Biodegradation Of Congo Red By Phanerochaete Chrysosporium, Matthew Tatarko, John A. Bumpus Mar 1998

Biodegradation Of Congo Red By Phanerochaete Chrysosporium, Matthew Tatarko, John A. Bumpus

Faculty Publications

The azo dye Congo Red, was degraded extensively by the wood rotting basidiomycete, Phanerochaete chrysosporium in agitated liquid cultures and in solid malt agar cultures. Upon addition of Congo Red to agitated liquid cultures, the dye was adsorbed to the mycelial pellets in both ligninolytic and non-ligninolytic cultures followed by extensive degradation only in the ligninolytic cultures. This fungus, grown from conidiospores, readily degraded up to 718 μM (500 mg/l) Congo Red in 2.0% malt agar. Decolorization of Congo Red in malt agar plates was suppressed by the addition of supplemental nutrient nitrogen indicating that the lignin degrading system of …

The Catholic University In Modern Academe: Challenge And Dilemma, James Turner Mar 1998

The Catholic University In Modern Academe: Challenge And Dilemma, James Turner

Journal of Catholic Education

How can the Catholic university reconstruct itself to bring the resources of Catholic tradition to bear on our common task of rebuilding the house of learning? The Catholic university needs to inhabit the domain of secular learning and Christian knowledge. The participation of Catholic intellectual and universities in the postmodern dialogue will benefit the entire intellectual community.

Games To Teach Mathematical Modelling, James A. Powell, Jim S. Cangelosi, Ann M. Harris Mar 1998

Games To Teach Mathematical Modelling, James A. Powell, Jim S. Cangelosi, Ann M. Harris

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

We discuss the use of in-class games to create realistic situations for mathematical modelling. Two games are presented which are appropriate for use in post-calculus settings. The first game reproduces predator-prey oscillations and the second game simulates disease propagation in a mixing population. When used creatively these games encourage students to model realistic data and apply mathematical concepts to understanding the data.

A Review Of Instruments For Assessing Family History, Timothy P. Melchert Mar 1998

A Review Of Instruments For Assessing Family History, Timothy P. Melchert

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

The influence of family history on one's development has long been a focus of psychological theory, research, and practice. In recent years, however, conceptualizations of family influences on development have evolved considerably, and there has also been increased concern about the reliability of individuals' memory for their childhoods in general. Current knowledge regarding these and other issues are applied to reviewing the instruments that have been developed to assess aspects of family history. The complexity of this type of assessment is emphasized, and a variety of problems with the reliability and validity of the currently available instruments are discussed. Suggestions …

Accuracy Of The Ovulon Fertility Monitor To Predict And Detect Ovulation, Richard J. Fehring, William D. Schlaff Mar 1998

Accuracy Of The Ovulon Fertility Monitor To Predict And Detect Ovulation, Richard J. Fehring, William D. Schlaff

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

The purpose of this pilot study was to correlate the three biologic markers of the Ovulon fertility monitor (a long-term predictive peak about 6 days before ovulation, a short-term predictive peak about 1 day before ovulation, and a nadir at the time of ovulation) with the peak in cervical mucus and the luteinizing hormone (LH) surge in the urine. Ten volunteer subjects (mean age 30.2 years) monitored their cervical-vaginal mucus, the surge of LH in the urine with a home assay test, and their vaginal electrical readings (with Ovulon monitors) on a daily basis for one to four menstrual cycles. …

Deliberative Democracy, Overlapping Consensus, And Same-Sex Marriage, Linda C. Mcclain Mar 1998

Deliberative Democracy, Overlapping Consensus, And Same-Sex Marriage, Linda C. Mcclain

Faculty Scholarship

A pressing concern in political and constitutional theory is how to construct a model of justification in law and politics that offers methods for securing agreement and social cooperation in the face of moral pluralism. A common goal of this work is to elaborate the requirements of deliberative democracy, that is, a model of democratic self-government that "asks citizens and officials to justify public policy by giving reasons that can be accepted by those who are bound by it."' Two fundamental questions are: (1) are there any limits to the grounds to which citizens may appeal or the reasons that …

Myosin Heavy Chain Isoforms And Dynamic Contractile Properties: Skeletal Versus Smooth Muscle, Thomas J. Eddinger Mar 1998

Myosin Heavy Chain Isoforms And Dynamic Contractile Properties: Skeletal Versus Smooth Muscle, Thomas J. Eddinger

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Myosin, one of the primary contractile muscle proteins, displays molecular, enzymatic, structural, functional and regulatory variability. This variability has been shown to account for a significant amount of the functional uniqueness of skeletal and smooth muscle. However, the universal generation of force and/or shortening by these two muscle types belies the ever-increasing number of known distinct differences that bring this about. Thus, the notion that the functional roles of skeletal and smooth muscle, their development and regulation, all appear to be uniquely applicable for their physiological purpose no longer appears heretical. This manuscript presents a cursory overview of the numerous …

Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art, Alan D. Manning Mar 1998

Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art, Alan D. Manning

Faculty Publications

INSIGHTS about professional communication may come from odd and unexpected places. McCloud's Understanding Comics (hereafter UC) is a case in point. Despite the juvenile connotations evoked by any discussion of comic books, the theory of visual communication presented in UC arguably rivals the best of contemporary semiotics (that is, the study of how we make meaning out of gestures, words, paragraphs, pictures, and so on).
