Are Microhabitat Preferences Of Coexisting Species Under Selection And Adaptive?, Thomas E. Martin
Are Microhabitat Preferences Of Coexisting Species Under Selection And Adaptive?, Thomas E. Martin
Wildlife Biology Faculty Publications
Microhabitat preferences are assumed to be adaptive, suggesting that fitness is higher in preferred microhabitats and potentially reflecting natural selection on habitat choices. I examined microhabitat preferences and adaptiveness of preferences for seven bird species coexisting in high elevation snowmelt drainages based on study of microhabitat and survival of 1556 nests. Habitat features in the nest patch differed from both random and non-use (sites centered on the same plant species as used for the nest) sites within each bird species, indicating nonrandom nest site choice. Bird species within a nesting guild (ground, shrub) also differed from each other based on …

Experimental Evolution Of Complexity: In Vitro Emergence Of Intermolecular Ribozyme Interactions, Martin M. Hanczyc, Robert L. Dorit
Experimental Evolution Of Complexity: In Vitro Emergence Of Intermolecular Ribozyme Interactions, Martin M. Hanczyc, Robert L. Dorit
Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
In the course of evolving variants of the Tetrahymena thermophila Group I ribozyme for improved DNA cleavage in vitro, we witnessed the unexpected emergence of a derived molecular species, capable of acting as a partner for the ribozyme, but no longer autocatalytic. This new RNA species exhibits a deletion in the catalytic core and participates in a productive intermolecular interaction with an active ribozyme, thus insuring its survival in the population. These novel RNA molecules have evolved a precise catalytic interaction with the Group I ribozyme and depend for their survival on the continued presence of active catalysts. This interaction …

Sailing New Seas, Paul J. Reason, David G. Freymann
Newport Papers
This Newport paper presents the ideas of one of the Navy's most senior leaders. Admiral Reason's topic is the course the United States Navy should steer in the "typhoon of change" characterizing today's and tomorrow's world. Admiral Reason proposes a new way to think about the fleet as a whole, one that discards the "industrial age model" in favor of the "flight deck paradigm" of a high-performance organization operating at the edge of chaos.

The Age Of Revolutions, Claudia Kennedy Lieutenant General
The Age Of Revolutions, Claudia Kennedy Lieutenant General
Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies
Lieutenant General Claudia Kennedy, the Army Deputy Chief of Staff for Intelligence, postulates a future world where challenges to the national security and national interests of the United States will come from many sources. Not only will the armed forces of the United States have to be prepared to counter attacks by nation-states with armed forces equipped with modern weapons, they must also be ready to address a wide range of challenges across the spectrum from urban warlords to narco-terrorists. Today there is a great deal of talk about focusing on the high end of the threat and relying on …

