Range Of The Brown-Headed Cowbird In Colorado: Past And Present, Jameson F. Chace, Alexander Cruz

The historic range of the bison (Bison bison) on the Great Plains has been well documented. In Colorado the range of bison included both the eastern grasslands and higher-elevation ridges and mountain parks, up to an elevation of 3900 m. Based on the commensal relationship of the brood-parasitic Brown-headed Cowbird (Molothrus ater) with the bison, we suggest that the cowbird had a larger historical elevational range in Colorado than previously known and consequently has had a long-term host-parasite relationship with high-elevation breeding songbirds.

Comparison Of The Epiproct Structure Of Two Closely Related Species, Sweltsa Fidelis (Banks) And S. Revelstoka (Jewett) (Plecoptera: Chloroperlidae), Jennifer K. Delk, Mary Jane Kilgore, Bill P. Stark

The male epiprocts of 2 closely related western Nearctic species, Sweltsa fidelis (Banks) and S. revelstoka (Jewett), were examined using SEM. The males of these 2 species have been historically distinguished by epiproct measurements. The ratio of the length from the base to greatest width versus total epiproct length ranges from 0.49 µm to 0.67 µm (x̄ = 0.56) in S. fidelis and 0.55 µm to 0.69 µm (x̄ = 0.60) in S. revelstoka. Similarities in measurement suggest that the location of the greatest epiproct width is not a reliable and consistent character for distinguishing males of …

Both p53 and ceramide have been implicated in the regulation of growth suppression. p53 has been proposed as the “guardian of the genome” and ceramide has been suggested as a “tumor suppressor lipid.” Both molecules appear to regulate cell cycle arrest, senescence, and apoptosis. In this study, we investigated the relationship between p53 and ceramide. We found that treatment of Molt-4 cells with low concentrations of actinomycin D or γ-irradiation, which activate p53-dependent apoptosis, induces apoptosis only in cells expressing normal levels of p53. In these cells, p53 activation was followed by a dose- and time-dependent increase in endogenous ceramide …

Information Storage Capacity Of Incompletely Connected Associative Memories, Holger Bosch, Franz J. Kurfess

Computer Science and Software Engineering

In this paper, the memory capacity of incompletely connected associative memories is investigated. First, the capacity is derived for memories with fixed parameters. Optimization of the parameters yields a maximum capacity between 0.53 and 0.69 for hetero-association and half of it for auto-association improving previously reported results. The maximum capacity grows with increasing connectivity of the memory and requires sparse input and output patterns. Further, parameters can be chosen in such a way that the information content per pattern asymptotically approaches 1 with growing size of the memory.

Each ribosome in E. coli is composed of two associated subunits, the 30s small subunit and the 50S large subunit, forming the translationally competent 70S ribosome. Ribosomal subunit association is a critical feature of all stages of translation. One proposal for subunit association involves rRNA-rRNA interactions between the 790 loop in 16S rRNA and the 2750 loop in 23S rRNA. Each of these sequences are highly conserved, and more intriguingly have the potential to form Watson-Crick base-pairs with each other. Resource management technical reports

High water use vegetation systems for salinity control were trialed on a 90 ha catchment located 12 km north north-west of Darkan, Western Australia. The catchment receives about 560 mm annual rainfall and 1895 mm annual evaporation. The catchment is characterised by a number of actively expanding seeps which are developing under the strong geological control of quartz and dolerite dykes. Development of salinity is also influenced by high recharge rates in the free draining gravel soils of the upper slope.

Bacterial community structure and the predominant nitrifying activities and populations in each compartment of a three-compartment activated sludge system were determined, Each compartment was originally inoculated with the same activated sludge community entrapped in polyethylene glycol gel granules, and ammonium nitrogen was supplied to the system in an inorganic salts solution at a rate of 5.0 g of N liter of granular activated sludge(-1) day(-1). After 150 days of operation, the system was found to comprise a series of sequential nitrifying reactions (K, Note, T. Ogasawara, Y, Suwa, and T.
