Relative Survival And Contribution Of Saugers Stocked In The Peoria Pool Of The Illinois River, 1990–1995, Roy C. Heidinger, Ronald C. Brooks

Publications

Numbers of sauger Stizostedion canadense declined in the Peoria Pool of the Illinois River from the 1970s to the 1990s. Stocking was evaluated as a means of supplementing natural reproduction in the pool. Marked fry were stocked in 1991–1994 (20–176/ha), and marked fingerlings were stocked in 1990–1995 (,1–20/ha). In 1990, fingerlings with a mean total length of 44 mm were stocked in June, and 92-mm fingerlings were stocked in September and October. Relative survival was 4.9:1 in favor of the 44-mm fingerlings. During 1991–1994, relative survival averaged 440:1 for stocked fingerlings (39–61 mm) versus fry. From 1990 to 1995, contribution …

The objectives of our research were to:
• evaluate a wide array of alfalfa germplasm containing varied levels of M. sativa ssp. falcata for traits related to suitability for stockpiling and nesting cover for game birds,
•compare yellow-flowered cultivars and germplasms to conventional hay- and pasture-type cultivars for forage yield and quality in a delayed single-harvest / production system, and
• develop, by phenotypic selection, one or more synthetic cultivars of yellow-flowered alfalfa that would have high forage yield, tolerance to potato leafhopper yellowing, prolonged flowering, and good leaf retention under a stockpiling management system until mid-July.

Waterfowl And Habitat Changes After 40 Years On The Waubay Study Area, S. J. Mcleod, K. F. Higgins

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

We collected data on upland and aquatic habitats, waterfowl populations, and landowner demographics in the Waubay study area to document habitat, land use, demographic, and ownership changes and to determine temporal and spatial changes in the physical and vegetative characteristics of wetlands since 1950-53. We also compared current waterfowl abundances and reproductive indices with those of the earlier study.
Results from our study will provide waterfowl managers in the prairie pothole region a comprehensive evaluation of landscape changes and their relationships to waterfowl abundances over a 40- year time period.

Heterologous Complementation Reveals That Mutant Alleles Of Qsr1 Render 60s Ribosomal Subunits Unstable And Translationally Inactive, Frederick A. Dick, Bernard L. Trumpower

QSR1 is a highly conserved gene which encodes a 60S ribosomal subunit protein that is required for joining of large and small ribosomal subunits. In this report we demonstrate heterologous complementation of a yeast QSR1 deletion strain with both the human and corn homologs and show that the human and corn proteins are assembled into hybrid yeast/human and yeast/corn ribosomes. While the homologous genes complement lethality of the QSR1 deletion, they also result in a diminished growth rate. Analyses of the translation rates of ribosomes containing the human and corn proteins reveal a partial loss of function. Velocity gradient analyses …

The purpose of this study was to examine the role that John H. Shary had on the economic development of Hidalgo County, Texas. It discusses the promotion of the Rio Grande Valley, and details Shary's life and development business.

Shary visited the Valley in 1912 and saw the potential for large-scale citrus production. After buying land in the Mission area, he launched the commercial citrus industry. Under his leadership, Mission became the leading citrus producing city in Texas. However, before his citrus business flourished, Shary developed and sold land in Hidalgo County. He actively promoted the area and sponsored train …

Indans and tetralins are considered biological markers (biomarkers). These C9-C11 hydrocarbons are present in small amounts in organic geological samples. Methyl substituted indans or tetralins may possess a stereogenic center (carbon). Thus they can exist as enantiomers and, in the case of disubstituted enties, also as diastereoisomers. The concentrations of 1-methylindan, 1,3-dimethylindan, 1-methyltetralin, and 2-methyltetralin were determined in 16 crude oil samples of different sources and in 14 coal samples of different sources and ranks. Deuterated homologues were synthesized as standards to spike the samples and to assure accurate quantitative analysis. A procedure using HPLC fractionation followed by GC/MS analysis …

Despite the gains in disaster research on families, there is little research on the impact of disasters on marital relationships. This study addresses this under- researched area through the examination of the effects of the 1997 Red River Valley Flood on marital relationships.

Data was collected through in-depth interviews with ten heterosexual married couples. The results indicate that the 1997 Red River Valley Flood did have an impact on marital relationships. However, the impact of the flood appeared to be mediated by the state of the couples' relationships prior to the flood. Couples who reported strong relationships prior to the …

The Houston Ship Channel (HSC) is a narrow tidal channel about 50 miles long, 400 feet wide, and 40 feet deep. The Houston Ship Channel extends 51 miles from its juncture with the city channel at Bolivar Roads at the entrance to Galveston Bay and terminates at the turning basin in the City of Houston, lower 26 miles of the H.S.C. traverse the bay and the upper 25 miles reverence section follows the San Jacinto River and Buffalo Bayou, two tributaries to the bay.