Determination Of The Asymmetry Parameter And Scattering Coefficient Of Turbid Media From Spatially Resolved Reflectance Measurments, Matthew R. Jones, Yukio Yamada
Determination Of The Asymmetry Parameter And Scattering Coefficient Of Turbid Media From Spatially Resolved Reflectance Measurments, Matthew R. Jones, Yukio Yamada
Faculty Publications
We present a technique for determining the asymmetry parameter and scattering coefficient of turbid media from spatially resolved reflectance measurements. This technique will contribute to the development of medical applications in which it is necessary to predict the distribution and propagation of light in tissue. Based on Monte Carlo simulations, we derived correlations which relate the reduced scattering coefficient and the asymmetry parameter to the relative reflectance curve. Initial estimates of the optical properties are obtained from these correlations. Final values are obtained by adjusting the optical parameters and repeating the Monte Carlo simulations until the simulated reflectance pattern matches …
The Relationship Between Cobalamin Deficiency And Neurological Dysfunction In Older Adults, Marion Bachra
The Relationship Between Cobalamin Deficiency And Neurological Dysfunction In Older Adults, Marion Bachra
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The prevalence of cobalamin (Obi) deficiency among older adults is higher than among younger adults, and is estimated to be between 14% and 23%. Persistent Cbl deficiency can cause a variety of neurological deficits. Neurological dysfunction occurs commonly among older adults, raising the research question whether or not there is a relationship between the high prevalence of Cbl deficiency and neurological dysfunction among older adults.
This case-control study enrolled 120 subjects with and without neurological dysfunction through the Faculty Medical Offices' Internal Medicine and Neurology Outpatient Clinics. All subjects received a neurological and cognitive exam. Blood samples were drawn to …
Cognitive And Psychophysiological Investigation Of Chronic Pain, Amy D. Clegg
Cognitive And Psychophysiological Investigation Of Chronic Pain, Amy D. Clegg
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Using Bower’s (1981) associative network model of mood and memory, and Klinger’s theory of current concerns, it was hypothesized that the experience of chronic pain may be functionally similar to a mood state and that the chronicity of the condition may maintain it as a current concern. Specifically, it was hypothesized that chronic pain patients would not show any differences in reaction time and accuracy when making lexical decisions about pain-related, neutral, and nonwords. However, it was anticipated that chronic pain patients would show differences in physiological responding (particularly, increased skin conductance responses) when compared to controls. Results confirmed that …
Ventilation Behavior Of The Mantis Shrimp, Hemisquilla Ensigera Californiensis In Hypoxic Burrows, Tamara L. Richter
Ventilation Behavior Of The Mantis Shrimp, Hemisquilla Ensigera Californiensis In Hypoxic Burrows, Tamara L. Richter
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The burrow-dwelling mantis shrimp, Hemisquilla ensigera californiensis, is an environmentally challenged marine species due to the fact it inhabits burrows located beneath the surface of the sediment where oxygen pressure is low and easily depleted. This experiment revealed that burrow oxygen pressure (pO2) is frequently hypoxic and can become anoxic. Average pO2 within the burrow is between 40-50 mm Hg and may drop below 10 mm Hg even if the burrow isn't capped. When capped, p02 rapidly drops to 0 mm Hg within two hours. Low pO2 does not result in decreased animal activity, …
Comparison Of Seeding And Sod-Transplant Methods For Restoring Tallgrass Prairie In Southeastern Nebraska., Gary P. Sullivan
Comparison Of Seeding And Sod-Transplant Methods For Restoring Tallgrass Prairie In Southeastern Nebraska., Gary P. Sullivan
Student Work
Data were collected in Fall, 1993 from a 55-year-old re-established grassland to determine the degree of success of seeding and sodding in re-establishing native prairie species. Species Richness of native species was highest in one seeded re-established site (S = 44), but lowest in a second re-established site (S = 23). Species Richness was second highest at the Native site (S = 42). There was a significant difference (P ≤ 0.05) in Species Diversity between the one seeded and the native treatments. The high diversity in re-established treatments is consistent with that expected of the Intermediate-Disturbance-Hypothesis suggesting the seral nature …

Pollinator Selection, Quantitative Genetics, And Predicted Evolutionary Responses Of Floral Traits In Penstemon Centranthifolius (Scrophulariaceae), Randall J. Mitchell, Ruth G. Shaw, Nickolas M. Waser
Biology Faculty Research
Much of the remarkable diversity of angiosperm flowers is thought to have evolved in response to selection by animal pollinators. Selection during pollination can readily be documented, but the extent to which it leads to evolutionary change depends on the genetic basis of floral traits. Here we combine estimates of genetic variance and covariance for several traits of flowers and inflorescences in a wild plant species, with estimates of natural selection by hummingbird pollinators. Analysis of phenotypic selection through two components of pollination success indicates direct selection of plants toward larger size and toward bearing shorter flowers that produce more …

Development Of A Blocking Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay For Detection Of Serum Antibodies To O157 Antigen Of Escherichia Coli., W Laegreid, M Hoffman, J Keen, R Elder, J Kwang
Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers
The O157 antigen of Escherichia coli shares structural elements with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) antigens of other bacterial species, notably Brucella abortus and Yersinia enterocolitica 09, a fact that confounds the interpretation of assays for anti-O157 antibodies. To address this problem, a blocking enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (bELISA) was designed with E. coli O157:H7 LPS as the antigen and a monoclonal antibody specific for E. coli O157, designated 13B3, as the competing antibody. The bELISA had equivalent sensitivity to, and significantly higher specificity than, the indirect ELISA (iELISA), detecting anti-O157 antibodies in sera from cattle experimentally inoculated with O157:H7. Only 13% of sera …

