Enantiomeric Separation Of Unusual Secondary Aromatic Amino Acids, A. Péter, G. Török, G. Tóth, W. Van Den Nest, G. Laus, D. Tourwé, Daniel W. Armstrong
Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
High-performance liquid chromatographic and gas chromatographic methods were developed for the separation of unusual secondary aromatic amino acids. Amino acids containing 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline, 1,2,3,4-tetrahydronorharmane-1-carboxylic acid and 1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-3-carboxy-2-carboline moieties were synthetized in racemic or chiral forms. The high-performance liquid chromatography was carried out either on a teicoplanin-containing chiral stationary phase or on an achiral C18 column. In the latter case the diastereomers of the amino acids formed by precolumn derivatization with the chiral reagents 2,3,3,6-tetra-O-acetyl-β-D-glucopyranosyl isothiocyanate or 1-fluoro-2,4-dinitrophenyl-5-L-alanine amide were separated. The gas chromatographic analyses were based on separation on a Chirasil-L-Val column.

Flight Of The Vampire: Ontogenetic Gait-Transition In Vampyroteuthis Infernalis (Cephalopoda: Vampyromorpha), Brad A. Seibel, Erik V. Thuesen, James J. Childress

Vampyroteuthis infernalis is a cosmopolitan cephalopod that lives in the oxygen minimum layer between 600 and 800 m depth. Morphometric and physiological studies have indicated that V. infernalis has little capacity for jet propulsion and has the lowest metabolic rate ever measured for a cephalopod. Because fin swimming is inherently more efficient than jet propulsion, some of the reduction in energy usage relative to other cephalopods may result from the use of fins as the primary means of propulsion. V. infernalis undergoes a rapid metamorphosis which consists of changes in the position, size and shape of the fins. This …

Dicarbonyl compounds such as glyoxal and methylglyoxal are reactive dicarbonyl intermediates in the nonenzymatic browning and cross-linking of proteins during the Maillard reaction. We describe here the quantification of glyoxal and methylglyoxal-derived imidazolium cross-links in tissue proteins. The imidazolium salt cross-links, glyoxal-lysine dimer (GOLD) and methylglyoxal-lysine dimer (MOLD), were measured by liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry and were present in lens protein at concentrations of 0. 02-0.2 and 0.1-0.8 mmol/mol of lysine, respectively. The lens concentrations of GOLD and MOLD correlated significantly with one another and also increased with lens age. GOLD and MOLD were present at significantly higher concentrations than the …

Ruth Rowe was born in Waterville, Maine on June 6, 1914. Her parents were Hope [Chandler] and Harry Rowe. Hope was a housewife and Harry was the dean of Bates College. The family moved to Lewiston when Ruth was very young. She attended Lewiston public schools, graduating from Lewiston High School in 1932. She then went to Bates College, where she was active in the YWCA, debating, and student government. She majored in sociology and economics, and took several biology classes. She graduated from Bates in 1936, the same year as Edmund Muskie. She married Val Wilson, a Bates graduate, …

Concerted Formation Of Macromolecular Suppressor-Mutator Transposition Complexes, Ramesh Raina, Michael Schläppi, Balasulojini Karunanandaa, Adam Elhofy, Nina V. Fedoroff

Transposition of the maize Suppressor-mutator (Spm) transposon requires two element-encoded proteins, TnpA and TnpD. Although there are multiple TnpA binding sites near each element end, binding of TnpA to DNA is not cooperative, and the binding affinity is not markedly affected by the number of binding sites per DNA fragment. However, intermolecular complexes form cooperatively between DNA fragments with three or more TnpA binding sites. TnpD, itself not a sequence-specific DNA-binding protein, binds to TnpA and stabilizes the TnpA-DNA complex.
