives can be singular or multiple and can involve compliance with …

Otolith Microchemical Fingerprints Of Age-0 Red Snapper, Lutjanus Campechanus, From The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, William F. Patterson Iii, James H. Cowan Jr., Elizabeth Y. Graham, W. Berry Lyons
Gulf of Mexico Science
Red snapper, Lutjanus campechanus, in the northern Gulf of Mexico (Gulf) are believed to constitute a single stock. However, tagging and genetics studies suggest there is little mixing between populations of red snapper in the northern Gulf, and little is known about mixing rates of adult fish. The long-term goal of our work is to determine if age-0 red snapper from different nursery areas have unique microchemical fingerprints in their sagittal otoliths, and if so, can the microchemical fingerprints at the core of adult otoliths be used to determine retrospectively nursery area of origin. Ultimately, we hope to use …

An Experimental Reef Program To Test Designs Of An Artificial Reef For Kelp Mitigation, Larry Deysher, Thomas A. Dean, Robert Grove, Andy Jahn
Gulf of Mexico Science
An artificial reef is being planned to mitigate alleged losses of giant kelp and the invertebrate and fish communities associated with a kelp bed. The project's first step was to initiate comprehensive siting and design studies. A 25-yr time series of kelp surface canopy maps for a 100 km reach of coastline was entered into a GIS database and analyzed in conjunction with geotechnical and human-use information to define ecologically favorable and acceptable sites in the general area. A site was chosen near an area that appeared most promising in the primary study area. This study's field work determined that …
Spatial Variation In Fish Density At Three Petroleum Platforms As Measured With Dual-Beam Hydroacoustics, David R. Stanley, Charles A. Wilson
Spatial Variation In Fish Density At Three Petroleum Platforms As Measured With Dual-Beam Hydroacoustics, David R. Stanley, Charles A. Wilson
Gulf of Mexico Science
Despite the number and ubiquitous placement of petroleum platforms in the northern Gulf of Mexico, little information exists on associated fisheries resources due to the difficulties of sampling these sites with traditional fish census methods. From 1994 to 1996 dual-beam hydroacoustics were employed on quarterly research trips to measure the density and in situ target strengths of fishes associated with petroleum platforms in 20, 60, and 219 m of water. Density varied significantly with platform, distance from the platform, depth, and platform side. Platforms on the continental shelf had a near-field area of influence of approximately 18 m, whereas the …

Movement Of Red Snapper, Lutjanus Campechanus, In The North Central Gulf Of Mexico: Potential Effects Of Hurricanes, J. Carter Watterson, William F. Patterson Iii, Robert L. Shipp, James H. Cowan Jr.
Gulf of Mexico Science
Site fidelity and movement of red snapper, Lutjanus campechanus, were estimated from a tagging study conducted off the coast of Alabama from March 1995 to January 1997. Red snapper were caught using rod and reel over nine artificial reef sites, with three reefs each located at 21-m, 27-m, and 32-m depths. During the study, 1,604 fish were tagged, and 174 recaptures were made of 167 individuals. On 4 October 1995, the eye of Hurricane Opal passed within 40 km of the artificial reef sites. When recaptures were stratified according to whether or not they were at liberty during Opal, …

High-Resolution Multibeam Bathymetry Of East And West Flower Gardens And Stetson Banks, Gulf Of Mexico, James V. Gardner, Larry A. Mayer, John E. Hughes Clark, Art Kleiner
Gulf of Mexico Science
The 1990s have seen rapid advances in seafloor mapping technology. Multibeam sonars are now capable of mapping a wide range of water depths with beams as narrow as 1°, and provide up to a 150° swath. When these multibeam sonars are coupled with an extremely accurate vehicle motion sensor and very precise navigation, they are capable of producing unprecedented images of the seafloor. This technology was used in December 1997 to map the East and West Flower Gardens and Stetson Banks, Gulf of Mexico. The results from this survey provide the most accurate maps of these areas yet produced and …
Ecological Implications Of Hydrography And Circulation To The Flower Garden Banks, Northwest Gulf Of Mexico, Alexis Lugo-Fernández
Ecological Implications Of Hydrography And Circulation To The Flower Garden Banks, Northwest Gulf Of Mexico, Alexis Lugo-Fernández
Gulf of Mexico Science
A synthesis of historic and new physical oceanographic observations on the Louisiana-Texas shelf helps change the circulation paradigm around the Flower Garden Banks. The location of these banks near the shelf edge shields them from the direct influence of the Mississippi and Atchafalaya Rivers and summer hypoxic episodes but places them under direct influence of deepwater physical processes. These deepwater processes control temperature and salinity within ranges that are adequate for coral growth; however, summer temperatures can exceed thermal tolerance limits as evidenced by coral bleaching episodes. Currents near the Banks have longshore and significant offshore components. Loop Current (LC) …

Fertilization In Broadcast-Spawning Corals Of The Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary, Derek K. Hagman, Stephen R. Gittings, Peter D. Vize
Gulf of Mexico Science
Broadcast spawning is considered to be the dominant reproductive strategy for reef corals, but little is known about two critical postspawning processes, fertilization and early larval development. Instead, most efforts have focused on dispersal and recruitment. Since 1993, we have examined coral fertilization and development at the Flower Garden Banks, which contain two isolated reefs with predictable and dramatic annual mass spawning events in the northwestern Gulf of Mexico. Observations of in vitro fertilization indicate that the hermaphroditic scleractinian species Colpophyllia natans, Diploria strigosa, Monfastraea faveolata, and M. franksi all have high fertilization potentials when outcrossing. However, …
