This Remediation Action Plan (RAP) presents the methods and results of feasibility testing, the screening and selection of remedial options, preliminary conceptual design, methods, permitting requirements, recommendations and cleanup goals for on- and off-site remediation of petroleum hydrocarbon impacted soil and groundwater at an undisclosed site in Laughlin, Nevada. This site is an active convenience store and former retail fueling station. Plans are being made for the demolition of the fueling station and construction of a Factory Outlet Mall on the former refueling station site and surrounding properties to the south, west, and northwest. Diagnosis of yellow vine disease (YVD) in cucurbits, an important disease in the south-central United States, relies on external symptom appearance, phloem discoloration, and the presence of bacterium-like organisms (BLOs) in phloem. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification of BLO nucleotide sequences was explored as a means to improve diagnostic techniques. PCR, using a primer pair based on sequences of the citrus-greening BLO, amplified a 0.15-kilobase (kb) fragment from the DNA of symptomatic plants, but not from that of asymptomatic plants. Its nucleotide sequence suggested that the DNA amplified was of prokaryotic origin. A primer pair, designed to amplify nonspecific prokaryotic …

This essay addresses the claim of the crucified people of El Salvador on theology and ethics, as they are done in the United States. Part I discusses the idea of the "crucified people," grounding the concept in the historical reality of the crucified people of El Mozote, El Salvador, and interpreting its meaning with reference to the overarching theological notion of the reign of God, presented in soteriological perspective. African Americans' knowledge about primary preventive health and their attitudes toward primary preventive health influence their health behavior. Primary preventive health behavior is also affected by the individuals' definition of health and the significance they ascribe to their health status. Attitudes toward primary preventive health determine whether health assessment is important in preventing disease. African Americans have a myriad of views about health and general well being. The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between primary preventive health knowledge, primary preventive health attitudes and primary preventive health behavior in African American undergraduate students. Invasion Genetics Of The Mediterranean Fruit Fly: Variation In Multiple Nuclear Introns, F. X. Villablanca, G. K. Roderick, S. R. Palumbi

Biological Sciences

Biological invasions generally start from low initial population sizes, leading to reduced genetic variation in nuclear and especially mitochondrial DNA. Consequently, genetic approaches for the study of invasion history and population structure are difficult. An extreme example is the Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata (Medfly), for which successive invasions during this century have resulted in a loss of 60% of ancestral genetic variation in isozymes and 75% of variation in mitochondrial DNA. Using Medflies as an example, we present a new approach to invasion genetics that measures DNA sequence variation within introns from multiple nuclear loci. These loci are so …

Opportunities For Growing Short-Rotation Woody Crops In Agroforestry Practices, Gary A. Kuhn, W. J. Rietveld

Agroforestry Notes (USDA-NAC)

Technologies are readily available for growing hybrid poplars and willows in block plantings as short-rotation woody crops (SRWC) for fuel and fiber. SRWC species and technologies can also be incorporated into agricultural systems as agroforestry practices. Examples are windbreaks, living snowfences, “timberbelts”, riparian buffer strips, and wastewater treatment plantings. Fast growth, convenient propagation (see AF Note - 11), and compatibility with conventional farming methods make SRWC suitable for use in agroforestry practices to provide multiple benefits such as solid wood and wood fiber products, water quality improvement, crop and soil protection, wildlife habitat, and buffers for agricultural/community interfaces.

Agroforestry Notes (USDA-NAC)

Hybrid poplars (and willows) are well-suited for agroforestry applications in many parts of the United States (See AFN-10). Their convenient propagation and fast growth allow them to establish and provide conservation benefits more quickly. This note provides general establishment and cultural guidelines to consider when using hybrid poplar cuttings for agroforestry plantings.

Expression, Purification, And Characterization Of Nonstructural Protein 2 (Ns2) Of Bluetongue Virus Serotype 17, Hai Lin

Biology

The NS2 protein of bluetongue virus (BTV) serotype 17 (B17) was expressed in large scale as a Glutathione-S-Transferase (GST) fusion protein in E. coli cells. The size of the expressed NS2/GST fusion protein was about 68 kilodaltons (kDa) when analyzed by sodium dodecylsulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). This is equal to the sum of the predicted size from the deduced amino acid sequence of the NS2 protein (41 kDa) and the known mass of the GST protein (27 kDa). The NS2/GST fusion protein was purified by absorption to glutathione-conjugated agarose beads (G-beads), and then analyzed on western blots by two …