Subcellular Localization Of Mineralocorticoid Receptors In Living Cells: Effects Of Receptor Agonists And Antagonists, Géza Fejes-Tóth, David Pearce, Anikó Náray-Fejes-Tóth
Dartmouth Scholarship
Results on the subcellular localization of the mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) have been controversial. To determine the subcellular distribution and trafficking of the MR in living cells after binding of agonists and antagonists, we expressed a MR-green fluorescent protein (GFP) chimera in mammalian cells lacking endogenous MR. The GFP-tagged MR (GFP-MR) remained transcriptionally active, as determined in cotransfection experiments with the MR-responsive reporter, TAT3-LUC. The subcellular localization of GFP-MR was monitored by fluorescence time-lapse microscopy. In the absence of hormone, MR was present both in the cytoplasm and nucleus. Aldosterone induced a rapid nuclear accumulation of the MR. Aldosterone-bound GFP-MR was …

A Study On The Uptake And Voltammetric Determination Of Trace Heavy Metals In The Treated Wastewater In Abu-Dhabi Area, Salem Rashed Salem Al-Hassani
Theses
Wastewater reuse has a positive and negative environmental impacts and possibly it can have an important role to play in water resources management, as a substituent for freshwater in irrigation. However, the presence of the toxic heavy metals in domestic sewage and in industrial effluents discharge to sewers, wastewater can create unacceptable health and environmental risks. Therefore, the present work includes the determination of the toxic heavy metals in some treated wastewater samples collected from Abu-Dhabi area using polarographic and voltammetric techniques. Differential pulse polarography and anodic stripping voltammetry are well established techniques for trace determination of heavy metals content …
On The Practical Meaning Of Secularism, John M. Finnis
On The Practical Meaning Of Secularism, John M. Finnis
Journal Articles
The secularism I consider in this Article is a public reality, the secularism which shapes public debate, deliberation, dispositions, and action, and dominates our education and culture. I shall be considering the ideas, not the people; and people are often less consistent, and better, than their theories. There is no profit in estimating whether secularism's dominance now is greater than in Plato's Athens or lesser than in Stalin's Leningrad. There is certainly a rich field for historical investigation of the particular and often peculiar forms taken by western secularism under the influence of the faith it supplants. But I shall …

The complete assignment of the proton chemical shifts obtained by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy of de-O-acetylated glucuronoxylomannans (GXMs) from Cryptococcus neoformanspermitted the high-resolution determination of the total structure of any GXM. Six structural motifs based on an α-(1→3)-mannotriose substituted with variable quantities of 2-O-β- and 4-O-β-xylopyranosyl and 2-O-β-glucopyranosyluronic acid were identified. The chemical shifts of only the anomeric protons of the mannosyl residues served as structure reporter groups (SRG) for the identification and quantitation of the six triads present in any GXM. The assigned protons for the mannosyl residues resonated at clearly …
Faith And The Attorney-Client Relationship: Muslim Perspective, Azizah Y. Al-Hibri
Faith And The Attorney-Client Relationship: Muslim Perspective, Azizah Y. Al-Hibri
Law Faculty Publications
Three significant factors have converged to contribute significantly to the state of spiritual impoverishment, fragmentation, and work-place alienation experienced by professional people of faith in this country. They are: the emergence of material secularism as the dominant ideology, the uncritical acceptance of technological reductionism, and the over-broad interpretation of the public/private distinction. I shall discuss these factors from a spiritual perspective generally, and an Islamic one specifically. I shall also present an Islamic point of view on of the attorney-client relationship, critique Professor Allegretti's proposal, and mention some of the problems that lawyers of faith must consider in their daily …

The usefulness of the concept of JEBAR, the joint effect of baroclinicity and relief, in large-scale ocean dynamics is critically analyzed. The authors address two questions. Does the JEBAR term properly characterize the joint impact of stratification and bottom topography on the ocean circulation? Do estimates of the JEBAR term from observational data allow reliable diagnostic calculations? The authors give a negative answer to the first question. The JEBAR term need not give a true measure of the effect of bottom relief in a stratified ocean. A simple two-layer model provides examples. As to the second question, it is demonstrated …
