The Community-Based Management Of Fisheries In Atlantic Canada: A Legislative Proposal, Raymond Maccallum Apr 1998

The Community-Based Management Of Fisheries In Atlantic Canada: A Legislative Proposal, Raymond Maccallum

Dalhousie Law Journal

The crises in Canada's fisheries demonstrate the failure of Canadian fisheries management practices to achieve their public policy objectives. The author proposes that a new fisheries management regime, based on principles of community-based management, should be implemented to better ensure the sustainability of both the fisheries and fishing communities. A draft bill is provided to establish a specific framework around which to discuss those values and interests that should be promoted and protected by legislation, and how legislation can be used to establish and nurture a new community-based management regime.

Bodies Of Law, Moira Mcconnell Apr 1998

Bodies Of Law, Moira Mcconnell

Dalhousie Law Journal

"Don't judge a book by its cover" is a maxim most frequently recited to children by adults to explain the idea that one should not judge people on the basis of appearance. This maxim captures the gist of the topic explored in Alan Hyde's Bodies of Law. Bodies of Law seeks to expose the fact that we simultaneously view a person as an entity distinct from her or his physical manifestation while our understanding and response to a person is affected by our perceptions and judgments regarding their physical characteristics.

A Multiplicity Of Goals In A Migrant Household, Patrick James Maher Apr 1998

A Multiplicity Of Goals In A Migrant Household, Patrick James Maher

Masters Theses

This paper explores data collected on Mexican migrants who were living in southwestern Michigan during the Spring and Summer of 1994. Its purpose is to examine the role of the family among one migrant household and to determine whether the findings coincide with other studies completed on Mexican migrant families.

The data examined indicates two major problems in applying its findings to current migration literature. The first involves the concept of a 'united family unit' and the second relates to the notion of a 'common family goal.' The data suggests that the theory on which these concepts are based must …

The Effects Of Pretherapy Information On The Client's Perception Of A Counselor's Values And Receptiveness To Treatment, James C. Thomas Apr 1998

The Effects Of Pretherapy Information On The Client's Perception Of A Counselor's Values And Receptiveness To Treatment, James C. Thomas

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Over the past thirty years there has been a growing awareness in the psychological community that a counselor's personal values, including religious values, influences the therapy relationship. Despite this awareness, few counselors have made it a practice of sharing their value orientation with their clients. One way of helping clients make informed choices about whether they want to enter therapy with a certain counselor is to give them information before therapy begins about a counselor's personal values that may influence the therapy relationship. This study partially replicates the work of Lewis and Epperson ( l 991) and shows that pre …

Molecular Staging Of Colorectal Cancer: K-Ras Mutation Analysis Of Lymph Nodes Upstages Dukes’ B2 Patients, Jennifer S. Thebo Apr 1998

Molecular Staging Of Colorectal Cancer: K-Ras Mutation Analysis Of Lymph Nodes Upstages Dukes’ B2 Patients, Jennifer S. Thebo

Dissertations

The successful treatment of colorectal cancer depends upon the ability of staging systems to identify patients who are at risk for recurrence. The currently used systems fail in a significant number of patients. Multiple attempts have been made to improve upon these systems in order to provide better treatment for at-risk patients.

A variety of oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes have been implicated in colorectal cancer. Mutations in one of these, K-ras, occur in 40-60% of colorectal carcinomas. However, the relationship between specific mutations and clinical outcome is unclear.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether or not …

Specific Handling Practices For Processing Big Game In The Field, David E. Naugle, Kenneth F. Higgins Apr 1998

Specific Handling Practices For Processing Big Game In The Field, David E. Naugle, Kenneth F. Higgins

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Why should hunters educate themselves about proper handling of big game? Annually, 10.7 million sportsmen and women spend 127 million days afield hunting big game. Meats of big game are a healthy and appetizing source of dietary protein. Hunters unfamiliar with proper handling practices for processing wild game, however, run a risk of contracting food-borne illnesses. Big game transported from the field to the freezer may become contaminated with bacteria during processing. Unsafe handling practices by hunters that lead to the contamination of meats usually occur along “critical control points.” An awareness of critical control points can help ensure that …

A Sense Of Entitlement To Self In Relationships: An Elaboration Of Attachment And Feminist Object Relations Theories, Suzanne Elaine Wolfe Apr 1998

A Sense Of Entitlement To Self In Relationships: An Elaboration Of Attachment And Feminist Object Relations Theories, Suzanne Elaine Wolfe

Dissertations

Many women who present for psychotherapy with symptoms of depression and/or anxiety describe a common pattern of involvement in current and past nonmutual relationships. This phenomenon is described and explored in light of a new conception of entitlement. It is proposed that one’s sense of entitlement is a relative relational position along a continuum from overentitlement through healthy entitlement to underentitlement, and that these women are often underentitled in their adult relationships. Their relationships are often with overentitled others, and they may hold internal convictions that their place in relationships is to be underentitled. A particular pattern contributing to underentitlement …

Areas of impact that were addressed included school performance measures of student success rates, attendance rates, and discipline referrals as well as affective measures of levels of students' active engagement in learning activities, the variety of teaching and learning modes used, and the amount of individualized teacher attention given to students.

The research population consisted of six high schools in south and central …

An Analysis Of Fecal Coliform Bacteria As A Water Quality Indicator, Janet Heyl Vail Apr 1998

An Analysis Of Fecal Coliform Bacteria As A Water Quality Indicator, Janet Heyl Vail

Dissertations

The focus of this study is to assess the efficacy of fecal coliform bacteria as a microbiological water quality indicator. The scientific and educational context of fecal coliform bacteria is explored through analysis of large sets of water quality data, focused field monitoring projects, and review of commonly used resources for school-based and volunteer water-related studies. Analyzed data sets include long term sampling (10 years), multiple sites, daily samples, storm event samples, and other parameters monitored in parallel with bacteria. Special attention is given to data sets from Kent County, Michigan. A background reference site in Michigan unimpacted by humans …

The Establishment Of Standard Methods And Experimental Procedures For The Prototypical Icp/Tof-Ms Using An Icp-Aes, Joseph Riley

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

The ICP-AES was used to develop a standard test method for the preparation of samples for analysis purposes, a method that could also be transposed onto the new prototypical ICP/TOF-MS. Whereas both of these instruments are analytical spectroscopic instruments and use the ICP's plasma as an energy source, the ICP/TOF-MS also has a mass spectrometer attached to it. This addition gives the instrument better reliability, accuracy, and precision in analysis as well as faster analysis time. Since the ICP-AES is a precursor of the ICP/TOF-MS, it can be used to develop a standard development method. The experiment involved using a …

Being Female Can Be Fatal: An Examination Of India's Ban On Pre-Natal Gender Testing, Andrea Krugman Apr 1998

Being Female Can Be Fatal: An Examination Of India's Ban On Pre-Natal Gender Testing, Andrea Krugman

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

The note examines India's 1996 Pre-natal Diagnostic Techniques (Regulation and Prevention of Misuse) Act, which aims to address the severe gender imbalance caused by prenatal sex selection and female feticide. Despite the Act's intentions, its effectiveness is hindered by deep-rooted cultural preferences for male children, economic pressures, and insufficient enforcement mechanisms. The analysis highlights the need for broader societal changes, including education and economic empowerment for women, to effectively combat gender discrimination.
