The expression of Pap pili that facilitate the attach- ment of Escherichia coli to uroepithelial cells is shut off outside the host at temperatures below 268C. Ribo- nuclease protection analysis showed that this thermo- regulatory response was rapid as evidenced by the absence of papBA transcripts, coding for Pap pilin, after only one generation of growth at 238C. The his- tone-like nucleoid structuring protein H-NS and DNA sequences within papB were required for thermoregu- lation, but the PapB and PapI regulatory proteins were not. Optically active nornicotine compounds as a treatment for dopamine-related conditions and disease states. Such disease states include the treatment of myasthenia gravis, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, schizophrenia, eating disorders, ulcers, drug addiction and as a substitute for psycho-stimulant self-administration.

Phylogenetic Relationships Within The Family Potyviridae: Wheat Streak Mosaic Virus And Brome Streak Mosaic Virus Are Not Members Of The Genus Rymovirus, Drake C. Stenger, Jeffrey S. Hall, Il-Ryong Choi, Roy C. French

The complete nucleotide sequence of wheat streak mosaic virus (WSMV) has been determined based on complementary DNA clones derived from the 9,384-nucleotide (nt) RNA of the virus. The genome of WSMV has a 130-nt 5&#;&#;leader and 149-nt 3&#;-untranslated region and is polyadenylated at the 3&#;&#;end. WSMV RNA encodes a single polyprotein of 3,035 amino acid residues and has a deduced genome organization typical for a member of the family Potyviridae (5&#;-P1/HC-Pro/P3/6K1/CI/6K2/VPg-NIa/NIb/CP-3&#;). Because WSMV shares with ryegrass mosaic virus (RGMV) the biological property of transmission by eriophyid mites, WSMV has been assigned to the genus Rymovirus, of which RGMV is …

Carbon nanotubes combine a range of properties that make them well suited for use as probe tips in applications such as atomic force microscopy (AFM)^{1, 2, 3}. Their high aspect ratio, for example, opens up the possibility of probing the deep crevices⁴ that occur in microelectronic circuits, and the small effective radius of nanotube tips significantly improves the lateral resolution beyond what can be achieved using commercial silicon tips⁵. Another characteristic feature of nanotubes is their ability to buckle elastically^{4, 6}, which makes them very robust while limiting the maximum force that is …

Reproductive Success Of Ospreys At Two Sites In Connecticut, Donna Christine O'Neill, Robert A. Askins

Nest success rates and rates of fish delivery to nests were determined for two large Osprey populations in COlmecticut, one at Groton Reservoir, Groton, and one at Great Island, Old Lyme, during 1996 and 1997. Between 1993 and 1996 these Osprey populations had substantially different rates of nest success. Great Island Ospreys fledged few young while Groton Reservoir Ospreys had good nest success. During 1997, however, fledging rates were similar at the two sites. In 1996, low nest success at Great Island 'resuited from high predation rates, probably due to raccoons. Random deposition represents the simplest growth model. From a randomly chosen site over the surface, a particle falls vertically until it reaches the top of the interface, whereupon it sticks irreversibly. To include surface relaxation, we allow the deposited particle to diffuse along the surface up to a finite distance, stopping when it finds the position with the lowest height. As a result of the relaxation process, the final interface will be smooth, compared to the model without relaxation.
