Nudel, An Unusual Mosaic Protease Involved In Defining The Embryonic Dorsal-Ventral Axis Of Drosophila Melanogaster, Charles Chansik Hong

Dorsal-ventral polarity of the Drosophila embryo is determined by positional information that originates outside of the embryo. This information, which is created during oogenesis by the somatic follicle cells swrounding the oocyte, is utilized following fertilization to trigger a spatially regulated serine protease cascade in the extraembryonic perivitelline space. This protease cascade, which appears to be activated only on the presumptive ventral side of the embryo, generates the ligand for the Toll transmembrane protein that polarizes the embryo by inducing ventral development.This thesis presents evidence that nudel, a gene maternally required in somatic tissue for the formation of Toll's ligand, …

The purpose of this study was to determine if a gender inequity exists in student participation in high school jazz band.

The sample for this study consisted of students involved in the instrumental programs of high schools in South Jersey. A survey was generated by the researcher to collect data on participation. Sixty-eight surveys were mailed and forty-three were returned.

Data were converted to percentages and compared by instrument for participation in the overall program and the jazz program.

On the basis of these data there is a gender inequity in the participation of jazz band. The difference is a …

Does environment affect academic achievement? The dispute over environmental influences has been the topic of numerous debates. This study was designed to investigate the relationship between academic achievement and the following environmental factors: family structure, ethnic background, socioeconomic circumstances and family size. The 1,500 participants of this study were collected from a large, extremely diverse elementary school population. From this general population, 134 students were selected for the control group based on participation in the Basic Skills Program. This article attempts to evaluate the recent criticisms of the political structure of the Illinois Supreme Court. The author examines the electoral and legal systems that usually come into potential conflicts. The goal of the article is to illustrate some important issues in the environment free from the sensationalism of press accounts and the emotionalism of political attacks, and provoke a sensible debate among the State's bar, legislators, and public about how the perception of a "political" court impacts on Illinois' legal system.

No Longer Free To Offend: Involuntary Civil Commitment Statutes For Sexual Predators Create The Basis For A Uniform Act, Lisa A. Wilson

This comment examines the progression of involuntary civil commitment statutes for repeat sex offenders beginning in the 1930's and moving into the 1990's in terms of statutory changes and improvements. This comment also illustrates why these involuntary commitment statutes are the best solution to curb sexual predation with an eye towards the ultimate protection of the public. Finally, this comment stresses the need for a uniform act designed to incorporate those aspects of the currently existing sex predator statutes which best protect the community from repeat sex offenders.

This project is a critical examination of Richard Paul's theoretical conceptualization of critical thinking. In his relentless criticism of the didactic approach characterizing current academic instruction, Paul develops a model of critical thinking that he refers to as critical thinking in the strong sense. The model posits dialogue as the methodological strategy that helps overcome egocentric and socio-centric thinking and thereby facilitates the achievement of ethically rational development. Conventional light microscopy allows the observation of living as well as fixed cells and tissues to generate two-dimensional images. The out-of-focus information often obscures the ultrastructural details, especially in thick specimens with overlapping structures. The earliest available light microscopy visualized the objects in hydrated state in two-dimensions during their temporal development. The emergence of electron microscopy (EM) provided superb resolution of ultrastructural details, but it was applicable only for objects in the dehydrated state and thereby potentially introducing handling artifacts. Women, Sex And Dating: A Qualitative Study Of College Men's Perceptions, Rosemary E. Barke

A two-hour focus group of ten, 19, 20, and 21-year-old male college studnets who expressed an interest in dataing women was undertaken to gain a deeper understanding of men's perceptions of women, sex, and dating. Data analysis of verbatim transripts was conducted by three female qualitative researchers. Findings suggest that young men experience confusion, frustration, and lack of trust of young women, at the same time that they experience pressure to be sexually active, perceive women as potential status enhancers and objects, and fear contracting sexually transmitted diseases and impregnating young women. A. Purpose. In 1990, the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) Commission designated Fort Ord, California for closure. At that time, studies were begun by the Army to determine the conditions of the facilities and properties comprising the base. The Fort Ord Reuse Authority (FORA) was established to develop plans for the reuse of the facilities. FORA was a coalition of representatives from the local city, county, and state governments. When the base closed in 1992, FORA took the lead in developing the Fort Ord Reuse Plan (FORP).

Toxin-producing Escherichia coli expressing F18 fimbriae colonizes the small intestines of weaned pigs and causes diarrhea, edema disease, or both. The F18 family is composed of two antigenic variants, F18ab and F18ac. Because many strains do not express F18 fimbriae in vitro, identification and differentiation of these two variants are difficult. Single-strand conformational polymorphism (SSCP) analysis is a rapid method for identifying genetic mutations and polymorphisms. The F18 major fimbrial subunit genes (fedA) of 138 strains were amplified by PCR, and genetic differences were detected by SSCP analysis. The problems of lead as an environmental toxicant are well established. These problems are complicated by the need for better analytical methods to determine trace quantities of lead in various biological samples, particularly biological fluids. The most widely used method which clinical laboratories use is the Graphite Furnace Atomic Absorption Spectroscopic (GFAAS) technique. The problems of determining lead in biological fluids such as blood are due to the low melting point of lead and the large amount of biological materials such as blood cell fragments. Camaric acid (3,25-epoxy-3a-hydroxy-22�(2-methyl-2z-butenoyloxy)-12-0Ieanen-28- oic acid), camarinic acid (22�-acetoxy-3,25-epoxy-3a-hydroxy-12-ursen-12-en-28-oic acid), lantic acid (3�,25-epoxy-3a-hydroxyrus-12-en-28-oic acid), and lantanilic acid (22�­ dimethylacryloyloxy-3�,25-epoxy-3a-hydroxyolean-12-en-28-oic acid) have been isolated by guided HPLC fractionation ofdichloromathane:methanol (1: 1) extract of Lantana camara obtained from the Environmental Chemistry and Toxicology Laboratory, Texas Southern University. The structures of the various compounds were confirmed through spectral methods: UV, IR, MS and IH_NMR and by comparison of their data with the published values. The purpose of this study is to report the chemical composition and structures of the local ornamental plants (Lantana camara).

Repetitive stimulation of motor nerves causes an increase in the number of packets of transmitter ("quanta") that can be released in the ensuing period. This represents a type of conditioning, in which synaptic transmission may be enhanced by prior activity. Despite many studies of this phenomenon, there have been no investigations of the quantal mechanisms underlying these events, due to the rapid changes in transmitter output and the short time periods involved. To examine this problem, a method was developed in which estimates of the quantal release parameters could be obtained over very brief periods (3 s). Conventional microelectrode techniques …
