Wilderness education is considered a key response to abate physical impacts caused by wilderness recreationists, but education's impacts upon the psychological values of wilderness are unknown. This investigation used a wilderness purism scale to measure how minimum impact instruction affects the intensity and quality of a student's wilderness experience and the relation of these expectations and preferences to appreciation, knowledge, and concern for the environment as a whole, i.e., environmental literacy. A wilderness purism scale, a spatial scale, and wilderness management scale measured how wilderness education affects recreationists' limits of unacceptability in wilderness conditions. The ability of pyridoxal 5$\sp\prime$-phosphate (PLP)-dependent 2,2-dialkylglycine decarboxylase (DGD) to catalyze decarboxylation and transamination of amino acids at a single active site depends on the subsite within the active site that cleaves $\alpha$-H and $\alpha$-COO$\sp-$ bonds. As observed in the crystal structure, the strategic position of glutamine 52 at the active site suggests a role in enhancing decarboxylation via formation of a hydrogen bond to the substrate carboxyl group. Supporting evidence for this hypothesis is provided by studies with glutamine 52 active site mutants, computer modeling and protein sequence analyses. A process based, spatially distributed hydrologic model with the acronym MATH (Model of Arctic Thermal and Hydrologic Processes) is constructed to quantitatively simulate the energy and mass transfer processes and their interactions within arctic regions. The impetus for development of this model was the need to have spatially distributed soil moisture data for use in models of trace gas fluxes (carbon dioxide and methane) generated from the carbon-rich soils of this region. Waste from coastal, metal mining operations may be disposed of in the ocean. Studies were conducted using tailings and wastewater (effluent) from a proposed gold mine that is located near Juneau, Alaska, USA. The ability of invertebrates to colonize tailings after obliteration by submarine tailings disposal (STD) was assessed through a field experiment. Trays of tailings and reference sediment were placed on the sea floor and retrieved over a 22 month period. The taxonomic composition, abundance, and biomass of invertebrates that colonized tailings and reference sediment were similar. Therefore, recolonization of invertebrates after obliteration by STD should not be inhibited …

Continental margin sediments provide a historical record of the sources and fate of organic matter (OM) originating both from the continents and from primary productivity in the overlying water column. However, since this record can be altered by microbial decomposition within the sediment, the history cannot be interpreted without understanding how decomposition can affect OM composition. Also, the margins accumulate much of the OM buried in ocean sediments; hence, knowledge of processes influencing preservation of OM in these sediments is essential to understanding the global carbon cycle. There is a long-standing debate over the degree to which control of alcohol supply is effective or makes sense as a policy direction for prevention of alcohol and drug abuse. The arguments on both sides of the control-of-supply debate are probably familiar to most alcohol researchers. However, it may be useful to review some empirical studies relevant to prevention policy for Native American populations. This study examined the adjustment of nondisabled siblings of children with a disability. Factors such as family income and characteristics of the nondisabled child as they relate to psychological, behavioral, and academic functioning, and parents' perceptions regarding the needs of nondisabled siblings were explored. Specific attention was given to determining parents' interest in sibling support groups. Study participants consisted of 65 parents who had at least one child between the ages of 5 and 21 with a disability and at least one nondisabled child between. the ages of 5 and 18. I monitored seasonal changes in body condition and dates of immergence into and emergence from hibernation in a natural population of arctic ground squirrels (Sphermophilus parryii kennicottii) living on the North Slope of Alaska. Age and sex differences in changes of body condition and hibernation chronology are attributable to sex differences in energetic costs associated with preparation for reproduction and differences in reproductive status within males. While winters are long and environmental conditions faced by arctic ground squirrels in northern Alaska are extreme, the timing of hibernation did not differ appreciably from patterns observed in Sciurid populations living in temperate …

Annual variation in breeding populations at seabird colonies has been well documented, but there have been few long-term attempts to examine the environmental and demographic forces responsible. I studied breeding chronology and demography Black Guillemot in northern Alaska from 1975-1997 to identify the factors responsible for colony establishment and growth. The Black Guillemot is a cavity-nesting seabird whose populations are frequently limited by nest-site availability. Snowmelt in spring and snow accumulation in autumn had major effects on annual nesting initiation and success, respectively. Annual arrival at the colony and median date of egg laying was well correlated with the date …

I studied populations, distributions, and reproductive performance of red-legged and black-legged kittiwakes on St. George Island in the summers of 1993-1995, where populations of both species have experienced generally poor reproductive performance and population declines of ca. 40% over the past 20 years. In 1995, I conducted a whole-island census of kittiwakes on St. George Island and found estimated breeding populations of 193,930 red-legged kittiwakes (81% of their global population), and 62,568 black-legged kittiwakes. In addition, I analyzed census trends on 51 land-based census plots on St. George Island and found that numbers of both species have stabilized in recent …

The restoration of muskoxen (Ovibos moschatus) to regions of former range in northeastern Alaska presented an opportunity to study population dynamics, seasonal patterns, and dispersal in an expanding population of ungulates. Muskoxen were returned to the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (Arctic NWR) in 1969-70 after an absence of $>$100 years. In 1982-97, I used annual censuses, counts by sex and age, radio and satellite telemetry, and data from Landsat-TM maps to determine rates of population growth, changes in production, survival, and group size over time, seasonal habitat use, activity patterns, and dispersal of mixed-sex groups.
