The purpose of this study was to determine if there was in fact a growing number of minority students in special education, if minority staff in special education were being hired in proportion to the number of minority students coming to this particular school district, and finally, whether or not the district was addressing cultural diversity among the staff and student populations due to the increase in minority students.

Initially, a questionnaire was developed for the students. One site in the district was targeted because it had thirty-five emotionally disturbed students. Nineteen emotionally disturbed high school minority students were interviewed. …

The impetus for this dissertation was an interest in geographic variation in Microtus longicaudus with a particular focus on populations in the Alexander Archipelago of southeastern Alaska. To establish a framework for interpreting intraspecific variation in M. longicaudus, I examined the phylogenetics of 28 species of the genus Microtus, including all North American species (Chapters 2 and 4). That study, which corroborates a rapid pulse of diversification noted in the fossil record, necessitated a deeper phylogenetic perspective. Thus, a third objective of the dissertation was to investigate relationships among genera of arvicolines within the framework of other murid rodents. I …

Sulfur gases and aerosols are important in the atmosphere because they play major roles in acid rain, arctic haze, air pollution, and climate. Globally, man-made and natural sulfur emissions are comparable in magnitude. The major natural source is dimethyl sulfide (DMS) from the oceans, where it originates from the degradation of dimethysulfonioproprionate (DMSP), a compound produced by marine phytoplankton. Global budgets of natural sulfur emissions are uncertain because of (1) the uncertainty in the traditional method used to estimate DMS sea-to-air flux, and (2) the spatial and temporal variability of DMS sea-to-air flux. The salmon harvest on the Copper River, Alaska, is shared by commercial, sport, personal-use and subsistence fishers. An important and reoccurring issue is the allocation of salmon harvest among these user groups. Economic analyses, along with biological, legal, social and cultural considerations, have the potential to help policy makers appreciate the consequences of alternative allocations. Although economic analyses of the commercial and sport fisheries have been completed, no comparable studies exist for the personal-use and subsistence fisheries. The 65 ha Big Windy Hot Springs Research Natural Area (RNA) in the Steese National Conservation Area of central Alaska is managed by the Bureau of Land Management. It contains a vent that issues hot water at about 61° C flowing at about 8 liters per minute from the largest of a system of small springs and seeps. Geothermal water seeping over the face of a cliff has intensely weathered the local granitic bedrock into gruss. The fracture of massive boulders from the possibly fault-related cliff is one of the most distinctive features of the RNA. Small boulders from the …

A quantitative assessment of geogrids as base reinforcing material in paved roads is clearly necessary when a design is needed and decisions are to be made as a consequence. Two full scale single wheel load tests were conducted to determine the performance of geogrids as base reinforcing materials in paved roads. These two full scale tests were set up with different base thicknesses, material properties, loading conditions and geogrids. Load, speed, and direction of a test cart were controlled with a computer. Ecological processes are responsible for vegetation trajectory within the boreal forest landscape of interior Alaska. The reproductive response of boreal forest to disturbance controls vegetation trajectory. Boreal forest reproduction dynamics are influenced by both biotic and abiotic factors, acting upon the spatio-temporal dynamics of the landscape. Understanding these factors and how the boreal forest responds, both spatially and temporally, is critical for the development of accurate models of regional and global vegetation dynamics. I developed a geographic model of the early post-disturbance seedling regeneration pattern of upland white spruce ecosystems in interior Alaska. The model was developed and runs within …

Screw Configuration Effects During Twin-Screw Extrusion Of Starchy And Proteinaceous Materials, Akhilesh Gautam

This study investigated the effects of screw configuration and feed composition during extrusion of starchy and proteinaceous materials. All experiments were carried out in a twin-screw extruder with a length/diameter ratio of 32:1. The screw speed, feed flow rate, and moisture content were 400 rpm, 12 kg/h, and 15%, respectively. Kneading block (KB) and reverse screw elements (RSE) were placed at different locations in the 200 mm experimental zone near the die, where the temperature was maintained at $\rm 150\sp\circ C.$ An on-line method for measurement of residence time distribution (RTD) in a food extruder was developed, tested, and validated. …

Genetic Linkage Mapping Of Allozyme Loci In Even- And Odd-Year Pink Salmon (Oncorhynchus Gorbuscha), Makoto P. Matsuoka

Genetic linkage maps of allozyme loci were constructed in even- and odd-year pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha). The loci were mapped based on the results of gene-centromere (G-C) mapping and joint segregation analysis. For G-C mapping, 160 gynogenetic progeny families were produced, and 8,080 progeny from 74 families were analyzed using starch gel electrophoresis and histochemical stain techniques. G-C distances of 37 loci ranged from 0.5 cM at sMDH-A1* to 50 cM at sMDH-B2*. Eleven loci showed high G-C distances (>45 cM), indicating that one crossover on one chromosome arm is usual in pink salmon. Variation observed at sMDH-B1,2* in …
