Vcu Voice (1998-01-12)
VCU Voice, 1988-1998
VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

A Vacuolar V–T-Snare Complex, The Predominant Form In Vivo And On Isolated Vacuoles, Is Disassembled And Activated For Docking And Fusion, Christian Ungermann, Benjamin J. Nichols, Hugh R. B. Pelham, William Wickner
Dartmouth Scholarship
Homotypic vacuole fusion in yeast requires Sec18p (N-ethylmaleimide-sensitive fusion protein [NSF]), Sec17p (soluble NSF attachment protein [alpha-SNAP]), and typical vesicle (v) and target membrane (t) SNAP receptors (SNAREs). We now report that vacuolar v- and t-SNAREs are mainly found with Sec17p as v-t-SNARE complexes in vivo and on purified vacuoles rather than only transiently forming such complexes during docking, and disrupting them upon fusion. In the priming reaction, Sec18p and ATP dissociate this v-t-SNARE complex, accompanied by the release of Sec17p. SNARE complex structure governs each functional aspect of priming, as the v-SNARE regulates the rate of Sec17p release and, …

Beyond The Grave –The Use And Meaning Of Human Body Parts: A Historical Introduction, Susan C. Lawrence
Beyond The Grave –The Use And Meaning Of Human Body Parts: A Historical Introduction, Susan C. Lawrence
Department of History: Faculty Publications
In this essay I outline the wide range of ways that human beings have used body parts in the past, primarily within Anglo-American cultural frameworks and experiences. I concentrate on practices much more than on the formation of theories (e.g., development of abstract legal perspectives or philosophical analyses of the "body") or the expression of particular ethical principles (e.g., should body parts be used? should medical researchers be allowed to use tissue samples stored from days before informed consent?). A focus on historical actions, including suggestive comments on how these actions made sense at particular times and places, offers us …

Chiral Separations Of Indan, Tetralin And Benzosuberan Derivatives By Capillary Electrophoresis, Kyung Hyun Gahm, Jauh Tzuoh Lee, Lisa W. Chang, Daniel W. Armstrong
Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
Several indan, tetralin and benzosuberan derivatives of diverse polarities were enantio-resolved by the use of sulfated β-cyclodextrins (CDs) or mixtures of sulfated β-CDs and γ-CD as chiral additives in capillary electrophoresis. Mixtures of sulfated 13-CDs and hydroxypropy1 β- CDs were also successfully utilized for enantiomeric and diastereomeric separations of some of the tetralin derivatives with two stereogenic centers. Both neutral and anionic analytes were resolved in the reversed electrophoretic polarity mode. Cationic amino derivatives of indan and tetralin were enantio-resolved in the conventional electrophoretic polarity mode.

Construction And Analysis Of Mutant Hsv-1 Viruses Having Mutations In The Yy1 And/Or Sp1 Binding Sites Of The Glycoprotein D (Gd) Gene Promoter, Sabine Ludwig
Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study was to construct and analyze four recombinant herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) viruses having mutations in the YY1 and/or Sp1 binding sites of the glycoprotein D (gD) gene promoter and a control virus containing a wild type (wt) gD promoter. The YY1 and Sp1 binding sites in the HSV-1-gD gene promoter have been shown in earlier in vitro experiments to be essential for virus-induced gD gene expression with Sp1 playing the major role. The first part of my project required the construction of four different plasmids containing a HSV-1 sequence that included the gD …

The Evolution Of Primate Malaria Parasites Based On The Gene Encoding Cytochrome B From The Linear Mitochondrial Genome, Ananias A. Escalante, Denise E. Freeland, William E. Collins, Altaf A. Lal
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials
We report a phylogenetic analysis of primate malaria parasites based on the gene encoding the cytochrome b protein from the mitochondrial genome. We have studied 17 species of Plasmodium, including 14 parasitic in primates. In our analysis, four species were used for rooting the Plasmodium phylogenetic tree: two from closely related genera (Hepatocystis sp. and Haemoproteus columbae) and two other Apicomplexa (Toxoplasma gondii and Theileria parva). We found that primate malaria parasites form a monophyletic group, with the only exception being the Plasmodium falciparum–Plasmodium reichenowi lineage. Phylogenetic analyses that include two species …
